HOW TO GET THE BEST DOG FOR YOURSELF

1. Research About the Dog Breed: Understand the origin of the breed of dog. Understand why they were bred, their characteristics and needs.

2. Search for a Reputable Breeder: If you’ve settled for a particular dog breed, look out reputable breeders on your area, state or country who are into that breed of dog. Ensure that these breeders prioritize the breed standard, health and welfare of the dogs.

3. Go Meet them In-Person: Always meet the seller in person to see the dog's living conditions and assess its well-being. And if you can’t communicate with them.—calls or video calls would be good and if you have someone around that area that can check on the dog, that’ll be fine, too!

4. Look out for Health Records: Request and review the dog's health records, including vaccinations and any medical history of the dog.

5. Make Sure You Ask Questions: Inquire about the dog's pedigree, behavior, parents behavior, etc.—including any special needs.

6. Meet the Parents of your dog: If possible, meet the dog's parents to get an idea of their temperament.

7. Verify the Identity of the Seller before making payments

8. Visit a Veterinarian: Pay a visit to the vet as soon you acquire the dog to ensure its health.

9. Join a Breed Club and Register Your Dog

Remember, responsible dog owners prioritizes the well-being of the dog and discourages supporting unethical breeding practices or online pet scams and scammers.

HOW TO KNOW A PUREBRED GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG

As a German Shepherd Dog lover or owner, it is essential to know whether your dog is a purebred or a mixed breed. Purebred German Shepherd Dogs have a distinct set of characteristics that differentiate them from other breeds, and it is crucial to be able to identify these characteristics to ensure that what you is truly a German Shepherd Dog.

Most of us can’t spot a purebred German shepherd dog or the processes that are to be taken identify a purebred German Shepherd Dog. Many tend to mistake anything that looks like the “German Shepherd Dog” they see on television or google as a purebred. The truth is, there’s more to just resemblance and co.

Here are some tips on how to know if your German Shepherd Dog is a purebred:

1. Check for the breed standard:

This is like the Bible or Koran of the German Shepherd Dog breed. It outlines not only the physical characteristics(how the dog should look), but also the temperament of the breed.

Go through the German Shepherd Dog breed standard and check if your dog matches the breed standard.

2. Look at your dog’s pedigree:

Every purebred dog should have records showing how it was produced. The pedigree helps us to trace our dog’s lineage back several generations.

If you’re getting a GSD from a breed who claims that the dog is anpurebred GSD, ask for the pedigree papers to know the dog's lineage.

Check the pedigree of your dog is one of the most reliable ways to know if your dog is purebred or not.

3. Observe the dog's behavior:

This one can may not always be accurate, but it is can also serve as a very good pointer. German Shepherds are known to have distinct personality traits. — Remember that the GSD was bred to work. They are also known to be loyal, protective, intelligent, and have a strong desire to please their owners.

So, observe your GSD to know if they possess or exhibit any of these behavior/characteristics.

4. DNA testing:

DNA testing is another way to determine a dog's breed.

If you are not sure if your German Shepherd Dog is purebred, you can have a DNA test done. This will give you a definitive answer on whether your German Shepherd is a purebred or not.

In conclusion, identifying whether your dog is a purebred German Shepherd Dog is essential. It comes with a lot of benefits.

Following the above tips will help you in knowing whether your dog is a purebred German Shepherd Dog or not.

GOOD DOGS ARE NOT CHEAP!!

Do not be deceived, it is difficult to find a purebred/pedigree German Shepherd Dog for anything less than 250k or 200k.

However, there are circumstances where a breeder or dog owner may face issues(family, health, etc.) and sell their puppies or dogs for a significantly lower price, even half of what they initially got it.

There is also a possibility of a breeder selling at a ridiculously cheap price with certain terms and conditions attached.

We cannot ignore the possibility that the "very cheap purebred/pedigree" you are purchasing at a significantly low price may have some significant issues. Hence, the low price serves as a warning sign, as sometimes the sellers may not disclose these problems.

Your relationship with the breeder can lead to you getting some significant cut too.

