Buaya boleh menahan nafas mereka dalam air untuk tempoh yang agak lama, tetapi kebiasaannya selama 2 jam. Namun, jika mereka tidak aktif dan berada dalam keadaan tenang, mereka boleh menahan nafas sehingga satu jam atau lebih.

Ini membolehkan mereka memburu atau mengelak daripada bahaya dengan berdiam diri dalam air untuk tempoh yang panjang.

Buaya perlu naik ke darat untuk bernafas walaupun sentiasa berada dalam air kerana buaya tidak mempunyai insang untuk bernafas di dalam air seperti ikan.
