Founded in 1868, the Malta Polo Club is known to be the oldest polo club in the Northern Hemisphere, and the second oldest club in the world after the Calcutta Polo Club of India. Polo was first introduced in Malta through the efforts of British Army officers stationed on the island, and the club quickly became a social and sporting hub. 🏇

From its early days at Marsa to today's modern-day field, Malta Polo Club has hosted countless memorable matches and memories. Here's to many more years of polo, sportsmanship, and a growing community 🥂

A significant event took place in 1968 when King Charles III visited Malta and participated in a polo match to commemorate the centenary of the Malta Polo Club. Still a young prince at the time, he played alongside notable local players such as Sam Borg, Anthony Cassar, and Salvu Darmanin, a celebrated player holding the national record for the highest goal handicap. 🏆 The matches were held at the Marsa arena, with horses provided by the Darmanin stables.

A year later, King Charles III returned to Malta with then-Princess Anne for the Keyes’ Challenge Cup, where he played for the President's Team. The prince's involvement in these events highlighted the historical significance of the Malta Polo Club and its ties to British royalty 👑✨

Changing polo ponies after each chukka ensures their safety and well-being 🏇 Each polo match requires bursts of speed and agility, which can be quite tiring for the horses after long periods of time. By rotating ponies, we prevent fatigue and reduce the risk of injury, keeping our beautiful horses healthy and at their best ❤️

Royalty and polo have a long history at the Malta Polo Club. 🏇👑

The late Queen Elizabeth II first visited Marsa in 1954 to watch Prince Philip play for the Royal Navy. They returned in 2005, where Prince Philip reminisced with then-club president Anthony Farrugia. Their final visit was in 2015, a testament to Prince Philip's enduring passion for polo, which he often played while stationed in Malta during the 1950s.

We express our sincere gratitude to MOOD for their exceptional marketing ideas and meticulous planning throughout all the season. Their team demonstrates outstanding efficiency, working quickly and effectively to fulfill all requirements.

Team Alliance managed to win the Cawnpore Cup after a close polo match which saw them triumph over V***e Cliquot 9-6.

In what turned out to be the largest event ever, with 3,000 people flocking to Marsa, the winning team saw Greg Gera and Matthew Borg both scoring three goals each and Martin Arrigo scoring two.

Meanwhile, the Novice Cup was also played last weekend, with Team Finestrall winning against Schweppes in a similarly close match that ended 5.5 - 4.

Last weekend’s round of matches - which was made possible and as big as it was thanks to people like EquestriMalta chairman John Huber and CEO Max Zammit - saw Francis Zammit Dimech present the trophies as Acting President.

Beyond the accolades, the EquestriMalta Cawnpore Cup also saw funds being donated to the Community Chest Fund.

“We couldn’t make the Cawnpore Cup 2024 happen without our amazing sponsors,” the Malta Polo Club said, also thanking Equidrome manager Matthew Brincat.

With polo finally get its time to shine in Malta, tag someone who needs to attend the next event with you!

Playing Polo for 150 Years

The Malta Polo Club is the second oldest in the world and was founded in 1868. The world’s oldest club still in existence is the Calcutta Polo Club in India, founded only six years previously, but Malta wins the European title for age, and is even older than the famous Hurlingham Polo Association in England. Among them, the Berlin Brandenberg Polo Club, the French Aix en Provence Polo Club, Rome Polo Club and the Royal Madrid Polo Club who have all visited Maltese soil to play Polo.
