Good day everyone

I have had a couple of people reaching out and asking what the lectures I am planning to present will entail exactly.

So, the idea of the course is to have lectures once a month, probably at the end of the month, most likely on a Friday because then a lot of farmers are in town in any case.

The lecture will be short (1-2hours) and we can start early, therefore the rest of the day will still be available for other business etc.

The idea is to start from the basics and work it up, so that by the end of the year each participant will hopefully have a comprehensive understanding of the overall health and management of a ruminant.

Thank you

Understanding Three Day Stiff Sickness (Bovine Ephemeral Fever (BEF)) in cattle

Three Day Stiff Sickness (3DSS) is a viral disease that causes temporary illness in cattle and water buffalo. According to veterinary researchers, BEF is found across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia (St. George, 2004).

What Are the Symptoms?

Cattle with BEF initially develop fever, muscle stiffness, drooling, and a loss of appetite (Uren & Walker, 1987). They are very reluctant to move and appear uncomfortable. Other symptoms may include a fast pulse, harsh breathing sounds, and nasal discharge. Fortunately, most cattle recover within 2-3 days, though weakness, weight loss, and abortion in pregnant cows can occur. Calves under 6 months old rarely develop symptoms.

How Does BEF Spread?

BEF virus is transmitted by small biting insects like midges and mosquitoes, most commonly near wetlands or marshy areas where these insects breed (St. George & Standfast, 2010). The virus cannot spread from cow to cow directly. Outbreaks often coincide with warm, moist weather patterns when insect activity increases.

How is 3DSS Diagnosed and Treated?

Diagnosis is mostly made on clinical signs. Sudden onset of muscle pain and weakness and rapid recovery after treatment. A blood test can also confirm the presence of the virus in the affected animals. Anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics for secondary infections, are the main aspects of 3DSS treatment. Supportive therapy like electrolytes, nutrients, and shade for dehydration and weakness are also important. Preventing insect bites can help control disease spread, but effectiveness has not been proven. Vaccinations are available, but effectiveness is variable.
In most cases, cattle recover from 3DSS within a few days with proper care. Knowing the signs, transmission patterns, and treatment guidelines regarding BEF can help cattle owners respond appropriately to this transient but impactful viral disease. Consult a veterinarian at the first signs of illness within a herd to confirm diagnosis and initiate supportive therapy.

Understanding Ehrlichia canis (Tick bite fever), a Tick-Borne Infection in Dogs

Ehrlichia canis is a type of bacteria that infects and sickens dogs. It is spread by the brown dog tick and causes an illness called canine monocytic ehrlichiosis or “CME” (1). Many dog owners have never heard of Ehrlichia canis, but it is important to be aware of this infection as it continues to pose a major health risk to dogs around the world.

How Dogs Get Infected

Dogs get infected through the bite of a brown dog tick carrying the Ehrlichia canis bacteria (2). Once a tick bites an infected animal, like a dog or even a wild canid, it can pick up the bacteria. Then that tick can spread it to the next dog it feeds on. In rare cases, a female dog can also pass the infection on to her puppies.

What Happens When a Dog is Infected

After a tick bite transmits the bacteria, the Ehrlichia infect some key cells in the dog’s bloodstream and body tissues. Inside these cells, the sneaky bacteria multiply rapidly without setting off the body’s alarm bells. Over weeks to months, the infection spreads, and dogs start to feel sick (3).

Signs Your Dog May Have an Ehrlichia Infection

Three to four weeks after a tick bite, an infected dog will usually spike a fever. Other common early signs are tiredness, poor appetite, swollen lymph nodes, bruising, and pale gums or eyes due to low platelet counts (4). Without treatment, the infection progresses bringing severe lethargy, bleeding disorders, eye damage, anemia, breathing issues and may eventually be fatal. Luckily, most cases are mild to moderate (5).

Diagnosis and Treatment

Veterinarians diagnose Ehrlichia through blood cell evaluations, lab tests and looking for the bacterial DNA. The good news is that the antibiotic doxycycline is highly effective in treating dogs with Ehrlichia canis (6). Dogs often start improving within 1-2 days once on medication. Seriously ill dogs may need supportive care like IV fluids while recovering.

Prevention is Key!

Currently, there are no vaccines for this tick-borne disease. Preventing tick bites and promptly finding/removing any attached ticks offers the best protection against Ehrlichia and other tick diseases for our beloved dogs. Talk to your veterinarian about safe and effective tick control products.
