Agriculture ministry appoints new Veterinary Council board members

The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform has officially appointed the new board members of the Veterinary Council of Namibia.

Deputy Minister Anna Shiweda from the Ministry of Agriculture presided over the inauguration, marking the fourth appointment of the Namibian Veterinary Council since the enactment of the Veterinary and Veterinary Para-professions Act of 2013.

The newly appointed board members of the Veterinary Council of Namibia are Dr Anna Marais, Suné de Klerk, Malaika Liesel Tyrid Loschke, Dr Paul Set, Dr Veronica Amunyela, Dr Alexandra Marko, Emmanuel Kamutyatsha Matheus and Dr Detlef Maggraff.

Shiweda emphasized the significance of the Namibian Veterinary Council as a regulatory body responsible for upholding standards within the veterinary and veterinary para-professions in Namibia.

“The regulation of these professions is necessary to ensure that the quality of veterinary care available to the public is of an acceptable standard, and that both veterinarians and para-professionals are suitably qualified and competent to perform their function within the scope of the profession in Namibia, whether it is in the area of veterinary care for companion animals, working towards food security by promoting production on commercial farms or protecting the public through food safety initiatives and addressing antimicrobial resistance,” she explained.

The deputy minister urged the members of the council to fully commit to their new roles, and to adhere to the veterinary law and maintenance standards.

“You have been elected by your peers to serve on the Namibian Veterinary Council, and with that selection comes a great responsibility, not only to your fellow colleagues who practice the professions of veterinarian and veterinary para-professional, but also to the people of the Republic of Namibia. Therefore, I wish to urge you to please be mindful of the oath that you take today, and make it the cornerstone of reason and deliberation when you execute your duties as Councillors,” she added.
