Here’s a little Forky update 🐾

Our fungus boy is going to stay the next 2 weeks with us as his foster daddy is on vacation! Forky is very lovely but hard for us to handle here, especially with Lopez. So both get their outside time separated and everybody is happy 🐶😅 Forky is a cuddly big doggie, he is just too cute 🥰

Next week we have a control appointment with the dermatologist! He still get regularly baths and lots of vitamins. It takes still a little longer for him to fully recover but we are working on it 💪

Please consider supporting Forky by sharing and or donating 👉🏻 https://paypal.me/islaanimalsresuce?locale.x=en_US

Yesterday we received this beautiful momma with her even more adorable babies. 🤩 She had found refuge in a store and it wasn't the best place for her babies, so now she is in a safe place enjoying not having to fight for her food and having some peace and quiet.
This beautiful momma is about 1 year old, her babies are 2/3 weeks old and they are adorable chunky little babies! 🥹
For now she will have some peace and quiet, and in a few weeks it'll be her turn to be sterilized and never ever again have to be r*%&d, pregnant and alone in the streets. 😞
We'll make some fun game soon to give them names, for now, welcome to the IA fam momma and babies!!!! 🤗

✨ New Arrival ✨

This mommie and her 4 puppies are the new family members of Isla Animals ❤️🐶🐾

They are safe now in their own pen, having enough food and mommy does not need to worry about shelter from sun, rain or any other animals!

The puppies have fungus so we will start giving them baths 🛁 but rather than that they look health, happy and chunky ♥️

Mommy is so precious maybe 1 year old and she eats everything she cans, god knows how hard it was for her to find food and care for her little family 🥺

🩺 Vet appointments 🩺

Yesterday we went with Mamacita and Bella to the vet. Mamacita started her chemotherapy against TVT cancer! Bella got her Injection against Heartworms!

TVT Cancer, transmissible venereal tumour is highly contagious 😬 By sniffing they can get it on the nose or mouth, most likely it’s transmitted by s*x! One of the reasons why it’s so important to spay and neuter. It can be treated with Chemotherapy. For Mamacita we probably will need 4 sessions which comes to a total cost of 8000mp ($400USD) you can support her by donating.

Heartworms are spread from one host to the next by mosquitoes 🦟 the worms need 6 months to become adults. Many drugs kill them in their early stage and stop them from developing but once they are adults in the heart the treatment is different. Antibiotics for a month and injections. In a stage 2 or higher the dogs have the typical heart cough and are struggling with heat or too much exercise! That’s why Bella our precious girl is just chilling in front of the fan and can take her time to recover! Bella’s treatment will be around 5000pesos ($250USD)! You can also support Bella by donating

We are a little bit behind with so much work but it was International Day of Charity and what a best occasion to remind everyone of how vital, important and fundamental is your donation to the Isla Animals mission! ❤

You can set up a monthly donation to contribute to the basic expenses of food and vetting for all the rescues, it's easy to set up and it truly is the basis of all we do.
You can also opt for a one time donation if you prefer, or you can check out our GoFundMe where we are still raising funds to finish Isla Animals Oasis.

Your contribution matters. Caring is Global. Thank you! 🐶🐱

Thank you to our dear friends of Cocina & Bar for always supporting our work! You can go visit them, grab a delicious meal and drop off donations for the animals (food, leashes, collars, toys, any kind of supplies... always welcomed!) and you can also find an Isla Animals T-shirt!

Definitely the most YummY way to help! 😆

Adoptions to the US starting August 1st. 🤔

As we mentioned some time before the CDC has changed the requirements to enter the US starting August 1st. So… what does this mean for you if you’re interested in adopting from Isla Animals? 😱

The main changes include a microchip and a CDC permit, things we can comply with no problem. The main challenge we find is that doggies now have to be 6 months to enter the US‼️. This is with no exceptions… and it doesn’t only affect rescue dogs and adoptions… this is for everybody!
The intent is to control rabies being “imported”, however, that makes no sense when dogs are coming from free or low-risk countries and are compliant with all the vetting necessary to enter. Did you know that Mexico is rabies free since 2019? (You can find info on rabies in Mexico here: https://www.unitedagainstrabies.org/news/how-mexico-achieved-rabies-free-status/).

Why is this such a big deal? Wait two more months and that’s it. 🤷‍♀️

Well… there is one main reason, with some ripples.

First, airlines are not flying checked dogs to the US. The only ones doing it are Air Alaska, Aeromexico and Volaris, so if a dog is too big to fly in cabin (and by 6 months most are), they are incredibly limited in their chances to get adopted in the US, partly cause we cannot find flight angels in those, and it would require their adopters to come get them or arrange more expensive and complex logistics to get their dogs.

