Do you need plants in your aquarium?
Well, aside from looking absolutely stunning, these plants also offer a myriad of benefits.
Most notably being that plants act as a natural filtration system for your water.
They consume nitrogen, amonia and other nutrients in the water that in large amounts may be harmful for you fish.
Excess nutrients paired with light also produce algae, so if you want to light your aquarium but don't want algae, try aquatic plants.
A bonus from these two benefits is that plants will photosynthesize and produce oxygen which will dissolve into the water column, ensuring your fishes don't suffocate.
Certain plants like guppy grass and Java moss actually promote fish reproduction, making the parents feel much more comfortable in giving birth or laying eggs.
Densely planted tanks provide hiding spots for your newly hatched/born fishes, giving them a better chance of maturing.
Floating plants also affords all of the above benefits for your tank, with our personal favourite being the large water lettuce as the roots give the fish fry ample hiding spots.
Aquatic plants however do not fair well with large fishes like Arowanas, as these predatory fishes will eat and destroy the plants, unless you get extremely large plants.
J.Barry Aquascape has a selection of easy to maintain plants that don't require Co2 injection or high lighting.
-Water wisteria
-Java fern
-Java moss (avoid high temperatures, this moss loves below room temperature water)
-Hornwort
-Amazon Swords
-Water Thyme
-Duckweed
-Azola
-Salvinia

Let's meet fishes today.
Here we have the common Molly, a hardy fish that is very well acclimated to malaysian waters.
This fish is a great choice for beginners trying out aquascaping because they're hard to kill and will eat algae from plants and glass.
Molly's come in many different combinations of fin length, color and roundness. Mainly there are lyretails, sailfin, 24k gold, yellow, Dalmatian, balloon, and a combination of some and even all of those traits, like the sailfin lyretail 24k Dalmatian balloon Molly (damn that's a long name).
Here at J.Barry Aquascape we take good care of our fish so that you can be sure to bring home the best.
New fishkeepers will always ask the question "Do I need an oxygen pump?".
The answer is "Maybe", because the air bubbles produced by a pump are too big to dissolve into water.
So, it's not an oxygen pump that you will need when taking care of fish, its surface agitation, or anything to move the surface of the water to facilitate gas exchange.
What is "Gas exchange?".
Gas exchange is when Carbon Dioxide (Co2) and Oxygen are exchanged between the water body and the air above it.
This is how aquatic life get their oxygen, and how the Co2 they produce is removed from the water.
Surface agitation ensures the gases can move freely, creating a more liveable and natural body of water for your finned friends.
Here at J.Barry Aquascape, we can set you up based on the aquatic life you wish to keep, as some may require gentle surface agitation, where others would want river rapids-like flow.
