9 points to select healthy cories

As routine, we observe our fish for external cues if there are potential issues. We use the same cues to select new fish. This guide can be used to assess health of cories in shops as well as cories in your care. It will take experience to judge what is 'normal' in the case of cories and there may be internal problems that is difficult to observe - quarantining is still best practice!

Things to check:
1. Clear eyes without cloudiness or abnormal bulging
2. Full bodies - Looks streamlined, no sunken bellies or abnormal bulk.
3. Swims strongly. Healthy fish are very quick!
4. Are not isolating themselves - Sick fish tend to be isolated from other fish or hiding
5. Clear looking scales. Fish in good condition usually have a metallic sheen. The area around the gill plates and along the lateral line is a good place to look
6. Normal looking gills - Gills are not inflamed (bulging and bright/dark red)
7. Strong colours - this can differ depending on species and genes, but strong colours is a good sign
8. Clean skin and fins - excessive mucous or spots can indicate various problems. Pale spots or white streaks with or without blood can indicate injury/infection which can be fatal
9. Deformities - some fish possess congenital deformities (bent fins, bent spines, crooked barbels(and mouth) etc. depending on your intention on breeding these fish or not, these may be acceptable/unacceptable traits

In your tanks, you can observe far more closely their reaction to being fed and how they behave compared to other cories in the tank. Healthy fish have good appetites and will seek out food when being fed.

We hope this helps in looking for healthy cories. Post any questions/comments below. We'd like to hear what you have to say.

In our experience, equipment malfunction is the most common cause for health issues and fish loss. While we may have setup a good tank with healthy cories, our equipment plays a bit part in keeping it that way. A little plumbing, mechanical and electrical knowledge is somehow important in keeping cories successfully. Imagine what happens to them if the power goes out! Equipment checks should be routine.

Some of the equipment issues we've encountered in our Cory tanks
A) pre filter clogging/blocked
B) filter impeller breaking
C) chiller thermal sensor malfunction
D) canister filter (ribbed) hose rupture
E) hose coming loose from filter inlet/outlet
F) air pump failures
E) breakage in air pump tube
G) co2 regulator/solenoid malfunction
H) timer malfunction
I) burnt fuses, power sockets and many more.

It's important to keep an eye equipment to make sure they are working properly as some malfunctions may go unnoticed. Signs to look out for:
1) bubbles from canister filter outflow
2) cories behaving differently (e. g. hiding, lethargic, slow to come to food, etc.)
3) mechanical noises coming from filters
4) poor/no flow from air stones/filter outflows
5) build up of debris and cloudy water
6) signs of bacterial/fungal disease (e. g. Slime buildup on Cory skin)

Our tips for ensuring our equipment function properly in Cory tanks:
1) ensure power load of equipment is within circuit limits and check power sockets ocassionally for signs of failures (burn marks, melting, power trips, etc.)
2) regular maintenance (clean prefilters/ filtration sponges regularly). Lubricate o- rings on canister filters annually.
3) ensure all filter fittings are firmly attached and hoses are clamped when using external filters.
3) spend at least two minutes observing your fish behaviour and health everyday. Look for changes in their behaviour and appearance and identify cause.
4) use two types of thermometers/ sensors. One as backup to another.
5) Check outflow of filters daily. You can use things in the tank as reference for water movement (e.g. plants)
6) investigate and resolve irregular noises/leaks from canister filters (e.g. impeller, intakes, hoses, etc.)
7) repair/replace air pumps with diminished flow and check tubes are intact
8) implement redundancy where possible (extra filters/pumps as backups)

We hope this helps in keeping your cories thriving! Post comments/questions below. We'd like to hear what you have to say.

When we select the colour palette, sometimes we can't believe the variety of colours in a species. They also show differently in different lighting setups. Corydoras Sterbai is a beautiful example of both colour and pattern. It remains one of our favourite species.

The easiest cory to care for..

30/03/2022

As a follow up of our previous posts as we've seen many posts of with tests showing 0 ammonia, nitrites and low nitrates and still lose cories. People seeking advice is often asked for these water parameters on groups. In reality, healthy conditions for cories are more dependent on other variables. These NH tests do not tell us for instance, the bacterial and fungal load in their environment.

As an analogy on land, humans can be living in conditions surrounded by high levels of dangerous bacteria and moulds and yet there are no poisonous substances in the air. Living in these conditions can still be very hazardous to our health! The ammonia and nitrites can be considered as 'poisons' in 'air' for fish as this is essentially the medium for gasses they breathe. We know corydoras are less sensitive to short term nitrite and ammonia spikes because they have an alternative by gulping air from the surface and absorbing oxygen essentially through their gut.

When asking for advice on cory setups, do provide pictures of your setup, information of average temperature and pH and filtration. It will be helpful to provide you with better advice.

We do browse cory groups to help whenever we can, but better information will be useful!