We mentioned ripples, and that’s because by 6 months old doggies are already starting their teenager phase, and rescues will have to invest in somewhat training these puppies, who already need more space, exercise, attention, socialization… apart from extending vetting for 2 extra months (preventatives, tests and of course, the required food and labor).
Finally, a lot of people prefer younger puppies as they are easier to bond with and start training earlier, and just overall super cute right? 😏

So… this is our new challenge… and it truly changes the base of how we work. Since we are going to have puppies here for a lot longer, regardless of them being fully vetted and ready, there may be not-so-lucky puppies that won’t be saved, as proper vetting protocols of isolation are something we are not going to sacrifice.
Additionally, it’s not guaranteed they leave by the time they are 6 months, given the airline limitations. So, we need to be ready to have doggies here much longer than we used to.

So we have a lot of new projects in the making to continue making an impact... after all not having puppies born in the street is the real solution!

A little reminder on what it means to adopt a rescue dog... You're not only saving the life of that one dog.... but the lives of the many more that can be saved because you adopted that one... Every dog adopted makes space for the next one mangy, sick, tiny, desperate, hungry dog that we can help.

Caring is Global and lending a helping hand is contagious! Together we can do it!

🚨 Mamacita and Bebecita 🚨
Are looking for home! In the best case one for both 🐾 as they are really bonded!
We were trapping them for an emergency spay as both were on heat. The plan was to release them after 2 days again! Sadly Mamacita has TVT cancer. Of course we will not put them back on the street til she finished her chemotherapy and is healthy enough! You can support her by donating for her Chemotherapy (8000 pesos)

Mika loooooves Donations, same as us! ♥️
Especially if it’s a lot of flea/tick, dewormer and heartworm prevention! Those are the meds we use the most! You can have a look on our website www.islaanimals.org at Donations you can find how and what to donate! We also have an Amazon wishlist! With the construction of Isla Animals Oasis we really appreciate PayPal or gfm donations https://paypal.me/islaanimalsresuce?locale.x=en_US ! But everytime we get donations like that or simply food donations it feels not only for us like Christmas! Especially with food, flea and tick meds we can do outreach projects and make the streetdoggies day a little better ♥️

Thank you all for your kind and loving support we wouldn’t be able to help the streetanimals without your help ♥️

We try to go regularly into certain areas with a huge streetdog population to feed them, medicate them, give them flea/tick, deworm them and of course give them lots of love 🥰 With our own surgery room doing regularly small spay and neuter clinic days, we can trap the dogs constantly. And with that make at least in one area a tiny change.. What also a massive benefit is of being regularly in one area the locals will know the „Gringas“ and hopefully work with us together, some kids are interested in what we are doing and especially for them we try to take our time, showing them that those dogs are not dangerous, explaining which and why we give them medicine! Educating them on how to treat their own animals. Cause they are the next generation and we have to do everything to teach them to be kind to the ones who need it the most 🫶🏼🐾🫶🏼

Wha'ts wrong with Louise? 🤔
This little precious baby was born with something called swimmer puppy syndrome. 😱

While all puppies are bron with lose tendons, when they are healthy they develop normally and start walking and all. Luise's mom was not healthy and her puppies paid the price. Louise's hindlegs started to show clear symptoms of this syndrome.

It's pretty easy to see as her back legs are spread to the sides. By the time she was 1 month old, when she came to us, she was not able to walk and would mostly crawl.
These puppies will grown to be disabled if something is not done at an early age. So we knew we were right on time for Louise. 🙏

Louise is having swimming lessons which help build muscle on her back legs, and she get daily therapy to strenghen her hindlegs. And she's doing amazingly!!!! ☺️ She walks, runs and even hops, often she kinda goes down on her back legs, and she may always walk funny, but she will walk which is something we are fighting for so she has a better chance to find her family! ❤

When we take cases like this, or Esperanza, or dogs that we know need medical care and consistent attention, we commit to it, her therapy must be done every day, there are no holidays, no Sundays... we alo know that taking doggies like this we may be forced to say no to others. And that's ok... we will not ever be able to take every single dog, but the ones we do take in will have the best possible chance for a great life and a loving family! It's a hard exercise to strenghen our own souls but we cannot sacrifice the wellbeing of the doggies we do take in for the sake of clearing the streets... do keep in mind there are over 20 million dogs in the streets in Mexico! 😟

🐈🐈‍⬛ Kitty cats 🐱♥️

Have you met our cats?? Currently we have two available for adoption cats! Let us introduce you to the awesome Salem and Señor Gato ♥️🐾♥️

Salem our very talkative, black cat 🐈‍⬛ we found him on the streets, he was begging us to take him and we couldn’t resist his cute character ♥️ Salem is probably 2-3 years old and has 5kg. He is super social, loves humans, cats, doesn’t mind dogs, he basically loves everybody and everything! ♥️♥️♥️

Señor Gato used to live in front of our apartments on Isla Mujeres. We were feeding him, gato used to be really shy but started liking us and we decided we will not leave him back. So he moved with us to Isla Animals Oasis shelter! We would love a home for him where his future people have patience as he is still very shy with new people! Señor Gato is probably around 8 years old or maybe even older, he has 6kg and basically likes to chill and eat all day 😅

If you are interested in adopting one of our lovely cats or want more information dm us or send an email to [email protected] 🐈‍⬛

Can someone explain to us how it’s possible that our handsome Señor Lopez hasn’t found his person???

