My friend Hector is a beautiful boy with both elbows badly affected by developmental elbow disease. His family came to see me all the way from Wales to see what their options were to relieve his severe pain. He had worn away the cartilage on the insides of both elbows such that they were bone-on-bone. I have described how this happens in my stories if you’re interested.

I performed two sliding humeral osteotomies (SHO) surgeries and injected regenerative stem cells for both elbows. SHO is an advanced procedure that is currently offered in only a few veterinary hospitals worldwide. I was part of the development team years ago, have performed hundreds of these procedures over the years, and published widely on the procedure. It involves cutting the humerus (upper arm bone) and fixing it in a new position using a special stepped bone plate and screws. This transfers weight away from the diseased inner part of the elbow to the healthier outer part.

I used a custom made implant unique for Hector that I designed with my engineering team at Fitzbionics. We are the only practice in the world equipped to offer this particular option. I hope this proedure will give Hector a new lease of life.

This boy is very special to his family and to all of us and we wish him a speedy recovery. I’ll give you a further update when both elbows are healed x

“My lovely Fia came into my life in 2020. She is from Healing Paws charity in Zante and originally came to a family in London when she was five months old. They decided they didn’t want her and so she went into foster for a while and then I picked her up in July after I had been vetted (over Zoom as it was Covid).

From day one she was a complete bundle of fun and never stopped zoomies and loved life to the full. I took her to classes every week for recall and lead walking etc .Fia was mostly very good and came back 99% of the time but one day that all changed….

In October 2022 I was walking by the river in Weybridge with a friend and Fia suddenly ran up the bank after a squirrel and that was it. She was hit by a car. We just heard the brakes and a scream then it all went quiet. I completely froze but my friend rushed up and was fantastic! She stopped the man in the car who had hit Fia to find a blanket or coat in his car to pick Fia up with and then we bundled her in his car and he drove to a vet nearby.

Fia had clearly been hit on the back of her head as her eyes were displaced and she was absolutely petrified. It was the most horrific time. The vets sedated her and then we had to drive her to a specialist vet where they stitched her eyes back in her head – she also had a fractured skull. She was in hospital for two days and then she came home – very stressful time for both of us.

We had to learn together how to navigate things now her sight was so damaged – I have learned not to move anything! The only commands I use are “up” “down” and “careful” she seems to know what each command means and rarely bumps into things anymore! She even goes to day care still once a week.

It was extremely hard and I never thought she would ever be the same again but she has proved me wrong on all accounts! She has mastered the house, the garden, my daughter’s house and garden and various pubs! The only thing she isn’t keen on is walking on her own with me.

I love her to bits and she is such a clever girl. Blind dogs can have very happy lives!”

Sounds like you had quite the ordeal Frances, but together you have held on tight and make a fantastic team. Through the hardest times the best bonds shine through. Thank you for sharing your story. N x

“We rescued Bowie in September 2016 when he was about 2 years old from Terrier Rescue. Our dog Duke had passed away 10 days earlier and we just couldn’t cope without a rescue dog in our lives.

Bowie more than filled the huge paw-shaped hole in our hearts and for the last six years, he has brought us such joy! He adores walks along the beach, and holidays in Devon and Cornwall and especially loves doggy ice creams!

He’s such a little character and always suddenly stops on every walk for exactly six treats before he trots off again to explore the beach and clifftop!

He was an absolute rock last summer when my Dad suddenly passed away and looking back I’m not sure how I would have gotten through those months without him…Thank goodness for little Bowie”

Thank you for sharing your heartwarming story Michelle, you can feel the amount of love there from your words and the unquestionable bond of trust and understanding. Way to go Bowie. N x
