Fault 9: German Shepherd Dogs with proven “severe hip dysplasia”

What is Hip Dysplasia?

Hip dysplasia is a common skeletal condition that occurs during the growth stage in dogs. It results in the loosening of the hip joint, which causes dysfunction and pain.

Hip Dysplasia is an ELIMINATING FAULT

GSD Fault 8: Dogs with jaw deficiencies: Overshot by 2 mm and more, undershot,
level bite in the entire incisor region

According to the breed standard; “The German Shepherd Dog has a scissor bite, i.e. the incisors must interlock like scissors, whereby the incisors of the up- per jaw overlap those of the lower jaw. Occlusal over- lay, overbite and retrusive occlusion as well as larger spaces between the teeth (gaps) are faulty.”

GSD Fault 7: Monorchid or cryptorchid dogs as well as dogs with clearly dissimilar or atrophied testicles

— Monorchid Dog: A dog with only one testicle.

— Cryptorchid Dog: There are two cases of Cryptorchid here;

1. Unilateral Cryptorchid: Just one testicle is in the sc***um—the other one can be found in the abdomen.

2. Bilateral Cryptorchid: None of the testicle dropped into the sc***um. — two of them may be found in the abdomen.

German Shepherd Dogs with the above conditions—including dissimilar or atrophied testicles are not allowed in Shows.

MONORCHID, CRYPTORCHID, DISSIMILAR OR ATROPHIED TESTICLES ARE ELIMINATING FAULTS.

GSD Fault 6: Dogs with weak character and weak nerves which bite

According to the German Shepherd Dog Breed Standard;

“The German Shepherd Dog MUST be well-balanced (with strong nerves) in terms of character, self-assu-red, absolutely natural and (except for a stimulated situation) good-natured as well as attentive and wil- ling to please.

He must possess instinctive behaviour, resilience and self-assurance in order to be suitable as a companion, guard, protection, service and herding dog.” —These are the virtues of a sheep/shepherd dog.

In judging or evaluating the German Shepherd Dog, the first point given to a GSD by a judge is usually around the appearance — which includes the nerve and character— of the German Shepherd Dog.

Now, if a German Shepherd Dog lacks strong character and nerves, then it is not worthy to be called a SHEEP/SHEPHERD DOG.

GSD Fault 3: Dogs with oversize or undersize by more than 1 cm

There’s nothing like BIG GSD. — The German Shepherd Dog Breed is a medium-sized dog breed. Not a medium-large or a large dog breed.

Standard Height;

- Male dogs: Height at the withers: 60 cm to 65 cm

- Female dogs: Height at the withers: 55 cm to 60 cm

For male GSDs: Anything more than 66cm for the male is an eliminating fault and anything less than 59cm is an eliminating fault

For the female: Anything more than 61cm is an eliminating fault and anything less than 54cm is an eliminating.

GSDs with height higher or lower than the standard height but not more than 1cm may be overlooked, but those higher or less than 1cm will not be tolerated.

Fault 2: Long Straight Topcoat without undercoat

The German Shepherd Dog is a versatile dog breed. — To make this possible, the undercoat is a MUST-HAVE as it is an important feature in making the German Shepherd Dog function properly under any type of weather condition.

It can help them stay warm in cold temperatures, prevents sunburn, provides them with an additional insulation etc.

Lack of it is an ELIMINATING FAULT

Formation

The versatility of the German Shepherd dog was him in the two world wars undoing. Already in the First World War were 30,000 German shepherd dogs at the front in the use of which many thousands of victims of the war. In the second world war in the world were already some 200,000 German Shepherds war effort. All eligible dogs were examined (sample shot) and when fed suitable for military service. Most died or were there by the victors taken away. After the war, so hardly even good dogs were present. The special feature is now in the division of Germany after the war by the victorious powers.

Each part of Germany began a separate breed from the remaining stocks to build. Whereas in the West continues to grown according to the typical beauty ideal (black and yellow, falling back), were asked in the East especially dark dogs with good service dog characteristics. This evolved into more than 40 years separate populations of the same race. The old DDR lines represent the ostblütigen type as he is under the special breeding community (SZG) was developed in the GDR.

After the reunification of Germany took over the Western Association (SV) and the leadership had no interest in the "Osthund" to obtain or reinzuzüchten with targeted, an association was not an issue. The whole was more like a takeover, and soon in the new states were almost exclusively Western sheepdogs were used to find and very many West German stud dog. Many Eastern breeders have stopped after the fall to breed, mixed together with East or West rose all around to West German lines. This was reflected in the high-levels with a marked deterioration. In addition, the number of "DDR dogs" in a short time greatly reduced, so that hardly a sufficient breeding stock was available.