Lopez is now for over an year with us! We found him on the highway when we were on our way to the construction of Isla Animals Oasis! He was exhausted, dehydrated and limping.. we couldn’t leave him there! We got him neutered, he had a femur head removal surgery and a teeth surgery! Today he is a healthy, happy boy! We guess he is about 5 or 6 years old. Señor Lopez has 18kg. He loves to cuddle, play and chill with you on the couch! The only thing he doesn’t like is male dogs and sharing his homans, but he is fine with other females. On walks he pulls the leash at the beginning but calms down after awhile and is willing to learn (but sadly we do not have the time to properly train him).

We are searching for him a place where he can be a single dog with an experienced dog person 🐶

If you are interested or want more information dm us or send an email to [email protected] 🐾

Please share Señor Lopez so he can finally find his pawfect match and gets all the attention he deserves cause he is just the best dog! 🐶

What’s new at Isla Animals Oasis? 🧐
It’s been a while since we showed you what’s new around here, mostly cause we have been distracted with new dogs and our first spay and neuter campaign on site. But, even busier than ever, we continue working on our shelter and, as usual, we need your help to keep going! 🙏

We still need to get a door for our shelter room, hopefully, before the next hurricane comes by, our isolation areas finally got a roof, now we need some finishing touches and little gates to start using them, as well as all electric and plumbing upstairs 🫠!

Fencing is another thing we really need to get on going 😱, as we have a few dogs lose around the property, but every time we go in and out, they do like to go out for a stroll and with the recent cases of poisoning in our area, we cannot let them.

Our volunteers’ apartment is the project we have been sitting on. While we would love to have it done and therefore be able to receive volunteers (desperately need the help!), we are trying to assign whatever funds we have to the dogs’ areas. Everything in its own time… hopefully we can get to it sooner rather than later as we already have a lot of enquires about coming and staying at Oasis, something we really want to do in the future!

We are building a lot ourselves, something we did from the beginning to use your donations in the best possible way, and it’s amazing what we have achieved so far! But, like when we started, with only a quarter of what we thought would be the budget to build this place, only with the faith that showing, not just promising, would engage our community and help us make this place what we had dreamt of (and cannot thank you all enough for getting us this far!), we continue with one project after another as possibilities allow, also never stopping our rescue mission.

Our GFM is still active and donations help us continue…

Adopting to Europe 🐾

Yes we do adopt dogs to Europe and it’s not that difficult! Isla Animals is really strict with vetting so only thing missing for a dog from Isla Animals to fly to Europe is a Microchip (which is now as well a requirement for the US) and 2 days before you fly you have to go to the airport so they can check the papers! Yes that’s all! It’s that simple!

Last week we had a couple from Germany visiting our Isla Animals Oasis shelter and they decided to adopt one of our puppies Woody (now Mango) 🥭🐶 2 days later he sat with them in the plane on his way into his German life ♥️

There is nothing better than seeing rescue dogs finding their humans ♥️

25/08/2024

This last year all we did was looking into the future, desperately trying to shape it, fighting for every animal plus building a space for them to be safe. We still have ways to go, but we are operational and having shared our little inauguration with the people that were pillars for this endeavor has made us think of the past. 24 years of history is very long for a rescue... and something really special has happened to Isla Animals... we survived... many many challenges... and we developed and grew and became stronger. ❤
Some of you may be new to Isla Animals, some may be following our work for years. In any case, if you want to see where it all started, shed some tears and laughs, and understand where Isla Animals come from, that little spark that makes us different, our history and the passion and love that still today ignites our souls, this is a must read. 😊

"The Dog Lady of Mexico" is a heartwarming memoir by Alison Sawyer Current, detailing her transformation from a regular life in the U.S. to becoming a devoted animal rescuer in Mexico. After moving to Isla Mujeres, Alison was moved by the plight of countless stray dogs and took it upon herself to care for them, providing food, shelter, and medical care. The book captures her challenges and successes as she turns her home into a sanctuary, working tirelessly to rescue and rehome these animals. Alison’s dedication not only saves lives but also inspires a community, making "The Dog Lady of Mexico" a powerful story of compassion and the impact one person can have.

We can't do anything without your help. Yor donations and support is what keep the dream real. All of you are part of the ever evolving little rescue that started long ago with one good deed. 🙏

The Dog Lady of Mexico can be found on Amazon!
