The Assumption is that City Feed or any other exotic feed you are buying contains essential vitamins and minerals for pig growth. Other factor depends on your pig breed.

Pig Nuggets!!!

Continues....It was hell as a farmer to manage the farm with low earning and the kind of orientation I had was more pigs more money in my pocket but I forgot to learn that it's plenty money from your pocket before they give you money back! You can have as much pigs if you have substantial amount in your bank to fund the farm and you will definitely get more than you expect if you know the nitty gritty of the business.

I was frustrated, pigs were lean, it's like the investments have done on it is not coming back and I also have a partner, my dad, I franchised part of the business to him with the hope that when he invest in it, we can grow some of the pigs to slaughter size. Every investor want returns as soon as possible but startups are not like that, it takes certain period to realize your returns. Investor back out o 😁! "I can't put money where I am not seeing returns" despite convincing, it didn't work! It can't work, that's the reality! we have pigs on ground but there is not enough fund to grow them to slaughter sizes. Pigs need good foods too, enough proteins and energy to grow but it's not coming cheap.
With many pigs on ground, I have to call people, come and pick some and pay me later, collecting the money is another story for the day, it's fight to collect some of the payments. At times, I send pig to my feed supplier then, he is connected and has a farm, he will do random estimation and give me feed to sustain the ones on ground. Mind you, I have one of the best breeds and some that have bought pigs from me can ascertain to that.

There is something you need to know about pigs, even if you have the best breeds from South Africa, Netherlands or imported from US, F1, Grand parent Artificial Insemination, if you don't give them the best feed, they will loose the features, the local hogs will be better than them.
I was about closing the farm, because I was not earning money from it but I keep spending and spending with no tangible returns. I called a slaughter to pick the grown pigs while I source for people to buy the piglets, I was like if I can't move forward, I should take back the little I can now before hunger takes back the little weight they have.

I got the contact through a platform, the man arrived from Delta State, and request I source others for him because he needed many tonnes. Myself and one guy, Chucks, started sourcing for pigs weighing not less than 50kg, we need about 5 tonnages. I cherish Igbo guys, they are very good with business, he has pigs to sell too but he is not closing his farm like me anyway. He asked me, what is the man offering us for this job, I was like, what? He is helping us to pick our pigs so it's a way to help him while we are helping ourselves. Then, pigs buyer around our side used to pick on credit, the grown up pigs you manage to groom, they still pick on credit! To collect money from them is another fight to finish, you have to trail them to slaughter house and they pay in part payments, some times, it takes a month to collect a full payment and some are still owning self till now. Then, we used to sell a kilogram of live weight pig between #320 to #350 Naira per kg. With the new buyer from Delta State, I have pushed to #400 per kg and he was ready to buy. I told my guy, this man is buying more than every slaughters around here and he is paying instantly. He said call the man, I wan to talk to him, he asked him, oga how much are you giving us on every kg we source for you other than from our farm, the buyer responded, I am helping you now, it's a way to show appreciation to me, my guy said no! we can't use our money to source for you and our time and you don't pay us for that, my business brain open too! I wasn't thinking about the cost of moving around and the time and energy we would exhaust to help him source for the pigs and you know farmers now which you are one too, you can't afford other farmers to cut from your profit considering the money and energy you invested to groom the pigs you rather refer the person to the customers. This is well said! Some farmers only need one boar and one or two sows. There are a lot to understand about pig farming, you need lot of money to make profit too, don't let anyone deceive you that it's more cheaper than poultry. To some extent, it may be true but not like you think. The only difference is that you can give pig alternative feeds unlike poultry which laying birds is the most lucrative, you can't give layer just any feed and nothing like food not available or we are managing feed like we do for pig.

Let me share a simple truth I have learnt in the course of running a pig farm.

I used to have have up to 6 sow, and a boar. A farrow from each of them will give me over 50 piglets, and I have just 5 rooms before I convert a passage at the back to a pen to keep weaners. There are seasons in piggery business too! there is a time other farmers rush to buy piglets to stock their farms and some incoming farmers buy piglets too to stock their farms. Sometime I will have up to 40 growers and another 50+ weaners from the sow because I plan two farrows for my sows yearly for sustainability and keep some to replace them as time goes by. Now, here is the reality, I have 6 grown-up sows and boar, 50+ weaners and growers that am looking forward to intending buyers. goosh! it's helk! With my low income earning and family to feed and I have to feed 90 piglets and 6 grown pigs with less than 70k earning couple with mandatory loans repayment, how do I manage that as a farmer? Feeding 6 grown-up pigs is like feeding additional 6 dependants and the boar is not helping, sometimes he breaks the door to mate another sow when your as a farmer is struggling to feed the piglets. It's not the boar's fault anyway, it's the farmer's responsibly to provide for food for them. To be continue..

*PRICE ADJUSTMENT*

Greetings to all Pig Farmers.

The harsh economic situation coupled with the removal of fuel subsidy is affecting every sector of our economy. The livestock sector is worst hit. While the cost of feeding is increasing astronomically, the purchasing power of consumers has being badly eroded resulting in some Farmers selling below operating costs.

To remain in business, it is important that we adjust our prices thus:

*Live weight N1,500 per kilo*
*Pork -- N2,700 per kilo*
*Weaners - N25,000 minimum*
*Growers shall be based on haggling*

The new price takes effect from Monday 28th August, 2023. On no account should any Piggery Farmer within Lagos and Ogun environ sell below the prices above.
