MAINTENANCE, INSPECTION AND REVIEW.

Ensuring your premises’ fire extinguishers are within easy reach and clearly visible and identifiable in an emergency is important. Positioning of fire extinguishers is worked out based on the class of fire risk/fire extinguisher. The maximum distance a person should have to travel from the site of a fire to a fire extinguisher is as follows:

Class A: 30 metres

Class B: 10 metres

Class C: 30 metres

Class D: defined case by case

Class F: 10 metres

You are required to enlist the help of a competent person to check and maintain fire extinguishers twice a year in line with safety code of 2011. Regular inspections by a qualified technician ensure the equipment remains in working order and is fit for purpose. If a fire extinguisher has been damaged, accidentally discharged or vandalised, for example, a technician will assess it and take the appropriate course of action. Meanwhile, according to fire safety rule and fire safety code of 2011 recommends the responsible person visually inspects fire extinguishers at least once a month and, when circumstances require, more frequently. Fire extinguishers must never be used to prop open doors and their correct usage should be communicated to all users of the building..

Just how critical are fire extinguishers for society in general? Fire extinguishers are extremely important as they are the most commonly used for of fire protection. In many cases they are a first line of defense and often contain or extinguish a fire, preventing costly damage. These often overlooked devices can be a key component towards keeping you safe during a fire emergency situation. Business owners sometimes view fire extinguishers as red cans simply hanging on the wall, and expense to managing their business. But these red cans serve a very useful purpose. The fact remains that in more than 600 businesses and non-residential structures, fire extinguishers are the difference between a minor fire problem and destruction.

HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS
A COMPREHENSIVE RESOURCE

The holidays are best enjoyed at home, not in the hopistal. Brush up on the do's and don'ts of holiday safety with this statistically driven guide of holiday safety tips.

COMMON HOLIDAY HAZARDS

✔ Watch out for your kids. Kids get excited, especially concerning a new place, new people, or new experiences. Many locations aren’t as childproof as your own home.

🔸If you’re travelling or you’re a guest, you’ll have to be alert for potentially dangerous food, drinks, household items, toys, tools, choking hazards, etc.
🔸Don’t wait to clean up after a party. Kids or pets could get to hazardous alcohol, food, or decorations before you do.
🔸Poinsettias are poisonous to man and beast; keep them far from children and pets.

📌Be alert for fire hazards. Most residential fires occur during winter, and it’s easier to get careless when you’re caught up in good company.
🔸Never leave sources of fire or heat unattended.
🔸Never use charcoal or gasoline-fuelled devices indoors.
📌Step aside for professionals and experts.
🔸Leave the fireworks to the professionals.
🔸Leave the grilling to the veteran barbequers of the family.

📌 If you’re decorating,
🔸Assemble, clean, and inspect the location and all of your tools and equipment first.
🔸Never block exits.
🔸Never use damaged accessories, cords, lighting sources, etc.
🔸Never overload on electrical outlets or cables.
🔸Ensure your holiday lights aren’t damaged (frayed, aged, cracked, etc.)
🔸All outdoor electronics should be plugged into GFI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlets for extra protection.
🔸Always opt for non-flammable material (whether for Christmas trees, Halloween or Carnival costumers, Easter decorations, etc.).
🔸Never leave fire or heat sources unattended.

SEASONAL SAFETY

☑Dress and behave according to the season. Stay warm in cold temperatures, and cool down in hot environments.

☑Prepare and guard yourself according to the activity.
Whether you’re swimming or snowboarding, trick-or-treating or hunting for chocolate eggs, and running the risk of hypothermia or sunburn or drowning or firework explosions… be sure you know the basic rules and safety precautions for whatever you do.

☑Check and prepare the fireplace before using it.
Never burn wrapping paper, which could cause flash fires.
Keep all decorations and flammable objects at least a few feet away.
Always use a sturdy and large metal screen.

👉Candle Fires Are Rampant During HolidaysChristmas, Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Day are the top 3 days of the year for candle fires.

👉Children At High Risk for Electrical AccidentsAccording to the CPSC, 70% of child-related electrical accidents occur at home, when adult supervision is present.

👉Winter is Fire SeasonThe number of children injured or killed in home fires more than doubles during the winter months.

Action Items
✔Always practice extra safety precautions in an unknown setting.
✔As always, but especially in an unfamiliar setting, protect your family’s wellbeing as well as your own.
✔Dress according to the season and the activity.
✔Keep your hands and your kitchen spotless.
Plan ahead to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday.
✔Share travel plans only with a select (trustworthy!) few.

SAFE TRAVELS

✅Plan ahead. Know where you’re going and how you’re going to get there. Download the latest GPS data or obtain a new map. Check for construction detours, and consult the weatherman.

✅Let a trusted person know where you are and leave them an itinerary and your contact info.

