"My horse needs to be trained so he doesn't end up in the slaughter pipeline if anything happens to me." I used to truly believe this, and there's a good chance you might too. After more than 2 decades re-examining this belief, here's what I've found.

The Myth of Training as a Safeguard: Why Rideable Horses Aren't Immune to Slaughter

In the equestrian world, there's a pervasive belief that training a horse to be ridden increases its value and protects it from an unfortunate fate. However, this notion not only oversimplifies a complex issue but also overlooks the potential harm that training itself can cause.

The quality of training varies widely, and poorly trained horses or those with behavioral issues due to physical limitations and/or improper handling may actually be less desirable than untrained horses with good temperaments. Moreover, intensive training can lead to physical injuries and mental stress, potentially shortening a horse's useful lifespan or making them less suitable for riding. These factors can paradoxically decrease a horse's perceived value and increase their vulnerability.

Beyond the potential pitfalls of training itself, the horse industry faces a significant overbreeding problem. Each year, more horses are born than can be adequately cared for, regardless of their training status. This surplus contributes to the number of horses at risk of slaughter. Economic factors also play a crucial role; during financial downturns, even well-trained horses can become burdens, leading owners to sell or surrender them.

As horses age or develop health issues, their ability to be ridden diminishes. Training doesn't protect them from the effects of time or illness, which can lead to decreased perceived value.

Horse rescues and sanctuaries, while vital, have limited resources and space. They simply can't absorb all unwanted horses, regardless of training status. It's worth noting that many people seek horses as companions rather than riding animals, and in this context, an untrained but friendly horse might be more appealing.

The horse slaughter problem is rooted in systemic issues like irresponsible breeding, lack of end-of-life planning, and treating horses as commodities rather than sentient beings. Some organizations have found success in rehoming horses by focusing on their individual personalities and potential as companions, rather than their rideability.

While training can provide horses with skills people are looking for, it's not a guaranteed protection against slaughter. The solution lies in addressing root causes: promoting responsible ownership, supporting ethical breeding practices, and changing societal attitudes towards horses. We need a paradigm shift that values horses for their intrinsic worth, not just their utility.

This includes supporting sanctuaries, implementing stricter breeding regulations (especially in the racing and performance horse worlds), and educating the public about the lifelong commitment of horse ownership. By focusing on these systemic changes and promoting a more holistic view of horses' value, we can work towards a future where no horse, trained or untrained, faces the threat of slaughter. The path forward isn't through increased training, but through universal respect and responsibility for them.

So important but often overlooked ! A requirement of basic horse welfare - You wouldn't consider it an option for a human being so why (?!?!) would you do this to a horse ?

An important reminder with the temperatures this week.

Does your horse go outside during the day? That’s awesome! What a wonderful weather it is! At least we think, under the parasol with sunglasses and a cool drink.

But horses are not made to soar in the sun.

In fact, they are originally from a cold climate and better cope with the cold than the heat.

Horses do not want and should not be in the full burning sun. Not even for just a few hours.

Alone in an 8x8 paddock outside is certainly better than in a 3x3 dark stable - but it is a burden when there is little to do and there is no shade to hide from the sun.

Like any other animal, a horse chooses shade and rest in the midday sun and we as responsible owners have to take that into account.

The best option is a large, varied meadow with trees and shelters where the horses are allowed to rest and graze in a group. And where fresh water is present at all times.

Overheating is a problem to be taken seriously, also in the Netherlands!

Unfortunately, I still see it far too often, along the roads, horses in small pastures or paddocks without shade. Please take this seriously! Sharing is appreciated because we do it for the horses 🐴❀️

Empowering Equine - Training & Behaviour Thanks

🌾✨ Trust your intuition and be your true compassionate self with your horses. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.

When I was a little girl, I loved hanging around the horses on our family farm. One day, the barn staff struggled to catch a mare, and I looked up at my grandfather and said, "Oupa, she just wants to be free."

As I started competing and being exposed to the traditional horse world, I began losing sight of who I truly was. I like to think of myself as a kind, empathetic, and compassionate soul, but in that environment, it was difficult to be authentic and treat horses the way I believed they should be treated.

It takes bravery to be kind and to stay true to ourselves, but our horses deserve nothing less. 🐴❀️

Have you ever felt the pressure to conform in the horse world? How do you stay true to yourself and your beliefs with your horses? Share your stories below! πŸ‘‡

What does it mean when your horse is β€˜barn sour’ or β€˜buddy sour’ ?

These labels are used often. β€œMy horse loses their mind when I ride away from the barn” or β€œMy horse can’t focus if he/she is away from their friends”.
They’re not barn sour or buddy sour. They are in a physical and mental state of emergency. I’m sure you’ve heard that making the wrong thing hard and the right thing easy is the solution but overfacing and overworking the horse in an attempt to force a level of acceptance or to cause fatigue are not solutions, they ultimately result in bigger problems.

When a horse is taken from what’s most familiar to them, their comfort level changes drastically UNLESS they have learned to find comfort and confidence in YOU. They need thought provoking, physically engaging dialogue. They need to be free of tension to move their neck and back and extend their range of motion. They need you to ride balanced and correct. They need you to be confident in your abilities as a team.

Your horse will thank you for it 🀠
