Few Acres

Few Acres "It’s not how much land but how you use it that count" - this fueled us to start out farming on a small piece of land in 2022.

We are an integrated organic farm.

It has been a busy week for us - from searching a new land to purchase to Soya harvesting then presently extension of our pigsty.

Some lessons

• Kwacha is on free-fall. Considering this, the longer you put projects on hold, the more expensive things become. For instance, the extension of our pigsty, we are running it at 25% more than initially budgeted (September 2022). We could have saved this amount and invest it elsewhere had it been we didn’t reschedule.

• Regarding building kholas – Thoroughly do your homework, design, think thru everything then present the blueprint to the foremen for their suggestions. Let it be known to them, you know what you want, this way coupled with close monitoring be assured of quality delivery.

• With the devastating effects of Cyclone Freddy, especially in the Southern Region - more people are selling land to sort various things. Therefore, you can capitalize on this to buy more land for you!

Winter is fast approaching, during this season pig's necessity is warmth. They consume a lot but put on less weight - therefore strive to maintain the temperature in the pigsty.

We have ran into this sketch, the lay-out of our farm - this was done soon after we purchased our land in 2021. Every Section is strategically positioned. - to facilitate circular agriculture. For example, Knowing that our land slopes towards Crop and Orchard section, therefore we put pigs on the upper side - so as to allow Water used for cleaning sties (which contains nitrogen and potassium) to flow by gravity through Crop and Orchard Sections thereby enriching the soil, and you know what that means; healthy crops means more organic harvest for sale or food for our farm 😎

How we started
Few Acres is on the Inception phase, but there is nothing hindering us from talking of the start. From experience, the beginning is difficult! Despising the small beginnings, we spent months on the deck planning for a mammoth project – thus we were so paralyzed with its huge demands, also fear of failure if the project won’t take off as planned.

Then upon much reading of success stories of many men, we were inspired and enlightened to – “start small yet aim big” – Robert Kiyosaki. “There are more lessons in failure than in success” – Henry Ford. Thus we set out – and bought Four Gilts (young female pigs not bred before), used what we had and started our piggery! Starting really matters, for the intricacies we learn after setting out!

Attached picture - is when we started building our temporary sty - with corrugated sheets around, simple right? And this was within Parents compound!

By the way, thanks for the likes!
