🌱 Urban Farm Tech x IMCD Back at SKJE! 🌱

Last Friday, August 9th, 2024, we returned to SKJE for another exciting Smart Farming workshop! 🎉 The students got hands-on experience with germination, running a hydroponic tower, and even making their own pesto sauce. Plus, we harvested the crops from our last visit at the SKJE Smart Farm! 🌿✨

The vertical farm integrated with an IoT smart farming system at SMK Tun Syed Nasir Ismail is now completed. We are excited to collaborate with the students to produce healthy, locally grown food, empowered by advanced farming technology.

I was deeply honored to host a visit from students of my alma mater, now known as Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology , a significant evolution from the Tunku Abdul Rahman College I once attended. This occasion marked the first time since my graduation that I've had the opportunity to connect with so many juniors, and I'm thrilled to have shared insights from my journey in entrepreneurship, especially our focus on societal problem-solving.

We delved into the realities of the contemporary world, discussing the myriad opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. Despite the passage of time and the seismic shifts in our global landscape, one thing remains steadfast: the resilience and readiness of Tarcians to face challenges head-on and contribute to a brighter future.

The Sustainable Food Camp 2024, an event organized by Sustainable Food Asia in collaboration with Leave A Nest and Ajinomoto, was successfully held last week. The event was attended by companies and universities from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Korea, and Japan. Together, we brainstormed ideas for the future of sustainable food. Our team presented one of the winning idea, Farm-Collab, which focuses on empowering smallholder farmers through integrated finance, supply chain, and technology.

This experience was invaluable as it allowed us to collaborate with others, contributing our ideas towards a common goal. We strongly believe that collaboration is essential for making food sources sustainable and creating a significant impact. Additionally, sustainable food initiatives must prioritize the well-being and sustainability of farmers.

Months ago, a group of students from UiTM, led by Dr.Rashidy Samsudin , Dr. Norhikma Yusof and their colleagues, paid a visit to our urban farm. We shared with them our passion and knowledge for urban farming here at Urban Farm Hub Cyberjaya.

Yesterday, we were honored to be invited to their student FYP showcase at the Ibis Hotel in Melaka. We were truly impressed by their ability to create innovative urban farming system prototypes that cater to diverse environments. They presented ideas that we had never even considered before.

One of the key components of their FYP design is about susitainabillity. These students not only demonstrated a deep understanding of how to apply design thinking in their work but also showcased impressive hands-on skills, including 3D printing, fibreglass fabrication and steel welding, all of which they acquired within just one year at their university after the MCO.

The showcase exemplifies that Malaysia is rich in innovation and talent. A key factor in nurturing these young talents is having dedicated mentors like their lecturer, who is incredibly humble, positive, energetic, and supportive, working hand in hand with the students towards their path to success.

Yesterday, on December 14, 2023, we had the privilege of hosting an smart farming workshop as part of the X-celerate program for Maybank the largest bank in Malaysia. Participants were carefully chosen from various divisions of Maybank, with X-celerate serving as the seed program for future leaders within the organization. We are delighted to have shared our journey and experiences in urban food sustainability, engaging actively with the participants. Their involvement and feedback provide us with valuable insights, creating a mutually beneficial opportunity for learning, especially regarding the role the banking industry can play in sustainability initiatives.

This workshop marks a significant milestone in our collaboration with banking sector, as we work together to empower sustainable communities through urban farming. It reflects our commitment to fostering partnerships that contribute to positive and lasting change.

We are excited about the prospects that lie ahead and look forward to further collaborations that will contribute to the broader vision of a sustainable and resilient future.

This program marks our inaugural collaboration with Maybank's training provider, Thriving Talents. Their exceptional professionalism and coordinated services played a pivotal role in ensuring the success of the program.

Last Saturday marked an exceptionally demanding weekend for the UFT team. Following the successful conclusion of our interview with 8TV, we seamlessly transitioned to another pivotal event—an impactful training session and the formal handover of a smart farm to Sekolah Kebangsaan Jalan Empat Bangi.

In close collaboration with IMCD, a multinational company spanning over 60 countries across six continents, we undertook the ambitious task of developing a smart farm project for the school. This initiative is intricately designed to provide students with comprehensive training in smart farming techniques and entrepreneurship skills. The collective effort sought to empower students with valuable knowledge and hands-on experience, underscoring our joint commitment to education and innovation.

We firmly believe that our vision is drawing closer through collaborations with like-minded entities sharing the same intent to enhance our future and promote sustainability. Our commitment to urban farming, coupled with smart farming technologies for the youth, serves as a pivotal approach to ensuring a continual influx of innovative minds into our society. By cultivating a new generation versed in sustainable agricultural practices, we are positioning ourselves for a resilient and forward-looking food system. As we step into 2023, our collaboration with other entities will only strengthen, and with the imminent arrival of 2024, we are gearing up to intensify our mission with unwavering momentum.

In expressing our deep respect and gratitude, we acknowledge and thank our UFT team members who worked diligently behind the scenes to bring this project to success. Special appreciation goes to the young UFT team members who supported the project from its inception through the setup phase and into the training phase. Their dedication and contributions have been instrumental in the realization of this impactful initiative.

It was a thrilling morning spent with our partner, Shell, engaging in a productive harvest session at their office farm, which saw enthusiastic participation from many young and energetic team members.

Throughout the event, we discussed the concept of a circular economy exemplified by this project, leveraging solar power and rainwater harvesting to energize the urban farm. Additionally, we highlighted our UFT solution, driven by a smart farming system, enabling everyone to cultivate effortlessly.

The team displayed tremendous support by actively engaging in replanting after the harvest, demonstrating a willingness to get their hands dirty in this meaningful project.
