“While working on this project with the .anou I also had the opportunity to visit their groundbreaking sustainability initiative, . On a mission to reimagine Moroccan wool as a source of prosperity for the communities of the Atlas Mountains, The Atlas Wool Supply Co is putting the finishing touches on a revolutionary solar power mill that will soon be spinning Africa’s first carbon-negative yarns.” — on her recent photo collection.

Over the past several weeks, Cooperative Imelghaus & (members of the .anou community), and have been testing our growing range of fully biodegradable hand soaps, shower gels, and laundry detergents.

Today, we are incredibly excited to announce that these cooperatives and the school are our first official distributors of our soap and detergent product range!

These distributors will play a key role in the movement to shift Ait Bouguemez and beyond towards using biodegradable soaps, helping to protect our fragile water tables and preserve our land. By doing so, we can continue creating the finest wool and yarns in the kingdom.

“This wool mill is the future.  It uses the wool which in past years local shepherds would throw away after sheep-shearing. It uses the sun which beats down on the Moroccan mountain valley of Ait Bougemez, for free solar power. It’s fertilising dry soil by composting tens of thousands kilograms of waste apples from the valley’s fertile orchards. It’s also growing its own herbs - lavender and rosemary - for biodegradeable soap production. I’ve just washed up the dishes with soap made today. All this is all new, all experimental.” — on her reflections of the mill after camping on site for the past several days with her husband .lister Check their lastest post to read their full reflections about the mill and follow them along for their rest of their journey throughout Morocco.

Safe travels over the pass and beyond Philippa & Richard!

Yesterday, the women of the Imelghaus Cooperative completed one of the first trial rugs made entirely from yarn spun at our mill. Unlike most Moroccan rugs on the market, this rug required no washes or chemical stripping agents. In fact, the yarn was spun using processing oils derived from crops grown on the AWSco farm—oils that regenerate the land rather than deplete it. Learn more about this rug in our latest pinned story.

While we’re still in the early stages of research and development, our yarn supply is limited and currently available only through select Anou cooperatives and partners. If you’re interested in creating your next rug through Anou with our sustainable yarns, reach out to .anou, and they’ll guide you through the next steps..

NEW from the Atlas Wool Supply Co Lab: Introducing our proprietary, non-toxic anti-moth spray, scientifically proven to prevent moth infestations in wool rugs and other woolens for up to 6 months.
***
Why switch? Many anti-moth sprays on the market are not only harmful to you but especially toxic to your pets.
***
Our Commitment: Like all our products, our anti-moth spray is manufactured on-site using ingredients grown on our farm.
***
Protection: All yarns produced by us come pre-treated with our anti-moth solution, available in lavender and cedar scents. You can also purchase your own bottle at our yarn store in the .anou HQ in Fes, or from participating artisan distributors within the Anou community.
***
Pro Tip: If you’re buying a rug from Morocco, ask if it’s treated with our non-toxic spray.

Our apple compost pile has grown to 3000kg in size and is cooking at a toasty 109f/43c. When fully composted, our apple pile will avoid an estimated 2034kg in carbon emissions. That’s the equivalent of driving an average gas car 5202 miles / 8371 km.

After building our own solar farm that now enables us to run our mill 100% off the sun and batteries, we are moving to to leverage our expertise to accelerate Ait Bouguemez’s transition to a carbon-free future. With the help of and , we installed our first solar pump inverter prototype at to provide the school with much-needed water. Head over to our latest pinned stories to learn more. More to come as our tests progress.

We’re excited to introduce the softest rug made in Morocco, woven by Touda, Khadija and other members of Cooperative Timit in Ait Bouguemez made exclusively with yarn produced at our mill. The white wool is from our very own Tamzrit plateau, and the black wool is from our friends and neighbors in the Ait Bouli Valley.
***
Unlike standard processes used to soften Moroccan rugs, we use no chemicals (such as bleach or sulfur-based compounds that harm the environment and bioaccumulate) and zero washes—saving 1000+ liters of water typically used for an 8x10’ rug. Thanks to our proprietary yarn development, powered by solar energy and biodegradable detergents, we’re making rug wash finishing a relic of the past.
***
This rug is our first prototype and is headed to Australia via our partners at .anou. Even with exciting results thus far, our journey to create the best quality yarns that regenerate our land is just beginning. Want to help further this research along and commission your own sustainable rug? Reach out our partners .anou and they will connect you with select cooperatives participating in our research and development.

On the Tamzrit plateau where our mill was built, local lore believes that the presence of crows is an omen for good rains in the following season. Six months beyond meaningful rain, we believe it is no coincidence that the Amazigh symbol for protection is inspired by the shape of crow beaks.

We’ve carved these symbols into the walls of the mill both as a means to shield us from the worst of a warming climate and as a constant reminder of our responsibility that every step from sheep to yarn is an opportunity to protect and lead our region in the face of the changes that are to come.

In the mountains behind the mill at Tizi N Tighrist sit Bronze Age rock carvings from 3000 BC. While their origin and meaning remain mostly speculative, many symbols appear to depict solar or lunar calendars. True today as it was then, the power of the sun dictates our fate.

We believe that our mill, fully powered by our solar farm, is a critical asset in combating the escalating impacts of climate change in the region. It was only natural, then, to incorporate the imagery from these carvings into the design of the machinery we depend on to advance our work. With immense challenges on the horizon, we’ll need all the inspiration we can gather.

Warp yarn trials continue with our friends at and .anou . The top fringe threads are our dense, single-ply warp, and the remaining are our medium 2-ply warp. Our focus is to learn how each yarn, with its twist and ply, impacts both the aesthetics and overall feel of a rug. Soon, artisans across Morocco will be able to expand their creative expression through the warps they choose for their next project.

As this year’s sheep shearing season draws to a close, we are expanding our network of shepherds in Morocco’s Siroua region. Our goal is to extend our reach to every major sheep area in Morocco, creating a diverse range of Moroccan wool yarns and integrating our environmental initiatives to restore and protect all grazing areas for Moroccan sheep.
