GROW WITH LOVE, COOK WITH JOY, EAT HEARTY!
It cannot get any better than having a constant supply of freshly harvested microgreens from kitchen counter top to your meals!

Now that you have probably master the skill of growing your own nutrient-rich microgreens (if you have not, it is ok, you will get there with a little more practice), one of the most commonly asked questions is how to use microgreens other than making salad with it. Although we highly recommend to consume microgreen raw for the best nutrient value, there are many ways to use microgreens, even in our familiar local cooking methods.

You will be amazed by how microgreens can elevate the presentation, flavours and sensations of your dishes. Each microgreen has their very own unique characteristic from the appearance to the taste profile that can turn into various dishes with different experiences.

We have compiled some of our favourite recipes into our FREE downloadable recipe book! Download our recipe book and start your exploration now!

Let’s use some of our senses to identify root hairs and mould:
👍Root hairs are white in colour | 👎Mould are normally brown, greyish, black or dotted black spots, sometimes dark green or blue
👍Root hairs have light and fuzzy structure | 👎Mould normally grow in all directions like a spiderweb
👍Root hairs appear around the roots in order to increase water absorption and nutrients uptake | 👎Mould grow everywhere above the growing medium or in between microgreens and it can spread when given the right conditions
👍Root hairs look healthy and not slimy | 👎Mould are usually wet, soft and slimy
👍Root hairs does not have smell | 👎Mould have musty offensive odour

The more you grow, the better you can identify Root hairs vs mould.

If you see root hairs in your microgreen tray, you are having a good germination. If you see mould, gently remove the mould area, spray some Hydrogen Peroxide 3% and place the tray of microgreen in area with good air circulation. In any case that the whole tray have been infected, treat it as a good learning experience, discard it and start again.

Don’t worry when you see these mould lookalike thing when you are growing your microgreens. These are healthy root hairs, an indication that you have a good germination! Commonly mistaken as mould, root hairs are not mould! They normally appear during the early stage of microgreen’s growth, they look white and fluffy, appears around the roots in order to increase the surface area of these new seedling to help with nutrient uptake and water absorption.

08/11/2021

There are many ways to use Hydrogen Peroxide 3% (H202) for growing microgreens:
1/ Soak seeds
Soaking seeds with hydrogen peroxide can speed up the germination and help seed to sprout easier by breaking down the seed’s coat and allowing them to better absorb oxygen. It also helps eliminate bacteria on new seeds without damaging the seeds.

Direction: Pour solution directly into a container to soak your seeds with Hydrogen Peroxide 3% for 10-30minutes, then rinse the seeds with clean water and sow the seeds immediately.

2/ Spray on mould area
The best uses of the solution is to fight undesirable pathogens (fungi / mould) formation in microgreens without damaging the crops. Hydrogen Peroxide also helps strengthen the crops’ development.

Direction: Spray directly on area with mould or root rot issues.

3/ Pour into water reservoir
Watering with hydrogen peroxide solution will introduce more oxygen into your growing medium and gives the roots more room to take in extra nutrients and water to get back on track. It is also a great option to treat root rot

Direction: Pour some hydrogen peroxide 3% into hydroponic reservoir (suggestion ratio 1 H2O2 : 10 water)

4/ Sanitise growing medium
Sanitising growing medium such as soil /coco peat / coco coir Hydrogen Peroxide is an easy way to stop disease caused by fungal or bacteria infiltrating your microgreens.

Direction: Spray directly on your growing medium (soil / coco peat / coco coir)

5/ Disinfect growing equipment and workspace
It is important to have a clean environment and equipment for microgreens to thrive and to reduce the risk of pathogens infection (bacteria / fungi / mould) that causes issues such as damping off.

Direction: Spray directly on your growing equipment (work space, microgreen tray and planter box). Let it sit for at least 10 minutes.

05/11/2021

A few drops of Chitosan can help to strengthen the immunity of your microgreen, leading to healthy growth. Chitosan is a naturally-occurring compounds that is commonly found in the shells of crustaceans which demonstrated antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and anti-pest properties to plants and microgreens. It also promotes the growth of rhizobacteria (a good root associated bacteria) to increase the germination rate and improves nutrient uptake. As chitin are present in insects and fungi, introducing chitosan to your plant starts to develop defences to protect against them like a vaccine to boost immunity.

