𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲.💔

It is with an immense amount of sadness that we share the news that Burrito, after everything he had been through – including a blood transplant late yesterday evening and all the love and care we could offer – died. The whole ARK team, along with the vets who poured their hearts into him, are really affected by this.

As I write this, I can't help but think of the beautiful life Burrito could have lived. The simple joys – enjoying delicious food, being showered with love, curling up on the couch or in a warm bed. He would have expressed thanks every single day for the rest of his happy life. It hurts to know that he’ll never experience any of this, and it’s truly devastating. His spirit was so strong, but in the end, his body just couldn’t keep up with the neglect he had endured.

This loss has left a hole in all our hearts, and it’s a stark reminder of why we do what we do. It's why we ask you to adopt, not shop. Every single animal deserves a chance to live a happy, loving life. Burrito’s life may have been short, but we hope his story can inspire someone to change the life of another rescue in need. 𝗧𝗼𝗽 𝗧𝗶𝗽 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆: 𝟱 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝘂𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝟴 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝘀 𝗼𝗹𝗱. 🐾
Rehoming a puppy before it reaches 8 weeks of age can have significant impacts on their health and well-being. Here’s why it’s crucial for puppies to stay with their mother and siblings until at least 8 weeks old:

𝟭. 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Puppies undergo crucial socialisation and behavioural development between 6 to 8 weeks of age. During this period, they learn important skills such as bite inhibition, playing with littermates, and understanding canine communication. Removing a puppy too early can disrupt this learning process, potentially leading to behavioural issues later in life, such as fearfulness, aggression, or difficulty interacting with other dogs.

𝟮. 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆: Puppies rely on their mother's milk to receive crucial antibodies that help build their immune system. Separating a puppy from its mother and littermates too early can compromise its immunity, leaving it more susceptible to illnesses and infections. This is especially critical if the puppy hasn't completed its initial vaccinations, as it may not yet have sufficient protection against common diseases.

𝟯. 𝗡𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀: Puppies have specific nutritional requirements that are best met through their mother's milk initially and then through a balanced puppy food diet. Abruptly transitioning a puppy to solid food before it is developmentally ready can lead to digestive issues, malnutrition, or failure to thrive. Puppies learn eating behaviours and proper feeding manners by observing their mother and littermates, which helps establish healthy eating habits for life. Puppies begin the process of weaning from their mother's milk to solid food around 4 to 6 weeks of age. By staying with their mother and littermates until at least 8 weeks old, puppies have sufficient time to transition to solid food gradually. Abruptly separating a puppy before it has fully transitioned can lead to nutritional deficiencies, digestive upset, and reluctance to eat, impacting their growth and development.

𝟰. 𝗘𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Puppies form strong emotional bonds with their mother and littermates during the first weeks of life. These early relationships provide a sense of security, comfort, and emotional stability. Removing a puppy too early can result in separation anxiety, behavioral problems, or difficulties in forming bonds with humans. Puppies that stay with their litter until at least 8 weeks old tend to have better emotional stability and adaptability when transitioning to a new home. Being removed too early can result in many issues such as excessive barking, separation anxiety, and difficulty with house-training.

𝟱. 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:
Doing what is best for the puppy should be priority, and ensuring puppies stay with their siblings and mother until a minimum of 8 weeks old substantially reduces potential problems later on. Ensuring they have the best chance of growing up healthy and well-adjusted. Responsible breeders and animal welfare organisations should adhere to these guidelines to promote the well-being of puppies and maintain standards of care.

It may be ‘cute’, ‘adorable’ or ‘sweet’ to buy or adopt a tiny puppy, but you’re creating much more difficulty for both yourself and future pet. By waiting until puppies are at least 8 weeks old before rehoming them, we can give them the best start in life and ensure they grow up healthy, happy, and well-adjusted.

𝗪𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘂𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗼. 😢

The blood test results are in, and the Ehrlichia infection is so severe that our vet has never encountered a case this extreme before. At only 9 months old, Burrito has faced so much hardship, yet he’s fighting so hard to stay alive!

Thankfully, we had already started him on the necessary medication, but his condition remains critical.

We believe Burrito is suffering from a bleed on the brain as a result of tick bite fever, which is also causing an increased heart rate. We’ve managed to use an oxygen machine to assist him, and we are anxiously waiting for additional equipment to arrive from Windhoek in the next hour so we can do a blood transfusion.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻.

We really hope the blood transfusion will save Burrito. We are doing everything we can and praying Burrito pulls through this. We will keep fighting for him, as much as he allows us. 💔

𝗠𝗬𝗧𝗛 𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗗𝗔𝗬
In some traditional practices, there’s a belief that cutting off the tip of a dog’s ears when they’re sick can help restore their health. While this may come from a place of care and cultural tradition, it’s important to understand that these practices can cause harm to dog, and there are more compassionate ways to care for them.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗳𝘂𝗹
Cutting a dog’s ears can cause pain, infection, and long-term health problems. Our pets trust us to take care of them, and it’s our responsibility to choose methods that prioritize their well-being and safety.

