Meet Jun’ichi and Asami, our palmetto Cornsnakes (P.guttatus).

Young palmettos are pink in appearance with faint spots of color as can be seen in our beautiful pair. As they age, they become more white and their color freckles intensify in coloration. This trait is incomplete dominant, meaning that cornsnakes with Het Palmetto trait will appear a bit different to normal corns, generally looking similar to hypo morph cornsnakes.

Whether it’s a chameleon blending into its environment, a snake’s incredible ability to move without limbs or a turtle’s intriguing anatomy, reptiles are truly remarkable. Learning about them and caring for these amazing creatures brings me closer to understanding the natural world.

Who’s on my property?!

Stubby is a 3-legged rescue bearded dragon that has been with us since we adopted him as a juvenile.

Bearded dragons are resilient lizards that can adapt well to living with three legs due to various compensatory behaviors and physical adaptations.

They often adjust their posture and gait to redistribute their weight more evenly, using their tail and remaining limbs to stabilize themselves. They may also rely more on climbing and perching rather than running or jumping.

We can further help by providing lower basking spots, ramps and platforms that are easier to climb, as well as ensuring that food and water are easily accessible without the need for extensive movement. Hides are also of increased importance as due to their vulnerability, they stress more easily and so feel more secure with hides.

Akari, one of our redfoot tortoises, enjoying some fresh pineapple 🍍 This tropical species has very different requirements to most of the other species commonly kept in captivity. They require high humidity and diet that consists of about 60% fruit, 35% greens and 5% protein! This means that apart from giving frequent fruits and greens, they occasionally should receive some protein in the form of insects, meat or hard boiled eggs!
