Fault 9: German Shepherd Dogs with proven “severe hip dysplasia”

What is Hip Dysplasia?

Hip dysplasia is a common skeletal condition that occurs during the growth stage in dogs. It results in the loosening of the hip joint, which causes dysfunction and pain.

GSD Fault 8: Dogs with jaw deficiencies: Overshot by 2 mm and more, undershot,
level bite in the entire incisor region

According to the breed standard; “The German Shepherd Dog has a scissor bite, i.e. the incisors must interlock like scissors, whereby the incisors of the up- per jaw overlap those of the lower jaw. Occlusal over- lay, overbite and retrusive occlusion as well as larger spaces between the teeth (gaps) are faulty.”

GSD Fault 7: Monorchid or cryptorchid dogs as well as dogs with clearly dissimilar or atrophied testicles

— Monorchid Dog: A dog with only one testicle.

— Cryptorchid Dog: There are two cases of Cryptorchid here;

1. Unilateral Cryptorchid: Just one testicle is in the sc***um—the other one can be found in the abdomen.

2. Bilateral Cryptorchid: None of the testicle dropped into the sc***um. — two of them may be found in the abdomen.

German Shepherd Dogs with the above conditions—including dissimilar or atrophied testicles are not allowed in Shows.

MONORCHID, CRYPTORCHID, DISSIMILAR OR ATROPHIED TESTICLES ARE ELIMINATING FAULTS.

GSD Fault 6: Dogs with weak character and weak nerves which bite

According to the German Shepherd Dog Breed Standard;

“The German Shepherd Dog MUST be well-balanced (with strong nerves) in terms of character, self-assu-red, absolutely natural and (except for a stimulated situation) good-natured as well as attentive and wil- ling to please.

He must possess instinctive behaviour, resilience and self-assurance in order to be suitable as a companion, guard, protection, service and herding dog.” —These are the virtues of a sheep/shepherd dog.

In judging or evaluating the German Shepherd Dog, the first point given to a GSD by a judge is usually around the appearance — which includes the nerve and character— of the German Shepherd Dog.

Now, if a German Shepherd Dog lacks strong character and nerves, then it is not worthy to be called a SHEEP/SHEPHERD DOG.

GSD Fault 3: Dogs with oversize or undersize by more than 1 cm

There’s nothing like BIG GSD. — The German Shepherd Dog Breed is a medium-sized dog breed. Not a medium-large or a large dog breed.

Standard Height;

- Male dogs: Height at the withers: 60 cm to 65 cm

- Female dogs: Height at the withers: 55 cm to 60 cm

For male GSDs: Anything more than 66cm for the male is an eliminating fault and anything less than 59cm is an eliminating fault

For the female: Anything more than 61cm is an eliminating fault and anything less than 54cm is an eliminating.

GSDs with height higher or lower than the standard height but not more than 1cm may be overlooked, but those higher or less than 1cm will not be tolerated.

Fault 2: Long Straight Topcoat without undercoat

The German Shepherd Dog is a versatile dog breed. — To make this possible, the undercoat is a MUST-HAVE as it is an important feature in making the German Shepherd Dog function properly under any type of weather condition.

It can help them stay warm in cold temperatures, prevents sunburn, provides them with an additional insulation etc.

Lack of it is an ELIMINATING FAULT
