Hot topic: blocked cat (cats with bladder stones/crystals that blocked urinary tract, causing difficulty in urinating). Male cats are more prone to this issue compared to female cats because their urinary tract are narrower and longer.

We just feel frustrated to see so many cats suffering with this issue, so we would like to raise awareness among pet owners, please avoid this!!

Symptoms: frequently squat inside litter box to p*e, but only little p*e came out, taking long time to p*e, sometimes vocalise during the process, bloody urine, poor appetite and inactive. This is an emergency issue, cat with complete blockage may die in 1 day.

Why is this happening? Mostly due to poor quality cat food that you are feeding to your cats. Food with unsuitable ingredients will cause formation of stones and crystals inside the urine and consequently block the urinary tract. Good brands that we never see causing urinary blockage in cats are: Royal Canin, Hills, Brits, N&D (farmina)... Yes these brands may cost higher compared to other brands, but feeding good quality food to your cat is a good health investment and may reduce a lot medical cost in future.

Dangerous Foreign Body Obstruction (FBO) in a dog

A dog is showing severe acute vomiting symptoms ( vomit up to 6-8 times per day), unable to eat any food. Foreign body obstructions must be ruled out if a dog is showing acute severe vomiting symptoms, treatment should not be delayed with gastric meds or anti-vomit meds. X ray or ultrasound must be taken to observe for the presence of foreign body inside gastrointestinal tract. When it is confirmed, surgery must be performed as soon as possible to save the animal, the longer the foreign body stuck, the higher the risk for intestinal perforation and sepsis.

A 9yo female shih tzu was brought to the clinic with complaints of bloody smelly urine. Upon ultrasound scanning, many stones were found inside the bladder. Surgery was conducted to remove the bladder stones, it reveals that there are a total of 21 struvite stones inside the small bladder. Spay was also conducted at the same time to prevent pyometra in future. After surgery, shih tzu can now p*e smoothly without pain and looks more active and happy. We wish all the best for shih tzu in future to live a happier and longer life ❤️ .

A male cat having a chronic non healing wound on his testicles came to us. This cat have been wearing e collar for 3 months, the wound unable to heal despite various medical treatments, it is very stressful for both owner and cat. We decided to perform scrotal ablation with castration, the surgical wound healed well within 1 week and the cat is now back to home happily without having to take medications daily or wear collar. This is a case where surgery is necessary to solve the issue.

Advice to all pet owners:

Your pet will get old one day, when they get old, you need to spend MORE TIME, MORE MONEY and MORE EFFORTS to take care of them, they will have chronic diseases that may need long term treatment. Please understand that this will eventually happen to all pet owners, please be prepared for that, please start saving money for their medical care every month / buy medical insurance for them, euthanasia just because you cannot provide them more care / money for medical treatment when they get old is unacceptable. 😭

Keeping a pet is totally different from raising a child, our child will grow up and eventually able to earn money and take care of themselves, but our pet will get old and totally depending on us to take care of them. Please think of their future, and start preparing for that.

Criterias for euthanasia:
1. Diseases that are not treatable and constantly causing pain even with treatment given.
2. Dog has serious illness until not eating and unable to move, treatment not helping.
3. Poor quality of life. Eg: paralysed and causing a lot bed sores.

So sorry that we have to reject many cases on last Thursday 1/8/24, this is because Dr Wendy went KL to join a huge spay and neuter activity (Potong Royong) organised by SPCA Selangor. This activity successfully neuter 500 cats and more than 150 dogs. We need to raise awareness on the importance of spay and neuter, we don't want to see more animals suffer on the street.
