Tip #6 - December 18th:
“Beware of Toxic Christmas Plants”

🎄During the holiday season, many popular Christmas plants can be toxic to pets if ingested.
Knowing which plants to keep out of reach can prevent serious health issues for your furry friends.

Common Toxic Holiday Plants:

🌿 Poinsettia:

Mildly toxic to dogs and cats.

Causes irritation to the mouth and stomach, leading to drooling, vomiting, and diarrhea.

🌿 Mistletoe:

Can cause gastrointestinal upset, drooling, low heart rate, and breathing problems if ingested in large amounts.

🌿 Holly (Berries & Leaves):

Causes severe vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy.

The leaves are sharp and can injure the mouth and throat.

🌿 Amaryllis & Lilies:

Extremely dangerous, especially for cats, causing kidney failure or even death.

🐾 How to Protect Your Pet:

Keep Plants Out of Reach: Place plants on high shelves or use hanging decorations.

Use Pet-Safe Alternatives: Consider artificial plants or non-toxic decorations.

Watch for Symptoms: If you suspect your pet has ingested a toxic plant, contact your vet immediately.

Tip #5 - December 16th:
“Muscle Warm-Up Before a Winter Walk”

❄️ During the winter, cold temperatures can cause muscle stiffness in our pets, especially if they are senior, active, or have joint issues.
A proper muscle warm-up before walks helps stimulate circulation and prevent injuries.

🐾Why Is It Important?

Cold Temperatures: They can cause muscle stiffness and joint pain.
Injury Risk: Cold muscles are more prone to strains and sprains.

🐕How to Prepare Your Pet:

1. Pre-Walk Massage:
A gentle massage on the paws, back, and major joints stimulates circulation and warms up the muscles.
Use slow, circular motions on areas prone to tension.

2. Start with a Slow Walk:
Begin your walk with slow, controlled movements, gradually increasing the pace to ensure a full warm-up.

👉🏽Extra Tip:

If your pet has short fur or is particularly sensitive to the cold, use a coat to keep them warm and protect their muscles during the walk.

Tip #4 - December 14th:
“Year-Round Parasite Prevention”

👉🏽Many people think parasites are only a problem during warmer months, but fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, flies, and sandflies can still be active in winter, especially if the weather is mild or if pets live indoors.

Why Is It Important?

🕷Fleas and Ticks: They can survive in heated indoor environments. Once inside, they reproduce quickly.

🦟Mosquitoes and Sandflies: They can transmit serious diseases like leishmaniasis in dogs and other dangerous infections.

🪰Flies: They can cause skin irritations and infections, especially in pets with small wounds.

For Dogs and Cats:

🐈‍⬛️🐕Even Indoor Pets: Parasites can enter through open windows or cling to clothes and shoes.

👩🏻‍⚕️Regular Treatments: Consult your vet to create a continuous, personalized parasite prevention plan tailored to your pet's needs.

Extra Tip:

Keep pet beds, blankets, and rugs clean, and frequently wash anything your pet comes into contact with. Prevention is the best defense!

Tip #3 - December 12th:
“Dangerous Christmas Foods for Your Pets”

During the holiday season, festive treats are everywhere, but some traditional Christmas foods can be dangerous or toxic for our furry friends.
Here’s what to avoid:

🚫 Foods to Avoid:

🍫Chocolate: Contains theobromine, toxic to dogs and cats.
🍇Raisins and dried fruits: Can cause kidney failure in dogs.
🍗Cooked bones (chicken or turkey): They can splinter and cause serious internal injuries.
🍪Sweets and cookies: Sugar and the sweetener xylitol are highly toxic.
☕️Alcohol and coffee
🧀Fatty cheeses and sauces: Can cause digestive problems and pancreatitis.

✅ Safe Alternatives:

▪️Pet-safe treats.
▪️Fruits like apples (without seeds) or carrots for a healthy snack.

🔆Extra Tip:

Be mindful of what guests may offer your pets and keep leftovers out of reach. Prevention is always better than cure!

🎄 December 10th: Tip #2
"Protecting Senior Pets from the Cold"

❄️ As winter sets in, senior pets are especially vulnerable to low temperatures due to their reduced ability to regulate body heat and possible joint problems like arthritis.
Here are some practical tips to keep them safe and comfortable during the colder months:

🏠 Indoors:

Warm and Comfortable Bed: Make sure your pet has a soft, insulated bed away from cold floors.

Quiet Spot: Place the bed away from drafts or frequently opened doors.

Stable Temperature: Keep your home well-heated, but avoid overheating to prevent sudden temperature changes.

🚶‍♂️🐕Outdoors:

Short, Frequent Walks: Avoid long exposures to the cold, especially in rainy or snowy weather.

Coat or Blanket: For dogs with short fur or joint issues, a warm, waterproof coat can make a big difference.

🔍 Signs of Discomfort:

Watch for signs of cold, such as shivering, stiffness, sleepiness, or reluctance to go outside. These signals could mean your pet is uncomfortable in low temperatures.

🎄December 8th: Tip #1
"Be Careful with Christmas Decorations!"

December 8th is traditionally the day to set up the Christmas tree, and while you prepare to decorate your home, remember that some items can be dangerous for your pets.

🐕For dogs: Be careful with Christmas baubles. If not secured properly, they can easily be knocked over and, in some cases, ingested. Avoid fragile decorations that could break and cause harm.

🐈‍⬛️For cats: Tree wires, lights, and ornaments can be hazardous. Cats tend to chew and play with these items, so make sure they are well-protected and out of their reach.

🐇For rabbits: Electric cords can be a danger, so protect them with safe coverings or place the tree in an area where the rabbit cannot access the cords.

🐾Extra tip: Choose soft and safe decorations to prevent injury to your pets, and if possible, use stickers or decorative supports instead of hanging ornaments that might easily be knocked down.
