The Russian word "ovcharka" means "shepherd's dog" and denotes a wide group of livestock herding and guarding breeds utilised throughout the territory of what was once the mighty USSR. For many people, the word "ovcharka" became synonymous with the East European Shepherd Dog - the most popular and well-known working breed in the former Soviet Union.

General information

Origin: The breed was developed in the 1930s on the basis of imported German Shepherd Dogs, as a working dog adapted for service in the Army and for agriculture needs in various climatic conditions. The first standard which formed the breed type was approved in 1964 by the Cynologic Council of the Ministry of Agriculture of the USSR. At the present moment some steps are being taken towards recognition of the breed by FCI. In many European countries the East-European Shepherd breed takes part in FCI exhibitions in group «0».
