What is ventilation?
Adequate ventilation ensures bird comfort, bird health and welfare. The ventilation requirements of the broilers changes as it grows and with climatic conditions; ranging from providing a minimum amount of fresh air (regardless of outside temperature) in cold weather, to creating high air speed to keep birds comfortable during hot and/or humid conditions
PURPOSE OF VENTILATION
To maintain bird comfort
To provide fresh air
To exhaust moisture
To maintain air quality (remove odor and harmful gases)
To distribute heat and fresh air evenly
To regulate house temperature
To help maintain good litter quality
To control effective temperature of the bird
Ventilation management of open sided houses requires constant attention. Open-sided houses are vulnerable to high daytime temperatures and to outside colder air during the night time or when raining. The challenge is to keep the broiler chicks warm in the first 14 days of life and later, to provide appropriate ventilation by opening and closing sidewall curtains:
- When it gets warm, the curtains are open to allow outside air into a house
- When it gets cold, the curtains are closed to restrict direct exposure to cold air
Naturally ventilation can be either mechanically (circulation fans are used to help circulate and move air) or non-mechanically assisted.
When using fans, it should be oriented to blow down the long axis of the house and should either be placed in the center of the house if using single row or down each side of the house if using 2 rows.