✅Never inform strangers of your travel plans
✅Create the illusion that somebody’s always home (see Home Safety Tips for more security tips and ideas)

✅If you’re driving, keep these holiday safety tips in mind:
🔹Never drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or distractions.
🔹Buckle up—yourself and your family; use the car-seat for small children.
🔹If possible, travel by day. Quite simply, it’s safer. If you’re worried about traffic congestion, get a very early start or avoid the hours when most folks drive to and from work.
🔹Keep a breakdown kit (spare tires, jumper cables, fuses, flares, flashlights, blankets, etc.).
✔If you’re flying or using public transportation…
🔹Travel with a buddy (or a few); there is safety in numbers. 🔹 travel with a trusted source. The airline or bus or train company (as well as any middleman company being used) should be familiar and trusted.
✔Don’t carry too much cash or valuables on your person; don’t look like an expensive target.

A VERY HEALTHY HOLIDAY

✔Avoid smoking and second-hand smoke. ✔It’s a good time for your regular check-up and vaccinations. We typically interact with more people during holidays, increases our chances of catching infections along with those hugs.
✔Always practice your good judgement. That happens when you’re sober, and not under the influence of anything else.

✔Drink responsibly.

✔Stay active, and get regular exercise.

✔De-stress! You already know stress isn’t healthy. Here’s a few tips to fight it off:

🔹Make time to sleep and eat properly
🔹Drinking plenty of water
🔹Enjoying the people and living in the moment
🔹Pre-plan as much as possible; whatever you can do today, don’t leave off for the "big day"
🔹Have a lot of back-up plans

🔹Make time for

🔹Settle on a positive attitude no matter what goes awry

HEARTY AND HARMLESS HOLIDAY FOOD

✔Wash your hands often. You come into contact with plenty of people, and you’re handling unusual things (it’s not every day you’re setting up the Christmas tree).
✔Avoid cross-contamination; separate raw food from cooked food.

✔Cook at the proper temperature.

✔Thoroughly wash raw food (fruits and vegetables). Having a food safety training is one easy way on learning the proper food handling especially if you're in the food service industry.

✔Refrigerate leftovers promptly. Don’t leave perishable food out for more than a couple of hours.

✔Thaw meat in the fridge, not the counter.

✔Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, and limit sugary and alcoholic and fatty food intake.

✔Stuff with care. If you’re stuffing a turkey or any other meat, prepare the stuffing and then insert it immediately and loosely. Whether it’s cooked inside or outside the main meat, be sure to cook it to at least 165 degrees F.

06/03/2021

A self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), sometimes referred to as a compressed air breathing apparatus (CABA) or simply breathing apparatus (BA), is a device worn to provide breathable air in an atmosphere that is immediately dangerous to life or health. They are typically used in firefighting and industry. The term self-contained means that the SCBA is not dependent on a remote supply of breathing gas (e.g., through a long hose). If designed for use under water, it is also known as a scuba set (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus). When not used underwater, they are sometimes called industrial breathing sets. Unofficial names include air pack, air tank or simply pack, which are mostly used in firefighting.

As we are in d season of fire I advice us to be more conscious and more careful because we are in d season of fire...Our holiday traditions can increase the risk of home fire. So will advice us to learn how to stay safe while you celebrate.

Holiday Fire Safety Tips

1.Holiday Fire Safety Tips:No holiday celebration would be complete without a feast, but be sure to take precautions against kitchen fires when you’re cooking and baking. That includes keeping children and flammable items such as grocery bags and kitchen towels away from the stove and oven. Clean up greasy spills as you go to remove another fire hazard. If you’re deep frying a turkey, keep the fryer well away from structures and trees, make sure your turkey is fully thawed, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your fryer. Make sure u made avaliable suitable fire extinguisher for ur kitchen and fire blankets and it never to late to learn how to make use of them effectively.

2.Christmas Trees:Old fashioned Christmas celebrations featured wax candles on live tree branches – inside homes! Today we know better, but risks still remain. If your family prefers real trees, be sure to water yours every day because dry needles and wood catch fire more easily. Go ahead and use many strings of light, but don’t plug more than 3 strings into each other (opt for a power strip instead). Discard light strings that are worn or broken. And be sure to always unplug the lights before leaving the house or going to sleep.

3.Fireworks:We usually talk about firework safety for the Fourth of July, but many New Year celebrations also include fireworks. If you’ll be setting off fireworks at home, choose a location away from buildings and trees. Be sure your spectators, including children and pets, stay well back. Keep a supply of water or fire extinguisher at hand. If you live in an area that’s experiencing a drought, consider cancelling the show this year – a stray spark that lands on dry grass or leaves can lead to a wildfire...

Wish us fire free celebration...as I use to say fire is our when handle it well but if do not handle it wit care it bcos our enemy...it wont work against us thanks...

