Somewhere in the stands there watching Mongolia set the Guiness World Record for the largest horse race ever -4249 horses and jockeys from around the whole country! - was ME!!

Super exciting to watch and especially thrilling as I had been lucky enough the day previous to be part of the largest horse parade in history…something like 11,640 horses on parade if I recall correctly.

Only in Mongolia. 2013 or 14 it was if I recall correctly.

The crowning event of the Ice Festival is a spectacular exhibition of local shamanic customs, ceremony and traditions.

While it was a bit frosty waiting for the sun to go down so it could start, it was really evocative of the ancient ways and times and something eerily cool about imagining this same kind of ceremony taking place all the way back to the early days and at gatherings of the clans high in the mountain tops or under a blazing blanket of crystalline stars say our on the plains.

More photos and videos coming soon but we’re up early this morning to head to the Reindeer Festival and visit the wild winter beauty of the east Taiga in winter which takes us far from the world of the internet…. So updates will have to wait.

Hope to share this magic with you all in person one of these years.

So here’s a moment… Our Senior Guide, Sumbee, watching a local Naadam on Blue Wolf, a horse bought on the Blue Wolf Totem Expedition last year by an Expeditionist - later sold at auction to the fabulous Betsy Cooksey (who also rode the 3649 km Blue Wolf Totem Expedition )then gifted him to another young Expeditionist with the proviso that he stay with us and be used to help Veloo Foundation with their summer camp programme for disadvantaged youth-something we are very proud to be a part of! He is riding in the 10th Anniversary Gobi Gallop ’Mongolian Comfort Saddle’ which was sold at auction after this years’s Gobi Gallop to…. Gobi Galloper, BetsyCooksey (again!!) who in turn gifted it to our Head Guide , Baagii. Such generosity and kindness really is moving …and doesn’t that saddle look wonderful on Blue!? This set up is being used by Baagii’s son Zulaa who is the head guide for our signature Naadam trek this year and we met Sumbee at the Naadam as he had a horse in this race …but not one to ride 🙂 so he borrowed Zulaa’s horse to watch the start of the 28 km race.
