ACHIEVING UNIFORMITY IN BROILER PRODUCTION 🐔🐓🐔🐤🕊️🐓🐔
Everyone

Are you having challenge if broiler un-uniformity in your farm🤔🤔🤔
Have ever wondered why your broilers are not having uniform sizes❓❓❓
I will tell you one reason. SPACE ‼️‼️‼️
As a broiler farmer, providing the right space for your birds is crucial for their health, growth, and overall productivity. Overcrowding can lead to stress, increased competition for food and water, and even diseases and therefore leads to varied sizes.

For optimal growth, it's recommended to provide about 1 square foot of space per bird during the first few weeks and increase it to 1.5-2 square feet as they grow. This ensures they have enough room to move freely, access feed, and avoid piling on each other, which can cause suffocation and heat stress.

By prioritizing proper spacing, you're not just creating a comfortable environment for your broilers, but you're also boosting their performance and your overall productivity!

MANAGEMENT OF NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCIES IN FISH

Aquaculture is an essential sector in global food security. As fish farming evolved, the incidence of nutritional disease has increased. This is because of the intensive system of production where the fish has limited choice of food selection and must depend on the food provided by the farmer. Nutritional diseases in fish arise primarily from deficiencies, imbalances or excesses of certain nutrients in the diets. Nutritional deficiencies not only affect fish health but also impact growth rate and overall productivity of the aquaculture. It is important that farmers should know the causes of common nutritional diseases of fish. This write up tried to explore the causes, clinical signs and management of nutritional diseases in catfish.

*CAUSES OF NUTRITIONAL DISEASES IN FISH*

All living organisms including fish require a balanced diet. They need protein, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals in the right proportions. The absence of imbalance of any of these nutrients leads to a varieties of nutritional diseases. Notable causes include:

1. DEFICIENCY IN PROTEIN AND AMINO ACIDS: protein and essential amino acids are required for growth and tissue repairs. A lack in this nutrient can result in poor growth, muscle degeneration and immune-suppression.

2. FATTY ACID IMBALANCE: Essential fatty acids such as omega 3 and omega 6 are crucial in membrane integrity and normal physiologic function. Deficiency can cause poor growth, fin erosion, and weakened immune system.

3. VITAMIN DEFICIENCY: Vitamin is essential for many physiologic functions. Common vitamin deficiencies include:

a. Vit C Deficiency: It causes scoliosis, reduced collagen formation and weakened immune responses

b. Vit E Deficiency: Causes muscle degeneration, reproductive failure, and increased susceptibility to infections.

c. Vit B complex deficiency: causes neurological issues, reduced feed intake and poor growth.

4. Mineral Deficiency: Minerals like calcium, phosphorous and iron for bone formation, osmo-regulation, oxygen transport. Deficiency can lead to skeletal deformities, anemia and poor growth.

5. Overfeeding or underfeeding: overfeeding can cause fat accumulation in organs, leading to fatty liver disease while underfeeding results in malnutrition and stunted growth.

*COMMON SYMPTOMS*

1. Stunted growth especially juvenile fish

2. Skeletal deformities due to deficiencies in vitamins, minerals often result in spinal curvature or gill abnormality

3. Muscle degeneration due to protein deficiency

5. Reproductive issues

*MANAGEMENT OF NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCY*

Treatment of nutritional deficiency in fish revolves around correcting the imbalance in the nutrition. Notable approach includes:
1. Adjustment of the food to contain optimum levels of the required nutrients

2. Supplementation: Products like NUTRI-AMINO which contain high level of concentrated amino acids will help in correcting any protein deficiency that may exist in the feed.
Another good product that will be of immense benefits to fish farmers is NUTRISTRESS. This is a highly concentrated vitamins and minerals which will effectively correct any deficiency that may exist in the feed. It is important to know that the longer the feed is stored, the more the vitamin and mineral content of the feed is depleted. To avoid such depletion, supplementation with NUTRISTRESS will be of vital help.

*CONCLUSION*

Feeding constitute 80-90% of cost of production in fish farming. Any farm that is able to reduce the cost of feed is in profitable business. But in a bid to reduce cost of feed, farmer’s inadvertently cause nutritional deficiency in their fish. The cost can be far higher than providing balanced diets. NUTRI-AMINO and NUTRISTRESS is another magic supplements that will revolutionize your fish farm and place you in profitable footing. NUTRI-AMINO and NUTRISTRESS are very common drugs that you can easily get from any nearby Vet shops and Vet pharmacy.

