Variations in the dog's spine.

Because the spine is covered by muscle, tendon, tissue, dermis, undercoat and outer coat, it is hard to fully appreciate what a curvature to the spine itself actually looks like.

Put another way, these are examples of spinal curvature in German Shepherd show dogs drawn in conjunction with my late friend Linda Shaw, which for many people, maybe most, would be considered to be impossible, a gross exaggeration, but it's not!

Top to bottom;

Curvature of the thoracolumbar spine, aka the back
Downward lumbar spine bend.
Normal/Straight back

Whilst a straight back provides the optimum transfer of energy from the rear to the forehand, flexion is a very important function of the canine back. This is critical to the dog's gait in many other areas, such as galloping; a straight back provides superior flexion to a curved and or bent one, and at the gallop, thanks to the muscles attached to the lumbar spine, back flex can add 50% the dog's power and stride..