The benefit of using Chitosan for microgreens:
1/ A super serum for crops to boast immunity
Chitosan enhance germination and accelerate growth by strengthening their immunity and increases its ability to better nutrient intake and resistant to stressful conditions.

2/ Prevent disease and unwanted pathogens infections (fungi / mould)
Also known as ‘plant vaccines’, it helps crops to build up immunity to protect itself from disease and fungal. The Chitosan molecule stimulates plant immunity against pathogen, strengthen the crops growth without harmful toxic. It also suppresses and reduces the spread of infections and bacteria.

3/ Improves yield and quality
Chitosan helps transform plant residues and traces of heavy metal elements into plant nutrients to promote a healthier growth. It is also a natural fertilizer due to its high concentration in nitrogen that will improve the yield and quality of microgreens.

You can grow microgreens as long as there is a growing medium that locks in moisture for the seeds to germinate. This method is great especially when you run out of soil or when your seeds are too small to sow it directly on the seedling trays to grow hydroponically! Although kitchen paper towel is commonly used as a growing medium, we would recommend using net such as gauze, laundry net, mosquito net as a better option. It definitely provides a better control in terms of moisture level as they are allowed to dry up quicker than kitchen paper towel if overwatering happens and they keep moisture and evenly distribute for a longer period of time compare to kitchen paper towel. Prepare these items to kick start growing ‘Small Seeds’ Microgreens hydroponically with net now!
These are the ‘Small Seeds’ microgreen seeds that can be grown hydroponically with net: Green lettuce, Romaine Lettuce, Alfalfa, Black Sesame, Rocket (Arugula), Clover, Red Amaranth and Green Amaranth.

💚EASY STEPS TO PREPARE COCO COIR💚
STEP 1: Check the moisture level
Check the state of coco coir with your hands before spreading them on the growing tray.

Too Wet!
Check: You are able to squeeze out excessive water easily.
Solution: Try to squeeze the water out of the coco coir, loosen to dry them up a little bit.

Too Dry!
Check: Flaky when you try to hold them.
Solution: Try to add some water and mix them well.

Good
Check: Coco coir is moist but there’s no extra water flowing out when you squeeze.

STEP 2: Spread coco coir & Mist
Loosen it up and evenly spread it out on growing tray. Lightly flatten but not over compact the coco coir.
Mist the coco coir with some water, this will help the seeds to secure its place.

STEP 3: Spread seeds & Mist
Spread seeds evenly and mist it with water again.

Some microgreens cannot be grown hydroponically, hence soil is the next best choice. However, microgreens that can be grown hydroponically, will thrive in soil too. While microgreens do not need nutrients in soil to grow, we recommend to use coco coir as the most effective and affordable way to grow microgreens. Other options such as potting soil, seedling soil or compost mixes are great too. Prepare these items to kick start growing ‘Small Seeds’ Microgreens with soil now!

Always make sure you mist the growing medium with right moisture level before you sow the microgreen seeds. It should not be too dry or too wet as either one would affect the germination and growth of microgreens. Let's look for the right moisture level when growing microgreens with Coco Coir.

18/10/2021

There are many soil options to grow microgreens effectively, generally you want something that has a good drainage without any large debris or chunks of wood. Our all-time favourite is using Coco Coir or Coco Coir based potting mix and here’s why:

AFFORDABLE AND VERSATILE
They are generally cheaper than soil. Though there are less nutrients in Coco Coir, microgreens grows perfectly without any because it gets all its nutrients they need to grow from the seeds itself as they are harvested at a young stage. Having less nutrients also means that you have full control by choosing or adding your own nutrients to boost the growth. Coco Coir can be used as a standalone medium to grow microgreens directly or it can be mixed with other types of soil or compost.

EASY AND SAFE FOR GROWING MICROGREENS
Coco Coir are made from the fiber of coconut husk, a by-product of coconut fruit. They are natural and 100% organic.

