๐Ÿฑ Caring for Newborn Kittens

In the first few weeks, the mother cat does almost everything her kittens need:

๐Ÿพ Protection & feeding

โ€ข Her first milk, colostrum, gives vital disease protection.

โ€ข She keeps kittens warm, close, and well-fed.

โ€ข Kittens find her by following vibrations from her purr.

๐Ÿพ Growth milestones

โ€ข Birth weight: ~100g โ†’ doubles in 1 week โ†’ triples in 3 weeks.

โ€ข Constant feeding, with kneading paws to keep milk flowing.

โ€ข By 4 weeks: using the litter tray and trying solid food.

โ€ข By 6 weeks: grooming themselves, each other, and bonding.

๐Ÿพ When to step in

Most mothers manage perfectly on their own. Only intervene if sheโ€™s unwell or unable to feed. Hand-rearing is possible but demanding, and fragile kittens need round-the-clock care.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Support mum with plenty of food, fresh water, and a quiet, safe space. Sheโ€™ll do the rest.

Weโ€™re here if you need advice on caring for kittens or hand-rearing. ๐Ÿฑโค๏ธ

๐Ÿพ What to Expect When Your Cat Goes Into Labour ๐Ÿพ

Most cats give birth without needing help, but here are the key things to look out for:

๐Ÿฑ ๐˜ฝ๐™š๐™›๐™ค๐™ง๐™š ๐™ก๐™–๐™—๐™ค๐™ช๐™ง

โ€ข Restlessness, meowing, purring, or panting.

โ€ข Loss of appetite about 24 hours before birth.

โ€ข Nesting behaviour and seeking comfort.

๐Ÿฑ ๐˜ฟ๐™ช๐™ง๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™ก๐™–๐™—๐™ค๐™ช๐™ง

1๏ธโƒฃ Stage One: Early contractions (not always visible). Your cat may scratch at bedding or return to her nest.

2๏ธโƒฃ Stage Two: Strong contractions. Each kitten is delivered in a fluid sac, which the mother breaks before cleaning and stimulating her kitten. Delivery takes 5โ€“30 minutes per kitten.

3๏ธโƒฃ Stage Three: The placenta (afterbirth) is passed, usually after each kitten.

Whatโ€™s normal?

โ€ข Kittens born every 10 minsโ€“1 hour.

โ€ข A pause of 24โ€“36 hours between kittens is possible.

โ€ข Mother usually cleans and feeds kittens right away.

โš ๏ธ Call a vet immediately if:

โ€ข 20 minutes of straining produces no kitten.

โ€ข A kitten is stuck for more than 10 minutes.

โ€ข Your cat shows pain, fever, heavy bleeding, or unusual lethargy.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Stay close but donโ€™t interfere unless necessary. Once all kittens are born, replace bedding with clean, soft materials.

At Vetocare, weโ€™re here to support you and your cat every step of the way. ๐Ÿฑ

Did you know dogs have 18 muscles to move their ears? ๐Ÿ˜…
Next time your pup tilts or wiggles their ears, youโ€™ll know itโ€™s all muscle power! ๐Ÿถ

This impressive number of muscles gives dogs much greater control over their ear movements compared to humans, who have only six. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

๐Ÿพ 3 Fascinating Facts About Veterinary Medicine

1๏ธโƒฃ The first veterinarians were from Ancient Egypt
Veterinary medicine dates back to around 3000 BCE. The Egyptian Papyrus of Kahun is the earliest known record of veterinary practices.

2๏ธโƒฃ The oldest known veterinary text was created in India
The Shalihotra Samhita, written during the era of Emperor Ashoka, is one of the earliest veterinary treatises. Ashoka even declared: โ€œEverywhere King Piyadasi (Ashoka) made two kinds of medicine available: medicine for people and medicine for animals.โ€

3๏ธโƒฃ The worldโ€™s first veterinary school was founded in France
In 1762, Claude Bourgelat established the first veterinary school in Lyon โ€” shaping the modern field of veterinary medicine.

๐Ÿพ Today, we honour the past, celebrate the present, and appreciate the amazing people who continue this important work in Mauritius.

Separation anxiety isnโ€™t bad behaviour. itโ€™s your petโ€™s way of showing stress and uncertainty.

Common signs include:

๐Ÿถ Whining, barking, or howling when left alone

๐Ÿพ Pacing, panting, or drooling

๐Ÿชต Chewing or scratching doors and furniture

๐Ÿšฝ Accidents indoors despite being house-trained

๐Ÿ’” Clinginess or restlessness when youโ€™re about to leave

Gentle reminder: these behaviours are signs of distress - not defiance. Your pet is looking for reassurance, not punishment. ๐Ÿฉต

Many pet parents wonder: โ€œIs it OK to give my dog ice? ๐Ÿค”

Good news ๐Ÿ˜Œ if your dog is healthy, ice treats are generally safe as long as the size is appropriate to avoid choking.

Here are some safe cooling ideas:

๐Ÿพ For small dogs: Tiny ice cubes with a little kibble, carrot, or cheese

๐Ÿพ For large dogs: Frozen treats in a muffin tray with veggies, cheese, or kibble

๐Ÿพ Bonus: Frozen apple, banana, or carrot slices โ€” cool, crunchy, and refreshing!

โš ๏ธ But remember:

๐Ÿ†˜ If your dog shows signs of heatstroke:

โœ… Do NOT give ice cubes

โœ… Cool gradually with damp towels

โœ… Seek immediate veterinary help

Keeping your pet cool = keeping them safe. ๐Ÿ’™
