Dog owners in Penang, for your attention

MBPP: No tags for dogs in high-rise homes but it’s okay

GEORGE TOWN, Jan 27 : Dogs living in high-rise homes will not be issued tags by the city council.

Penang’s by-laws forbid their owners from getting dog licences if they live in flats, apartments and condominiums as they are not allowed to rear dogs there.

City councillor Connie Tan said the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) was aware that many high-rise homeowners keep dogs nonetheless.

“We do not interfere in this or enforce the law as long as their management committees are okay with it.

We are not harsh about it nor do we do enforcement rounds into strata properties to check.

“However, we do not give out licences to dogs living in strata properties. Dog owners must show proof of a landed property by submitting a utility bill when applying for a licence,” she said at MBPP’s Veterinary Unit in River Road.

When applying for licences, dog owners may show officers a soft copy of the photo of themselves and their pets if they are unable to print the image.

Tan, who is the MBPP stray and abandoned dogs sub-committee chairman, said MBPP would not catch stray dogs unless there were complaints.

“It does not matter if the dog has a tag or not, the council will catch the dog if it is found roaming around after we receive complaints.

“If the dog has a tag, we look for the owner and inform them that we have their dog.

“If the dog does not have a tag, we keep the dog for three days for it to be claimed.

“If unclaimed within those three days, we follow our standard operating procedure, which is to trap, neuter and release.”

Under by-laws enacted in 1977, it is compulsory for dog owners to have licences.

Tan said veterinary officers would go house-to-house regularly to advise dog owners to obtain licences for their pets.

These visits are done on weekends and public holidays.

“We find that this has made a difference as the number of applicants has increased.

“In 2021, the number of dog licences issued was 1,309 and last year, it increased to 2,309.”

MBPP also has booths in various locations for dog owners to get licences on the spot.

“We hope to see more dog owners get their licences. As of Jan 16, there have been 387 applications,” she said.

Tan called on dog owners to ensure that their dogs were vaccinated against disease and also to neuter them to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

She urged the public to work with MBPP’s Veterinary Unit to make sure their dogs had licences.

“Sometimes people think our officers are scammers when we contact them to come collect the licence if they have applied online. We’re just informing them the tag is ready for pick-up.”

It is not cruel to cage or tie them vs having them run away and get killed by vehicles or lost.

This gorgeous young man, BLACKIE is up for adoption.
He is small size estimated 15kg

Vaccination and he is SPECIAL.
HE IS A TRIPOD.

He lost his back leg to infection after her got bitten by another dog.
It was a big misunderstanding as Blackie is super duper friendly kiddo and he approached a not so friendly dog who took his friendliness the wrong way.

Blackie is gorgeous and he will do well even in a high rise home.

With a suitable harness he can be walked and take out like any other four legged dog.

SOME ROTTEN PIECE OF S**T dumped two tiny kittens at the Tanjung Bungah market.

They are running around the market, skinny like skeletons and huge bellies - suspect worms!

They are in danger of getting bitten by the dogs when they come out to roam.

My hands are tied.
Seriously, tied and I don't have the money to rescue them or home them or board them after.

Yes, some will say " can adopt out after. So cute"

Heard that many times...ugh! Are you willing to adopt?

For giving us the privilege to transport Mr Styles from Penang to his loving adopter Miss Laura in KL.
My husband provided the happy drive with Styles.
He said Styles immediately brighten up and was all tails and wags, when he heard Laura's voice when they arrived.
Styles was a sweetheart all through the drive.

Mr Styles was in the SAMA adoption care with Miss Vaneytha as he was one of the unfortunate sweety pies who was mistreated by his previous owner.

That is HISTORY and now he is on his journey with his ever loving mama who loves him so much.

He was imported from Thailand and they decided they didn't want him and can't afford to pay for boarding.

If adopter can't afford this DONT ADOPT. THE MONTHLY CARE COST MORE THEN THE ONE TIME NEUTERING.

TEMPERAMENT : This boy very active and vocal so need big garden, lots of exercise and enrichment, also cool indoor living. You know lah what huskies are like. So susah but people want because they are pretty 😕

So if anyone would be willing to give him that high maintenance home... that would be great. It's too crowded for him at the private shelter and soon he will have skin problems with all that thick fur.

Found her at JJ Garden few days ago and my instinct immediately kicked in to get her SPAYED ASAP.

So I messaged one of my trusted go to Island Vet ( actually about another case but that's in LIMBO ) SO, I took the slot for her.

Found that she is in the very early stages of pregnancy and I made the decision to abort and spay her.
I will definitely get scolded by few that I took this choice.
Let it be my sin then having unwanted kittens or no home for the kittens.

She will be staying at the vet for 3 to 5 days for healing and hopefully 1st vaccination can be given.
After that I will have no choice but to release her back.

Do you stop and feed a hungry stray? You don't have to look for them BUT if you came across one or two.

I mean it's nothing much.
Maybe a piece of fish or chicken?
Does not cost much.
A couple of RM to take away their hunger for that one meal.

I do.
No matter how tight my pocket is, I will buy a piece of chicken or fish or take from my plate and give.
Not tooting my own horn, just saying I know what and how it feels like to be hungry.
How your mouth fills with saliva and your tummy rumbles like a stamped of wild bulls.
I am fat and tubby but i had my years of being hungry and totally having 0.

So, when I saw this pregnant kitten who is having kittens of her own... I could not close my eyes.
I cant take her back.
Send her to the vet? For? She ain't sick. She's having babies. Too far along to abort.
Put in boarding?
Can.
Paying with what funds?
Then the kittens come. Then what? Find homes? And when that does not turn out as planned? What do I do with the kittens and mommy when I am already in a sinking ship with my kids.

So, I did what I could.
I bought her a big piece of juicy fish.
I sat with her and made sure NO ONE disturbed her.
I stroked her and I told her how sorry I am.
How sorry I am for failling her.

After she ate her fish, she rubbed on me as a thank you and she left a little for another cat who is also a kitten, having kittens.

It SUCKS.
It's not right that they have such lives when a simple TNR costing what RM 300ish? Could prevent them having kittens and these kittens dying.

Three good things one can do is:
Please feed them
Please, please, please, please, please, please spay and neuter them.
Please do not harm them. Their life ain't a bed of roses. Cos roses have thorns.
Don't be a thorn to them.