GOOD MOISTURE RETENTION AND DRAINAGE
Coco coir can absorbs, retains and distributes water quickly and effectively at the same time maintaining a good drainage and aeration. This also promotes a healthy germination and a strong root growth for microgreens as roots require both moisture and air to thrive.

NEUTRAL PH LEVEL
Coco Coir PH level is between 5.5 – 6.8, which is ideal for microgreens to grow healthily with the requirement of PH 6-7

ODOURLESS AND BACTERIA-FREE
It ideal for indoor growing as it does not create any foul smells. Less soil borne bacteria and disease.

ECO-FRIENDLY
Can be easily compost if you mix it with the right activator ingredients and composting materials

Coco Coir normally comes in a big block of compressed bricks and requires some preparation and process before using them. The good news is we have done the most time consuming and tedious labour work, our Coco Coir are ready-to-use. If you want to try soil as a growing medium, we highly recommend you to get one and try it out!

Plants generally grow better with soil. With a little bit more effort, you get a better yield and slightly higher quality microgreens. Some claims that growing with soil provides a better flavour, especially if compare it side by side. Also, growing with soil save you a little bit of time with less watering needed, as long as you keep the soil moist (but not soaked). Again, it is a personal preference to choose growing with soil or water, do try out both methods and stick to one that you prefer. Prepare these items to kick start growing ‘Big Seeds’ Microgreens with soil now!
These are the microgreen Seeds you can grow with this method: Microgreen Peas and Beans, Convolvulus (Kangkung), Sunflower, Wheatgrass and the different types of Radish, Swiss Chards (Red and Yellow Sunrise), Beet.

Let’s compare the Tiny but Mighty Microgreens vs their matured counterparts! Research shows that many microgreens are 4-6x higher in vitamins and antioxidants than the fully-grown plant. Microgreens also contain more Sulforaphane and Polyphenols than their mature counterparts. Sulforaphane and Polyphenols are known for its benefit of antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties that potentially offer some protection from certain disease, cancer, heart health and autism treatment.
They might be small, but they are so packed with nutrients!

11/10/2021

Most microgreens requires good light source to thrive, although some microgreens requires complete blackout during the whole growing journey. The amount of lights expose will very much depend on the microgreens that you are growing and your personal preference on taste and texture. Which lights to use can be complex and confusing, also depending on many factors such as budget, microgreens varieties or the amount that you are growing. Here are some of the lights options and its pros and cons that we listed out based on our experiences:

☀️Sunlight☀️🌱
We suggest to place your microgreens at a sunny window sill, which is sufficient for our Malaysia weather. Also, do ensure that they have a good ventilation and enough moisture.
Pros: This option is great for beginners as it is FREE! You get the full spectrum of lights from mother nature.
Cons: You cannot control whether the sun gets too hot or it might not work so well on rainy season. It might also take up too much space if you are growing in a large quantity.

💡LED lights💡🌱
A cheaper option compare to Grow light, we advise growers to grow with a white colour light spectrum of 6500k. It is fairly easy to find these lights in hardware shops. Place the lights 6-12 inches from the surface of microgreens.
Pros: Great option for growers who are ready to grow indoors in a vertical rack with an increase growing scale. You have full control to experiment on the timing and exposure of lights for different types of microgreen, not being affected by weather. We suggest to have at least 6hours of lights in a day to grow microgreens. Our personal preference is a 17hours on : 7 hours off.
Cons: Some investment are require to build up your grow area. Although LED does not use a lot of energy, there is still a cost on usage of electricity.

💡Grow lights💡🌱
Unlike the LED lights which main priority is to produce visible lights, grow lights focuses to promote growth. Grow light can come in full spectrum lights or in Red & Blue lights only. Full spectrum lights mimic the spectrum provided by the sun, while the Red & Blue lights only focuses on these 2 primary colours that’s needed to promote the growth of the crops.

Pros: Just like LED lights, grow lights speeds up the growth and lustfulness of the microgreens. Some says their microgreens taste better with Grow lights.
Cons: Similar to the LED, however the Grow Lights price can be 5x more expensive than the LED light.

💡Fluorescent Lights💡❌
We do not recommend fluorescent lights to grow microgreens as it is normally easy to break, contain mercury, uses more power to run and produces more radiant heat that will affect the growth of microgreens.
