I have recently changed the nest of my two queens Carebara ant colony, and have started to dig into the new substrate. I was thrilled to see them alive, and they both looked strong and healthy. This queen pair have created a dynasty, hatched many generation of workers, laid many broods and some of it got stuck onto their body while they dug. They took turn carving out the new nesting chamber, and eventually they will disappear into the substrate and will never be seen again. Well, that's until the next nest change. This carebara ant species is a challenge to keep, and over many years I have learned quite a bit about them. After many trials and errors later, I sort of got a hold on how to keep them within the confine of the nest. There are still things to learn about them and sometimes they always throw a curve ball at me.

This is a Carpenter ant from the species Camponotus parius. She is a special queen ant that I rescued. I found her by the side of the pavement I was walking on. This place was notorius for Asian Weaver ants to congregate and is a death trap for many insects performing their nuptial flights here. She was being held down by a small swarm of Asian weaver ants. I can tell that this just happened, as she was still mustering the strength to escape their graps on her back legs, but to no avail. I knew she would die if I didn't intervene; hence, I attempted to pick her up and try to help her escape. The bite force and sticky legs of the weaver ants were strong, and I had to pick them up while still biting on the queen ant legs. The aftermath left her with a few missing limbs, and I decided to give her a chance by bringing her home. She is a resilient queen and started to lay eggs even after her close-to-death experience. How awesome is that?!

Explosive Development My Tetraponera Rufonigra Ant Colony

This is my experimental Odontoponera denticulata colony. It has now been nine months since I put them in this nest. The last time I featured them was in the opening of the Terrarium video. Have a look if you haven't. They are doing extremely well in this setup, and I was actually quite surprised at how well they did being in a non-substrate nest. They are now 45 workers strong, and as you can see, we will be expecting more to be enclosed soon. I have since added a small outworld for them to roam in, as this nest has already gotten very packed since these broods have taken most of the nesting space. Just like many of you, I have doubts about this nest, but hey! Never try; never know. I love the top and unhindered view; you can practically see everything that they do. I want to conclude this experiment, and eventually, this colony will end up in a good household, which I think will be given proper care.

Although these are not your usual Pharoah ants, this species is nonetheless dangerous and widespread worldwide. They are Monomorium floricola, also known as little flower pot ants. They have a very short length of about 2 mm. A month ago, I found these queens on the pavement during a rainy evening. I was aware that they interbred in the vicinity of the nest to produce more queens for the colony. The size of the breeding males and the workers is the same. The queens spend most of the time in the nest; otherwise, they move about on the surface while they relocate to a new nest location. The Monomorium species can spread quickly into new areas and increase in population rapidly. As a result, other ant species that are already present in the area are mostly driven out. They are nuisances in your homes and infamous among the ant-keeping community as potential nest raiders and ant colony killers. Their food preferences is almost inapplicable to these ants because of their all-encompassing appetite.

This is a quick update on my two queen golden girls ant colony, the Polyrhachis Becarrii. A new worker has just been enclosed, and they are busy helping her clean up and get on her feet. I just noticed something very peculiar; in fact, I didn't think of it until recently. The workers are pulling on one of the queen's legs, and I believe her to be the new queen I introduced two months ago. You can watch that in the main video. When I introduced her, I wasn't sure if she was a fertile queen. And now, every time a new worker is enclosed, she will be pulled by her legs and sometimes her antennae, as though she is unwanted in the nest. I'm not sure why this is happening; my best guess is that they wanted the new worker to accept blessings only from her true egg-laying queen. After a while, it will all go back to normal. The rogue queen is left alone and allowed to mingle as though nothing had happened. Thank you for watching!
Carebara Marauder Ant Queen Shield!
This is my Carebara ant colony, also known as the Marauder Ants. I am changing out their nesting chamber substrate because it has started growing mould inside from all the food trash piled up. That black, moving pile of bunch-up ants is actually the queen of the colony, which I temporarily scooped from her dirty nest and placed in a holding container, which you see here, while I cleaned out her home as quickly as I could. What the ant workers are doing is actually protecting their queen by forming an ant shield, which consists of hundreds of workers constantly blanketing her. In the wild, they will form a protective shield to act as a deterrent from predators as they move their queen to a new home as food resources run out around them. Cleaning marauder ant nests is no easy feat, as there are still thousands of biting and stinging ants in the nest. On the other hand, I was so happy to have seen her again since I last saw her ages ago. I have to be quick with her nest cleaning and put her back immediately.

This species could be Myrmarachne, a spider. They are called Ant-mimic spiders. They have evolved over million of years to shape and behave like the ants they are living with. Either to prey on the ants or co-living which benefits each other. I would probably say feasting on ants spiders are more common. Notice how it uses the front legs as ant antenna to sniff around, so clever. Wonder what species is this spider mimicking?

Unknown Species
Hope somebody will identify this species for me, I have this pair of Queen captured around dusk, say 5pm-6pm. Someone ID as Polyrhachis Rastellata but I have that species so definitely not. It may not even be Polyrhachis species. Dimensions are 5-6mm excluding the wings. No spikes as far as i can tell. Slow moving queen, not zipping around. If it's up to my guess, I would say is a type of Dolichoderus Queen Ant.
Ants Subang Tip #07: - How to Remedy Parasitic Mites Invasion (PART 1)
Ants Subang TIP #07: - How to Remedy Parasitic Mites Invasion? (PART 1)
Problem: Having Parasitic Mites Invasion? Ants Dying from Parasitic Mites?
Solution: We all know this remedy but do you know the most effective way of doing it? ISOLATE and QUARANTINE the entire colony depending on the colony size will determine the quarantine container. The narrower container the better. Yes, it will be difficult if you have big colony but this is the only way. The mites will not go away if you are keeping your existing setup, they will still be there. We need to totally iradicate the mites not just on the body of the ants but to your nest setup as well. So, to do this the nest have to be thoroughly washed and clean. Welcome your disifected ants back home without fear of reoccurance.
For the ants part, there will be sacrifices, some ants, eggs or larvae may have to be abandon in the process. A small sacrifice for the better of the many. In the video the Queen has the most mites on her. It is difficult to watch. Cut few slices of lemon and prepare lemon juice so that you can drip it on the cotton and the ants shall remain there to clean themselves and you will see mites dropping off after a few minutes. This may take days or weeks. Another thing I forgot to mention is remember to rub lemon juices on the rim of the container. They can climb, incase of any escapies DO NOT do this remedy anywhere near your other ant colonies.