Profitable Poultry farming

Poultry farming, particularly broiler production, is facing significant challenges in Nigeria as the cost of feed and other inputs continue to rise. Many farmers are finding it increasingly difficult to remain profitable. However, by implementing effective strategies, poultry farmers can minimize production costs and maximize profits, even in this challenging environment. Here are key ways to achieve this:

1. Minimize Feed Wastage

Reduction in feed wastage is of paramount important. Poultry farmers should as a matter of fact cut down on any form of feed wastage. It is important to know the exact quantity of feed a chicken needs pay day. Avoid over feeding as much as possible, you are not only going to reduce cost of feed but you are also avoiding incidents of sudden death syndrome.
Use feeders according to the size of your chickens. If you use small feeders to feed order birds, there will be greater losses than when you use feeders that matches their size and age.

2. Formulate Your Own Feed.

Compound your own feed if you can. This will help you to know the content of what you are feeding your birds and how you can manipulate it to achieve your target. Most commercial feed producers in a bead to cut prices will reduce the protein content so that the feed will be a little bit affordable. As a farmer who depends on them, you are at the receiving end of such activity. You may not know that there's a reduction in protein content because the feed looks the same. You can't determine the nutritional content by physical appearance of feed.

Producing your own feed will also help you to cut cost. Studies has shown that you can save up to 400 Naira per bag if you are formulating your feed. You can multiple 400 by number of bags your chicken feeds in a day and by 1 month. You will understand how much you will be saving.
It's always good to seek for advice from experts before formulation to avoid unnecessary mistakes.

3. Use Supplements to Enhance Growth

Use of supplements. Broiler farmer's main aim is to increase weight at the lowest cost possible. You can achieve this my increasing the protein content of your feed. But increasing the protein content means increasing the feed cost. But you can still increase the protein content not necessarily from feed but through water medication. Protein when digested gives amino acid which the birds uses to grow. There are amino acid products that has been prepared which when giving in water will be assimilated immediately and utilised by your chicken. Such product will drastically increase your protein content and reduce your cost of production.

One of the best in the market is . The amino acid is very concentrated and from a trusted company, Nutrivet in Holland. If you buy it and use, you can always be sure of bountiful harvest in the next 35 to 40 days.

4. Prioritize Management and Biosecurity

Effective management is crucial in reducing costs. Implement strict biosecurity measures to prevent diseases, as prevention is far more cost-effective than treatment. This includes maintaining a clean environment, controlling access to the poultry house, and using antibiotics prophylactically where necessary.
Early detection and treatment of illnesses are vital. Keeping your flock healthy will minimize the need for costly treatments and prevent losses due to mortality. Use quality veterinary drugs to prevent had I know. Go for quality instead of price because if you do otherwise, you will eventually spend more without much result.

5. Maintain Accurate Data Management

Tracking performance metrics such as feed conversion ratios (FCR) is essential. FCR measures how efficiently your birds convert feed into body mass. Regularly monitoring these ratios (at least every two weeks) allows you to make informed decisions about feed and management adjustments. Without this data, you risk making costly errors based on guesswork.

6. Seek Expert Guidance

All these steps are something you can do in your own but in case you can't, it is always good to see for advice. We are available for any assistance at anytime. Your success is what keeps us going and we will be happy to assist in anyway.

Conclusion

Implementing these strategies will not only help sustain your business but also increase overall profitability.

*BEAK TRIMMING*
By Dr.wageti
*Adamore Nig Ltd sole importer of Kepro products*

This means removal of part of the lower and upper beak of the birds. It is commonly known to Chicken but also applies to Turkey and quails. Sometimes it's inaccurately referred to as Debeaking, this seems wrong since it's only part of the beak that's removed.
In chicken, beak trimming can be done at Day old, 6 weeks or advisable at not later than 12
weeks. Reason being, at this stage the reaction to stress is too low, blood loss is minimal and
birds can easily regain normal oral activities. The later the trimming the more stressful the
operation.
Beak trimming is done to reduce the impact of cannibalism, reduce egg eating and feather
pecking.
When trimming, extra care Must be taken to avoid more or less of it both of which have strong effects to the over all performance of the flock. If done incorrectly, it might reduce birds ability to eat/drink, short and/or long term stress, re****ed growth all of which can cause reduction in production.
NB *Please consult your vet/technical person for a better operation.*
As a matter of birds welfare, the operation sounds cruel but this cruelty is outweighed by vices that birds exhibit if not trimmed. *It's therefore recommended that triminmg should be done by experienced personnel to avoid compromising birds welfare, maintain the health of the birds and avoid effects on production.*

Beak trimming is done
using:

*HOT BLADE TRIMMING*
Here beaks are cut with electrically heated blades (cherry-red colour) and pieces removed immediately. The blade cuts and cauterize the trimmed surface immediately thus avoiding blood losses.
This method is more affordable and accessible especially on contract basis and also in most farms though needs an experienced personnel to perform. The system is relatively faster, efficient and adjustable.

