Horseriding for Big and Small ...
uhla horseback namibia is a young activity provider set up by a culturally diversified and inspired team of horse- and nature-lovers. 'uhla' or formally 'U.H.L.A.' stands for Uzuva Hengari and Lohnert Andrea.
Charlie Brown very badly injured himself in some very ugly razor-wires quite some time back. While healing takes long, we try to make the process bit more bearable by bringing in one of ‘his’ three favourite mares to keep him company. On Tuesday, it was pretty AliHala. He immediately calms down 🧡🐴🧡
Always happy to meet up with the giraffes. But this young one was confident and curious enough to follow us a bit. That feels bit odd and horses don’t like it at all 😎
What do you do to forget about the seriously cool winter nights? Indulging in a sunbath on a warm sandy bed in the midday heat compensates for a lot 😎

It possibly could …. In another part of the world ☺️
But this year‘s ‚greening‘ came out exceptionally well due to the steady rain pattern over 3 long weeks. Most amazing is that these mountains and some part of the land have been black and nothing but rocky and black or sandy and black since the heavy veltfires late last year. Miracle Nature ….. 🌈

Here is an examples of nice plaiting and braiding - ideal pastime for indoors and especially if one still needs to train a bit before it looks perfect!
Amaretto - like most horses - does not really mind and does not care about the actual hair-do at all. But well, we like to give him and the other horses some extra attention and - let‘s be honest - we like to see them pretty 😎🐴🐴
After a week of blissful and steady rain, the grass starts sprouting everywhere. Even the paddocks feature a soft green cover …. Everything appears fresh and new 💦💦
Some horsewoman or horseman or (former) ponygirl or ponyboy 🙂 might recognize the monumental horseshoe standing fairly and squarely at the center of our 'playground'. A landmark close to the lodge, it might even bring back one or the other memory .... 🐴🏆🐴🏆

Not exactly amused to find best buddies Polo and Cupcake on a leisure walk in the stable building. But the two share one stable and when Polo realized that their gate was not properly locked …. well …. opportunities dont arise every day …. off they went ….. seemingly feeling cool while greeting their fellows 🐴🐴
On that beautiful Sunday with the Moolman’s, it took unusual long time to trace the giraffes; even difficult to discover wildebeests ! or kudus for that matter ....
Suddenly, it was midday. Looking at the horses’ shadows, the sun probably stood right above us before continuing South covering the last 16 days distance to the tropic of capricorn ….
It was predictable that C U R I O S I T Y would win ….
Despite recent fires and the December heat, Jacobus and loved ones (I) came out to Midgard to celebrate a very sweet and happy family event ‚bit differently‘.
It was the first occassion where we served champagne on an outride and the ice-bucket quickly sparked AliHala’s and Mulato’s interest. Needless to tell that the two ended up chewing ice cubes … Good thing was that our horseloving guests were equally fascinated by the scenery 😎 and that Mulato’s focus was off the tasty foods 🎂🍤🍧🍒🥐

What more could one wish for?
May be a camp-fire which we currently have to omit because of quite unpredictable winds increasing the risk of bushfires. But a million stars in the night skies are making up for this, too.

Meeting up with riders and horses under the mighty Ana Trees for a fine (lekker) braai is something out of the ordinary. And Isabel’s visit to Midgard together with partner and horse-riding friends surely warranted all extra efforts.
All non-riders were curious to hear what the group had experienced on the game view trail ride. But it is not seldom that the non-riders see plenty wildlife, too ... while blissfully waiting at the beautiful spot .... in any case, there is enough to share and talk about keeping everyone sitting around the ‘glamping’ dinner table till late ✨✨🌙✨
THE KISS (II)
We have taken more than 200 photos of Hazel and Bacardi. Remarkably, this picture is the only one where Bacardi has both eyes firmly closed. Just like Hazel. Intentionally. It's always astonishing how much horses reflect people's emotions. There is a lot of research in this regard and we found a very interesting article on this topic in the current HQ Magazine .....
Hazel had come out to Midgard with her close friends. She was looking for a nice PHOTO showing her together with a pony. We suggested several horses to her, but she opted for Bacardi, whom we thought was a bit too small for this particular set-up.
After all, it seems that she made a very good choice.
And by the way: Thank you Anja and Jakes for letting us have Bacardi and his buddy Rowen. They are two real sweethearts, well behaved and trained and bring us great joy.
2020 Tokyo Olympic Games presented some of the finest and amazing equestrian performances creating positive excitement and energy not only amongst professional riders. Here we see some beautiful stylish riders having been inspired to get on a horse again .... after kind of longer break 🙎♂️🙍♀️🙎♂️🙍♀️
But it was certainly up to CHRISTINE to make all the difference and put the cherry on the top during these Olympic Games. She thrilled and delighted the entire nation and many more around the globe with her world-class-performance grabbing SILVER for NAM. 🏆🏆🇸🇸🇸🇸 Thank you Christine and entire team for countless hours of hard training!

The warm wintersun does not only create the perfect light; it also presents most pleasant temperature conditions for riders and horses.

The TERRAIN surrounding the Midgard Lodge is quite diverse ….
Keeping the horses in a herd implies that they do address ‚small conflicts‘ directly ☺️. In order to contain potential injuries from these ‚arguments‘ to a minimum, they are not shoed. This again implies that we rather not go fast on the rocky mountainous routes. Naturally, the ponies love galloping a bit on sandy patches and trails 😊
The GIRAFFES are out in the open again ....
We are always happy to see the giraffes but it was rather difficult to detect or ‘meet up’ with them during the good rainy season. They preferred to explore the wide farmland or were hiding in between lush big trees with little need to visit popular waterholes .... The entire herd counts over 20 beauties with quite a few youngsters in between.
T H E S E V I E W S !
We all love gorgeous views. But there are certain spots, the horses are particularly interested in. Research says that horses can see and detect moving objects much further away than humans do. But whatever they see. it is less colourful; on top, horses can only see fairly sharp up to 10 meters within a certain limited 60 to 90 degree range of sight due to the positioning of their eyes. So may be, the ponies see their buddies strolling around in the paddocks in between beautiful big old trees - slightly blurred though - while we clearly see and enjoy the beauty of the scene altogether.
THIS IS NAMIBIA (II) 🇳🇦🇳🇦.. nearing end of April, it is still fairly green which is quite unusual especially after these many years of drought or below-average rainfalls. On top, the grass often stands around 1 m high .... and is very dense.
Strangely enough, this implies that we riders rather feel being observed by wildlife ourselves .... 😎
ENJOYING SPEED (II)... sometimes we indulge on going fast, too. Sandy riverbeds are ideal for quickly even going faster 🤩🤩
Nothing important to see here ... only our horses absorbed in lekker grazing ...😎
