Rabies Awareness: Break the Chain.

Rabies is a deadly zoonotic disease caused by the Lyssavirus, primarily spread through animal bites, especially dogs. This neurological disorder inflames the brain (encephalitis), replicating in the central nervous system, leading to severe symptoms, organ failure, and eventual death.

(Note: Zoonotic disease is one that is transmitted from animals to humans.)

Transmission:

Rabies is not just transmitted through dog bites! Other means include:

1. Animal bites (dogs, cats, bats, raccoons, etc.).
2. Scratches or licks on open wounds.
3. Contact with infected animal's saliva, urine, or tissues.
4. Organ transplantation from an infected donor.
5. Laboratory exposure.

High-Risk Animals:

1. Dogs (99% of global rabies cases).
2. Bats (primary reservoir in Americas).
3. Raccoons.
4. Skunks.
5. Foxes.
6. Cats.

Low-Risk Animals:

1. Small rodents (mice, squirrels).
2. Lagomorphs (rabbits, hares).
3. Livestock (cattle, goats).

Key Facts:

1. Incubation period: 2-12 weeks (varies).
2. Virus replicates in central nervous system.
3. Almost always fatal if left untreated.

Call to Action:
- Vaccinate your pets.
- Report suspicious animal behaviour.
- Support rabies research.
- Educate friends and family.

Join the Fight Against Rabies!

Read, share, and spread awareness.