Meanwhile, pure-blooded East German Shepherds are drawn become quite rare. Currently these are high quality dogs again in demand. Many sportsmen and farmers mourn their votes for dogs. Dogs from Eastern Line are used in selective breeding to improve the building and coloring as well as in the breeding performance because of their high Triebig and the gray color. Another advantage is the better health. The remaining back just makes itself felt and the strict selection of GDR times. From 1979, was bred exclusively with HD free dogs.

Properties and characteristics

The main difference between the dogs of DDR and West German beauty line breeding is the back course. East German dogs from breeding have a normal shape, straight back. This makes them less susceptible to hip disease (HD) and elbow dysplasia (ED). East German Shepherd dogs in the four decades of isolation to compact specimens with good bone, large heads and dark, most developed of the original overlaid with gray coat color. In GDR times it came to breeding dogs with good use of scientific selection. They are more robust as a real working dogs and there is no fad. Of course they do not look so beautiful and elegant as West German dogs from breeding.

Every dog is different and therefore generalizations are always difficult. Dogs from East Linen, but are generally not turned on yet quick to anger. They usually have a balanced character with plenty of drive. Most "DDR'ler" have a strong self-confidence and even as a puppy afraid of anything. Often they look at all interested in peace and then go easy on new things. Eastern shepherd dogs in the house quiet, cuddly and inconspicuous. Outside action is called for, they like to romp and run around.

These dogs are especially suited for dog sports, are good to use as working dogs and can be used as a guard, protect and rescue dogs. It is "Easterners" a little more demanding in training than many Western dogs. This is due to the fact that they are quite independent and think along. Secondly, they question quite well again and then it will already know. You are ambitious and have a firm, of its own.'s Why they need a straightforward consequence management and continuous.

Osthunde are all quite late maturing, and you have to have patience with them. Not only the body needs time, the character is formed only from late final. So also the question of power are made much later than normal and some owners wondering, where is the age of puberty is actually left. If it begins to test a male about 3 years, of course, is also more emphasis on it than with the usual approximately 1 1 / 2 years.
Dogs from GDR-line are also very nice family dog. You need to be close to their people and want to be there everywhere. There are essentially strong, beautiful and healthy dogs with a lot of charisma.

GSD TOPLINE VS GSD BACK(STRAIGHT BACK AND SLANT BACK).

Knowing the right term to use has been an issue amongst many German Shepherd dog owners and breeders.

I see people request for “slant back GSDs” and some “Straight back GSDs.” Whenever they’re in need of one.

Before we proceed, if you know you love the GSD breed, make sure you join the German Shepherd Dog Foundation of Nigeria(Rivers Chapter)

In today’s post, we shall carefully look at these words.— TOPLINE and BACK.

- What exactly is the topline of a German shepherd dog and where can it be found?

- What about the Back of a GSD? Where is the back located?

- Do we really have Straight back and Slant back German shepherd dogs?

Read on to find out;

First, let us go through their definitions.

WHAT IS THE TOPLINE OF A GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG?

You can go with any of the four(4) definitions below;

1. The line formed from the back of the skull, over the neck, withers back, loins, croup and tail. The top of the dog.

2. The part of the dog extending from the rear of the withers to the tailset

3. The outline from the withers to the croup

4. The base of the neck to the base of the tail

Top lines can be;

- Arched

- Straight/leveled

- Roached

- Sloppy(we have quite a few breed with this kind of topline —the GSD is one of them)— Many call the slightly sloppy Topline of the GSD, SLANT BACK. Guess what? They are wrong!!

- Concave, etc.

WHAT ABOUT THE BACK?

The back of not just the GSD, but any dog breed is a short section of the topline that starts approximately at the last rib and extends forward for about five ribs. It is designated in two parts - thoracic and lumbar.

So, the BACK is an area along the TOPLINE.

The GSD should have a STRAIGHT BACK, not a SLANT BACK or STRAIGHT TOPLINE.

THERE IS NOTHING LIKE A SLANT BACK WHEN IT COMES TO THE GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG.

So, when next you see someone looking for a German shepherd dog to buy, but is using the the wrong term, make sure you correct them.🦾🦾

PLEASE, KINDLY GO THROUGH THE PICTURES TO GET A BETTER VIEW.👍🏿