Prevent Your Child from Starting Fires

Research have estimates that 300 people are killed and #280 million in property is destroyed each year as the result of children playing with fire.

Keep matches, lighters and other ignitable substances in a secured location out of your child’s reach. Only use lighters with child-resistant features.

Invest in flameless candles. These candles contain a light bulb rather than an open flame, and take the danger out of your child knocking over a candle.

24/07/2019

A home fire is a devastating event, and one that you never count on happening. Your children are most at risk when this disaster occurs. In fact, children under five are twice as likely as other people to die in a home fire. Tragically, many home fires are started by children playing with dangerous household items – especially lighters and matches. Taking sensible precautions in the home and teaching your child how to escape from a fire can help your family avoid this type of heartbreak.

EMPLOYEE ALARM SYSTEMS

Alarm System Purpose

The purpose of the employee alarm system is to reduce the severity of workplace accidents and injuries by ensuring that alarm systems operate properly and procedures are in place to alert employees to workplace emergencies.

OSHA Standard

OSHA's employee alarm systems standard 29 CFR 1910.165 applies to all employers who use an alarm system to satisfy any OSHA standard that requires employers to provide an early warning for emergency action, or reaction time for employees to safely escape the work place, the immediate work area, or both.

12/07/2019

EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN

Written plan which an organization is required to have and which must be displayed at every job site with a certain number of employees (usually ten). It should detail step-by-step procedures to follow in emergencies such as fire, chemical spill, or a major accident. An emergency action plan also includes information such as whom to notify, who should do what, and location of emergency stocks.

11/07/2019

The purpose of the fire prevention plan is to prevent a fire from occurring in a workplace. It describes the fuel sources (hazardous or other materials) on site that could initiate or contribute both to the spread of a fire, as well as the building systems, such as fixed fire extinguishing systems and alarm systems, in place to control the ignition or spread of a fire.

Fire Safety/Fire Drills - Supervisor Briefing

Supervisors and employees must have knowledge about fire prevention and procedures in order to avoid confusion in the event of a fire. Workplace fire safety training should be completed by employees within the first few days of employment. Without the training, employees will not know how to act or what to do should a fire break out while they are at work. Confusion during an emergency situation such as a fire can lead to chaos, multiple injuries and very possibly fatalities.
This Supervisor Briefing covers the following:

Fire Prevention Plans

Emergency Action Plans

Employee Alarm Systems

Fire Brigades

Use of Portable Fire Extinguishers

Identification of Fire Hazards

Resolution of Potential Fire Hazards

Fire Drills

Fire Safety Training

Portable Fire Extinguishers

The majority of portable fire extinguishers located throughout every building consists of multi-purpose, dry chemical extinguishers that will be effective on any type of fire you may encounter:

Ordinary combustibles, such as paper, cardboard, cloth and wood

Energized electrical equipment

Flammable liquids (except for flammable metals)

If you discover a fire, you must immediately set off the building fire alarm system by activating a manual fire alarm pull station to warn building occupants.

Only attempt to extinguish the fire if it is very small, not more than 2 feet high. Keep your escape route behind you. Should you decide to try to extinguish the fire, use the following acronym to help you:

P. A. S. S.
o Pull safety pin from handle.
o Aim at base of fire.
o Squeeze the trigger handle.
o Sweep from side to side.
If you decide not to fight the fire, try to close the door to the fire area, if it is safe to do so. This will help to prevent heat, smoke and toxic gases from entering the egress corridors. Then evacuate the building via the closest exit.
A periodic check of the extinguishers should be performed to ensure:

The extinguisher is not being used inappropriately, (for example, to prop a door open)

The extinguisher pressure gauge needle is in the green zone

There are no visible indications that the extinguisher has been damaged, discharged, or removed from its proper location

That the inspection tag is attached to the fire extinguisher. The inspection tag must be stamped with a month and year indicating the extinguisher was inspected within the past twelve months.

If an extinguisher needs to be replaced, submit a Work Order to Facilities.

HAZARDOUS ELECTRICS &
APPLIANCES

Be a smart shopper. Buy electrical products evaluated by the nationally recognized laboratory (i.e. UL).

Be sure to check the label as products often contain their own set of fire safety tips and warnings.

Replace all frayed wires: worn, old, or damaged appliance cords belong in the dumpster and not shoved under the rug.

Use three-prong plugs in three-slot outlets, and two-slot plug into two-slot outlets. Make sure your kids know this, too.

Portable space heaters heaters must be kept four feet or more away from combustible surfaces and objects.

Ensure that your heater has a thermostat control mechanism (so it automatically switches off if it falls over!).

Never overheat it, and always use it in a well-ventilated room.

If it's a kerosene heater, clear K-1 kerosene should be the only thing you're feeding it.
