Do dogs care about the music? If yes, do they have preferences in terms of genre? Can music therapy help dogs deal with stress and anxiety? Or can it be a tool for auditory enrichment?

Studies in this area are still evolving and for now it is rather a debatable topic, even though it seems that classical music (and reggae according to some studies) has calming effect on dogs (reduced heartbeat, slower breathing) making them sleep more and stand or bark less.

While there is not enough scientific empirical data collected with this regard, music is however applied more and more often to:

🎵 desensitize dog to potentially scary noises (fireworks, thunder, etc.)
🎵 reduce separation anxiety or distress
🎵 provide calming atmosphere in vet clinics or dog shelters
🎵 get accustomed to a new home.

Even though appealing due to its simplicity in implementation and low cost, canine music therapy shall be taken with a grain of salt: the efficiency would largely depend on the extent of your fluff’s issues, breed, individual learning history of the dog and music itself (volume, tempo, instruments used, playlist size and sequence). But let’s face it: it’s a tiny effort which may help your fluff get through the home alone time.

So why not give it a try and observe if there is any change in the behavior? ;)

🦮 Dealing with dog anxiety, reactivity, and fearful aggression can be challenging for guardians. It’s common in rescue dogs but not exclusive to them. Often, we might wonder: “What’s wrong with that dog?” when they react to seemingly harmless things like a plastic bag. Even small dog’s “cute” barking can be signs of deeper issues. It doesn’t matter whether the danger is real or perceived - the hormonal, physical, and emotional responses are exactly the same.

🔍 It’s crucial to understand if a dog’s reaction is a direct response to a trigger or linked to past trauma. For example, a dog previously hit by a man may now fear all men. The dog’s own perception of danger or safety defines the reaction.

📚 Sometimes, guardians lack info about a dog’s history, or they might not realize how certain past events could be traumatizing. This is where Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) helps. Originally used in human psychology, TIC’s 4 R’s approach can be applied to dogs too:

🐾 Realize the impact of trauma
🐾 Recognize signs of trauma
🐾 Respond appropriately
🐾 Resist re-traumatization.

💡 By focusing on these principles, we can support our dogs with empathy, understand their reactions, and find practical solutions to help them build resilience and confidence.

How it all started…

I’ve always loved dogs, and from a fairly early age, I started learning about canine behavior, caring for the puppies of our Rottweiler, and regularly attending dog shows with my parents. This passion for dogs has followed me to this day, but it was probably only when I met Tom that I gained the insight to turn my passion into a profession.

Tom, a Chihuahua jokingly described by his family as an antisocial devil, was in fact just a terrified little fella. He quickly became my friend, and in just an hour or two, I earned enough trust that he allowed me to lift him up much to his guardians’ surprise🤩 This was the moment I decided to enhance my applied experience and intuitive understanding of dogs with a scientific foundation. I enrolled in the British College of Canine Studies to learn more about canine behavior.

During this year of studying, I also registered as a volunteer at a dog shelter to gain practical experience with various breeds, different backgrounds, and potential behavioral issues.

Learning never stops, and I continue attending dog behavior conferences, seminars, and dedicated courses to bring science into action. I believe in teaching you how to speak the language of dogs, enabling you to better understand canine behavior.

I do not use pain, intimidation, or fear, and I utilize force-free methods to strengthen the bond between dogs and their guardians.

Did you know that dogs have more than 100 million receptors in their noses (depending on the breed, the estimate ranges between 100 and 300 million!) compared to our 5-6 million receptors? This superpower allows them to catch even the tiniest molecules of a smell and, as miraculous as it sounds, even diagnose cancer, diabetes, or other diseases at an early stage! They actually use more than one organ to capture smells (surprise, surprise!) and prefer one nostril over the other (also known as right nostril bias). Did you also know that SMELLING and SNIFFING are two very different processes? While smelling happens naturally and unconsciously, sniffing is an intentional cognitive activity! Through sniffing, your fluff can read the daily news, see the future, and embrace the moment. Here are just a few things sniffing gives your dog: • A polite way to greet another dog (sniffing butts is a canine equivalent to a handshake); • Find out who passed by earlier in the day, what their mood was, and what they ate for breakfast (it’s their Insta feed, if you will); • Anticipate upcoming danger (keeping their nose in the wind 😉); • Solve mysteries and play detective by tracking the path of a mouse through the fields. It is a powerful mental enrichment tool and in itself is more rewarding and enjoyable to a dog than a simple movement from point A to point B on the walk. So next time your furry friend spends 5 minutes seemingly not moving and sniffing that same spot under the bushes over and over again, perhaps give them that opportunity, and you will see a grateful, happy, and more confident pup!
