Rabbit Liver Lobe Torsion

Liver lobe torsion occurs when a section (or more) of the liver twists around its blood vessels, leading to compromised blood flow and potentially severe consequences if not treated promptly. The clinical signs of cases like this are non-specific, ranging from loss of appetite to various signs of pain (such as hunching, teeth grinding, and inactivity). It is crucial for bun parents to recognize these symptoms early and seek veterinary care as soon as possible. Delay in diagnosis can lead to detrimental effects. Treatment typically involves surgical intervention and usually results in a good outcome if performed promptly.

###x

A rabbit arrived in the afternoon showing signs of poor appetite and lethargy. Blood work and ultrasound were highly suggestive of liver lobe torsion. The diagnosis was confirmed by 4 pm, and surgery was successfully completed by 7 pm, with the rabbit recovering well on pain medication via continuous rate infusion (CRI).

I had traveled to Thailand primarily to learn this surgery (among a long list of other things), having previously diagnosed similar cases but lacking surgical expertise. I received invaluable guidance from experienced veterinarians there who routinely perform this procedure.

I cannot stress enough the importance of agreeing to do a diagnostic workup (blood work & diagnostic imaging). Since rabbits often only show non-specific clinical signs, liver lobe torsion is often missed or underdiagnosed when symptomatic treatment is prioritised over comprehensive evaluation.

I am immensely grateful for the knowledge gained during my one-month attachment at the exotic animal hospital in Thailand. It has fueled my commitment to advancing in exotic medicine and enhancing care for exotic patients.

Learning is a lifelong journey.
P.S.: Never underestimate the importance of thorough diagnostic workups.