It is important to note that purchasing a cheap 'purebred/pedigree' dog online from unfamiliar breeders, marketers, etc., often priced at 40k, 80k, 100k, 150k, or 200k, may result in scams, fraudulent transactions, regrets, etc.
Such dogs may have serious underlying issues too.—You never can tell 🤷🏿‍♂️🤷🏿‍♂️

I always tell people this, buying a dog is only the first step, maintaining and caring for the dog requires time, effort, and financial resources.

If you are able to do one and unable to do the other, then you’re still not ready.

You can consider saving up or exploring partnership or co-ownership arrangements.

Acquiring and taking care of a good breeding stock involves lots of investments.—This is why it is not cheap.

Therefore, I’ll advise you to avoid looking for cheap dogs for your own good and the right process/way to avoid future regrets, headaches and heartbreaks.

Calm down and make proper research when next you want to get a dog.

Never go for an aggressive dog. An aggressive dog can harm you or any member of your family at anytime. — They may not even protect you when the time comes.—they may run away sef.—funny but very possible. —forget about the show they put most times.

Instead of going for an aggressive dog, look out for dogs with good guard instincts.

Basic Breeding Principles.

20 Principles of Breeding Better Dogs
by
Raymond H. Oppenheimer.

1. Remember that the animals you select for breeding today will have an impact on the breed for many years to come. Keep that thought firmly in mind when you choose breeding stock.
2. You can choose only two individuals per generation. Choose only the best, because you will have to wait for another generation to improve what you start with. Breed only if you expect the progeny to be better than both parents.

3. You cannot expect statistical predictions to hold true in a small number of animals (as in one litter of puppies). Statistics only apply to large populations.

4. A pedigree is a tool to help you learn the good and bad attributes that your dog is likely to exhibit or reproduce. A pedigree is only as good as the dog it represents.

5. Breed for a total dog, not just one or two characteristics. Don't follow fads in your breed, because they are usually meant to emphasize one or two features of the dog at the expense of the soundness and function of the whole.

6. Quality does not mean quantity. Quality is produced by careful study, having a good mental picture of what you are trying to achieve, having patience to wait until the right breeding stock is available and to evaluate what you have already produced, and above all, having a breeding plan that is at least three generations ahead of the breeding you do today.

7. Remember that skeletal defects are the most difficult to change.

8. Don't bother with a good dog that cannot produce well. Enjoy him (or her) for the beauty that he represents but don't use him in a breeding program.

9. Use out-crosses very sparingly. For each desirable characteristic you acquire, you will get many bad traits that you will have to eliminate in succeeding generations.

10. Inbreeding is a valuable tool, being the fastest method to set good characteristics and type. It brings to light hidden traits that need to be eliminated from the breed.

11. Breeding does not "create" anything. What you get is what was there to begin with. It may have been hidden for many generations, but it was there.

12. Discard the old cliché about the littermate of that great producer being just as good to breed to. Littermates seldom have the same genetic make-up.

13. Be honest with yourself. There are no perfect dogs (or bi***es) nor are there perfect producers. You cannot do a competent job of breeding if you cannot recognize the faults and virtues of the dogs you plan to breed.

14. Hereditary traits are inherited equally from both parents. Do not expect to solve all of your problems in one generation.

15. If the worst puppy in your last litter is no better than the worst puppy in your first litter, you are not making progress. Your last litter should be your last litter.

16. If the best puppy in your last litter is no better than the best puppy in your first litter, you are not making progress. Your last litter should be your last litter.

17. Do not choose a breeding animal by either the best or the worst that he (or she) has produced. Evaluate the total get by the attributes of the majority.

18. Keep in mind that quality is a combination of soundness and function. It is not merely the lack of faults, but the positive presence of virtues. It is the whole dog that counts.

19. Don't allow personal feelings to influence your choice of breeding stock. The right dog for your breeding program is the right dog, whoever owns it. Don't ever decry a good dog; they are too rare and wonderful to be demeaned by pettiness.

20. Don't be satisfied with anything but the best. The second best is never good enough.