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗪𝗘 𝗗𝗢 𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗗?
If you're concerned about your dog’s health but are working with limited resources, there are still many options available that don’t involve harm. Here are some low-cost or no-cost alternatives to ensure your dog stays healthy and happy:

✅ 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁 𝗮 𝘃𝗲𝘁
Many communities have low-cost veterinary clinics or nonprofit organizations that provide affordable care for pets. It’s worth looking into local animal shelters or veterinary services that offer free or sliding-scale payment options for people with financial challenges.
✅ 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲
Sometimes a dog’s illness can be treated with simple remedies. Ensure they have access to fresh water, nutritious food, and a comfortable place to rest. Regular grooming and maintaining their hygiene can also help prevent illnesses. If your dog is showing signs of illness, such as lethargy or loss of appetite, a trip to the vet is important, but you can also monitor their symptoms in the beginning and ensure they’re kept safe and hydrated.
✅ 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁
If a visit to the vet is not an immediate option, don’t hesitate to ask for help from family, friends, or community animal groups. There are many online resources and local pet owners who might be able to lend a hand or offer advice. Some charitable organisations even offer emergency vet care for those in need.

Our pets deserve the best care we can give them, and while tradition is valuable, it’s essential to balance it with modern understanding and compassion. Let's protect our dogs with kindness and ensure they live happy, healthy lives without unnecessary pain.

𝗨𝗥𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗧: 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲!‼️

We have decided to release information about Burrito only now due to the sensitivity of the case and because we desperately need your help!

Last week, while setting up trap cages to rescue stray kittens, we came across a horrendous case of neglect. Burrito, a 9-month-old puppy, was left to starve while extremely ill. We couldn’t allow this to continue. This poor soul has endured unimaginable cruelty, and we’re sharing his story now to ask for your urgent help.

Due to the severity of his condition and the extreme neglect he’s suffered, we cannot share most videos and photos of him. One thing is certain: Burrito will never return to his former owner. He is safe with us now, but his recovery journey is far from over. We are pleading for your support to help cover our extensive vet bills.

Over the past week, we’ve had rescue after rescue, nighttime vet emergencies, specialised tests, medications, and intensive care piling up. Right now, we have vet bills totaling over N$35,000, and we cannot continue to help animals like Burrito without your generosity.

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗼’𝘀 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝗼 𝗳𝗮𝗿:
🐶 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟭: (Tuesday): Burrito was rescued during the evening and brought to the ARK, where we immediately started caring for him.
🐶 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮: (Wednesday): We rushed him to the vet at 8 AM. He was placed on a drip and given medication to stabilise him. That evening, while handling another nighttime emergency that kept us at the vets until 10:15 PM, we returned to the ARK to find Burrito showing signs of seizures. From 10:30 PM to 1:30 AM, he endured multiple, severe seizures. It was absolutely heartbreaking, but with the help of our vet, we managed to eventually stabilise him. We honestly didn’t think he would make it through the night. This alone is a miracle.
🐶 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟯 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆: Burrito is unable to walk or use his back legs, and he is also incontinent. He requires 24-hour care and is spending his days at the vet and nights at the ARK, where we monitor him closely. We’re still waiting for test results and doing everything in our power to help him, but he has deteriorated since last night.

We want to give Burrito the chance he deserves. We don’t want to give up on him or take the easy way out by euthanising him. It’s hard work—I wake up every two hours throughout the night to check on him—just to give him every chance we can.

Despite everything, Burrito is the sweetest, most loving puppy you could ever meet. It’s hard to believe life has been so cruel to him at such a young age. All we want is for him to pull through and get the chance to live the happy, healthy life he deserves.

We’re so excited to share an amazing update about Fido, now called Archie, who recently found his forever home! ❤️

Archie’s new family fell in love with him the moment they saw his picture. After an easy adoption process—including forms, fees, and a house check—he made his way to his new home in Swakopmund with the help of a friendly taxi. Now, Archie is thriving as part of his new family!

TVT (Transmissible Venereal Tumour) is a significant concern for dogs in Namibia, particularly in areas with high stray populations and limited veterinary resources. This tumour spreads through mating and close contact among dogs, often manifesting as visible growths on genitalia. Treatment, though effective with chemotherapy, faces challenges due to resource constraints.

𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵: Cats in rural areas are safe because they don’t interact with other animals that carry diseases. ❌,

𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁: Even in rural areas, cats are at risk of contracting deadly diseases like rabies and feline distemper. These diseases don’t require frequent contact with other pets; they can spread through stray dogs, wild animals like jackals or mongooses, or even infected rodents and fleas. Vaccinating your cat is a simple way to protect them—and your family—from these dangers. ✅

Here’s why vaccines are vital, even in rural areas:

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗮𝘆. 💔

After rescuing Tailor from an Otjimbingwe spay day five months ago, we now have some incredibly sad news to share.

From the start, we knew Tailor had TVT, and after treating many cases at The ARK, we were hopeful for his future. Despite months of care and 11 rounds of chemotherapy, unfortunately, Tailor didn’t show the progress we were hoping for.

This is Tailor, enjoying his final walkies, and of course, we made sure to braai him a special steak for his last meal.

Though we couldn’t save him and saying goodbye was incredibly difficult, we hope this serves as a reminder of the importance of sterilising your pets to help prevent suffering like this.

Rest easy, sweet boy. You’ll forever have a place in our hearts. 🐾 ❤️

It can eventually lead to blindness if left untreated. Today Chloe underwent her second operation, the third eyelid flap technique. This procedure is Chloe's last chance at saving her eye. We will know in 10 days if the operation worked! 🙏 Despite enduring so much, Chloe's resilience shines through.
