Formica cinerea ants have been in diapause all summer. Now there is plenty of brood and fresh eggs in their nest. However, I plan to put them into hibernation soon so that their natural biorhythm is not disturbed.

I knew you could find termites in southern European countries. But I didn't expect to find them, especially in November. It was an unexpected and wonderful moment. 🥰🥰🥰

Camponotus herculeanus ants continue to please me with their development. The queen managed to raise 3 workers of the first generation. Unfortunately, one of the workers died recently, for no apparent reason. Nevertheless this family has brood and continues to develop. Soon a long hibernation is planned, which is necessary for further successful development of the ant family. 😍

I tried for a very long time to catch the queen Camponotus herculeanus during the nuptial flight. But every time I had no luck. And now after 3 years I finally caught the queen of these ants. 🙂 I guess you could say it's been a dream of mine all this time. Now I can watch this queen creating her family. It is really a beautiful ant! 😍

Queens of Formica polyctena often return to their own nest after nuptial flight in order to remain there. This is explained by the fact that Formica polyctena, like many of the genus Formica, has developed social parasitism. Queens cannot establish a new family on their own, without the help of worker ants. Sometimes these queens try to enter the nests of ants of related species. However, even returning to their own nest does not always guarantee a warm welcome. And sometimes it ends in the death of the queen.

Even though the temperature was only +7 degrees at the time this video was taken, Formica polyctena ants defend their foraging area from ants from another family. Even the low temperature does not affect their behavior and aggression. 🙂