*INFRARED TRIMMING*
In this system beak tissues are subjected to non-contact high intensity infrared sources. The beak surfaces remain intact for the first few days but slowly erodes later. This method is more efficient and fast although not affordable especially to medium-size farmers. Also in case of re-trimming, you will still need the hot blade method.
Its is the most recommended method in modern day farming but sophisticated and quite expensive to install.
*
COLD BLADE TRIMMING (scissors and knives).*
Here beaks are physically cut with sharp knives and/or scissors. It is the cheapest method of trimming. *This system is so rudimentary, time consuming and jeopardises birds welfare. There are risks of uncontrolled fatal blood losses. Its disregarded except where unavoidable.*

*Alternatively* .
Genetics is being modified to come up with species that are less aggressive with low cannibalistic tendencies as an alternative to beak trimming.

*GUIDELINE DURING BEAK TRIMMING*
● Reduce the amount of light in the poultry house(dim white light is recommended) such that birds do not see one another clearly. It can help to reduce aggressiveness. *Talk to your vet for appropriate light regulations as excessively low light has effects on eyes.*
● Give electrolysed vitamin supplements like *VITAMINOTRACE ORAL/POWERVIT/ADAMINOLYTE* to birds pre and post trimming to combat the effects of stress. Vitamin k is a must.
● Ensure balanced diet. Provide adequate calcium, manganese, Zinc, copper, cobalt (these are found in premixes so watch out for the type you are using), amino acids (more so methionine) phosphorus. Talk to your nutritionist for advice.
● Trim beaks only when birds are in normal conditions. *Don't trim sick birds*
● Trim ⅔ of the upper beak and at least ⅓ of the lower beak. *Poor trimming will cause long and short term effects to the birds.*
● Early trimming help birds regain their normal oral behaviours earlier.
● *Please increase the feeds in the feeders for at least the first 10 hours post-trimming for birds to get used.*
● Avail fresh clean drinking water in the house when trimming. It helps birds to lower temperatures in the body facilitating coagulation.
● Please ensure correct stocking density to avoid overcrowded flocks. This will also help in reducing effects of cannibalism and pecking.
● Avoid beak trimming during hottest part of the day.

Thank you

The Attraction, Subtlety, and Danger of Quackery

Patronizing a quack is like swimming in an ocean with sharks--- Dr Tunji Nasir
A good man regardeth the life of his beast--- Proverbs 10:12

Quackery is a terminology commonly used in medical and other allied professions.
Sharp practices carried out by quacks is seen in all discipline of life.

Quacks that encroach on the veterinary and poultry practice sector seems to be having a field day and smooth ride.

Veterinary quacks are individuals who are not trained or qualified and hence not licensed by the law to treat animals, prescribe and distribute restricted drugs.

Quacks impersonate the identity of trained and qualified veterinary doctors.
They camouflage as persons who are skilful in the art of disease diagnosis.

The emergence and persistence of quackery in the animal health industry can be attributed to several factors:

! Desperate for survival as a result of economic hardship.

!! The paucity of trained animal health professionals. There seems to be a shortage of qualified personnel to meet the teeming demand for health services.

!!! Negligence and lack of dedication on the part of veterinarians, making clients or animal owners turn to quacks who feign as dedicated professionals.

!!!! Unwittingly training of laymen as auxiliary staff who practice unmonitored.

!!!!! Greediness for quick gain, as many believe that the vet profession is lucrative.

!!!!!! Quacks are perceived to be more affordable.

Discerning quacks may be a trait not at everyone disposal.
Since they endanger the future of the livestock and Pet industry, it is of immense good to be able to identify quacks.
It has been said that by their fruits, you shall know them.

Quacks are bold despite incompetence.
They manipulate clients and livestock owners for selfish intentions, having nothing to lose.
Impersonators offer quick fixes to complex problems. They are simplistic in their approach.

Professional pretenders claim to possess instant solutions.
They offer 'magical' remedies to every problem.
Many quacks do not leave records because they do not want to be traced or for want of knowledge as to how to write clinical reports.

Quacks undermine professionals before clients.
I have met untrained people who claim to know ten times more than any veterinarian, yet they make obvious blunders in simple situations.

Most quacks do not have a traceable office, hence they will most often offer home services, (this is not intended to undermine ambulatory services).
Quacks take one idea and apply it to all kinds of diseases without reference to their origin.
Some administer one remedy for all possible diseases.

Dear farmer and livestock owner, patronising quacks put your investment at risk.
Quacks make the wrong diagnosis and make you spend your hard-earned money on a 'placebo'.

The next time someone offers to give your animal any form of health services, it may be a great idea to demand his license.

I intend that this post do not offend anyone, rather it should help make our society saner.
