Why the breed called Turkish Vans?
Personally, I have never fancied white cats myself, guilty as charged. But I decided to get to know afew different breeders of a few different breeds that I was interested in order to start my Cattery. I befriended some breeders abroad and locally. I followed their posts, chatted with many, then I found myself slowly attracted to the character of the Turkish Vans. They appeared very animated, very close to their owners, always wanting to take part in their owners lives. Well, then the story goes... I fell in love with this breed! So once you are in love, its a goner, coat color and other things matter little. It did take me a year or two after befriending the breeders to get my first very own Turkish Van in 2015. It was not an easy and straight forward path for me. As the breeders were not local, establishing relationships, trust, knowing which turkish van cat is of good profile and which is not. It took me quite awhile to observe, ask and look for information all through online and internet and learn.
Well, here we are today from since 2015 having a cattery of Turkish Van cats. We try and produce the best quality, good temperament of Turkish Van cats we possibly can, for pets, for breedings and shows.
Turkish van cats are an ancient breed of cat. It's history goes back to the mountainous region of eastern turkey (lake van region). The Turkish Vans are a very active type of cats and often require a large living areas. Vans make wonderful companions and pets and will always want to be involved with whatever you are doing. They tend to bond strongly to one or two people in a family. They remain active and playful well into old age. They are medium in size but sturdy and muscular. Vans have semi-long hair depending on weather and temperature, but always with a silky texture. The cat is white except for a colored tail and color on the head. This is called the "van pattern". They also come in solid white. Turkish vans are very lively, intelligent and independent. Many vans are fond of water. Owners of turkish vans must be careful of unsupervised access to water. They are well known for bathing toys in water, then flicking the water with their paws and playing in dripping faucets. Turks are often described as being dog-like in their behaviour, and in fact generally get on very well with dogs. They love human company too of course, and can be taught a few basic tricks like retrieving toys or paper balls. Unlike dogs though, they love being up high, and will climb on top of cabinets or kitchen units from where they can survey their territory. Theyβll also take great delight in relieving those cabinets or shelves of any ornaments or plants that inconvenience them, partly due to their slight clumsiness but often just for fun!
