Woow!!!

24/06/2020

ALK 7.2 (Hanna Checker)
CAL 560 (Red Sea)
MAG 1180 (Red Sea)
Nitratos 1 (Red Sea)
Phosphate ULR 1 (Hanna Checker)

ALK 9.5 (Hanna Checker)
CAL 450 (Red Sea)
MAG 1350 (Red Sea)
NItratos 1 (Red Sea)
Phosphate ULR 1 (Hanna Checker)

Happy Reefing!!!

Red Bugs - No More! | Melev's Reef

How to treat for red bugs by Melev’s Reef...Enjoy!

https://www.melevsreef.com/articles/red-bugs-no-more

Red bugs (Tegastes acroporanus) are small flea-like beasts that can infest smooth-skinned acropora sp. Some reefers have gone out of their way to eliminate them from their reef tank, but that is not the purpose of this article. I've seen them in my tank on occasion, but never worried much about them...

Bacteria Driven Aquarium...good read, Enjoy!

As many of you are aware, right before my last system was closed down, it was running on a bacteria driven system. By this I mean that nitrate and phosphate were 100% controlled by the manipulation of beneficial bacteria while coupled with a good skimmer. I was often nitrate limited and had to dose nitrate just to get a reading.

The last system used scoria, a largely inert volcanic stone as the basis for the biological filtration or “houses” for the beneficial bacteria to live in.

This time around I’m going to try these AMS ceramic blocks and balls (that I’ll add pictures of in the comments) from Williamstown Aquarium. You can see in the video just how porous this media is, which demonstrates how water can easily flow through it while still being solid enough to allow massive beneficial bacteria populations.

The power of beneficial bacteria is widely unused or unknown.

Without sufficient amounts of biological media, the amounts of bacteria you need to reduce nitrate and phosphate in your aquarium simply cannot exist. Newer materials and methods of creating biological media suggest that there is more surface area on ceramic blocks such as the ones I’m using in this build that will allow more bacteria to colonise within them.

This ceramic media is placed in your sump in a location where water is able to flow through them easily. Or you can manipulate the types of bacteria you encourage by putting the media in less flow or using an aeration cycle underneath them. This allows different types of bacteria to colonise the media which can dictate whether nitrate or phosphate is consumed more. I’ll add more information about this in some links below to articles I’ve written on another page called MAFAresource

“Bacteria homes”

“The magic of bacteria”

https://www.facebook.com/236543586469243/posts/668379233285674?sfns=mo

To introduce the exact strains of bacteria to your media and speed up the process of natural nutrient reduction without the ongoing use of expensive resins, absorption media that needs to be thrown away, toxic chemicals or organic carbon dosing you can simply add some DrTims Aquatics “Waste Away” to your media when you introduce it. This will give you a head start in the process.

Who else is using a fully bacteria driven system?
