The heat period in dogs

The heat period also known as estrus or the mating cycle, typically lasts about 2-3 weeks. It occurs approximately every 6-12 months, depending on the breed and individual dog. During this time, female dogs are receptive to mating and may exhibit behavioral changes such as increased friendliness, restlessness, and marking.

How to identify the heat period of dog

There are several signs that can indicate that a female dog is in heat:

1. Swelling and discharge: The v***a may swell and become more prominent. Additionally, some dogs may have a bloody or straw-colored discharge.

2. Changes in behavior: Female dogs in heat may become restless or anxious.

3. Flagging: When approached by a male dog, a female in heat may "flag," meaning she will raise her tail to the side to expose her ge***al area.

4. Increased urination: Female dogs in heat may urinate more frequently and may urinate in various locations to leave their scent.

5. Male attention: Male dogs may become more interested in the female, often exhibiting behaviors like increased sniffing, licking, or attempting to mount her.

1. Chocolate: Chocolate contain substances that are toxic to dogs. These compound are called methylxanthines such as theobromine and caffeine. Dogs metabolize these compounds slowly leading to a build of toxins in their system. These compounds can cause symptoms ranging from vomiting and diarrhoea to tremors
2. Grapes and raisins: Can cause kidney failure in some dogs.
3. Onions and garlic: Can cause damage to red blood cells, leading to aneamia
4. Alcohol: Can cause intoxication, coma, and death.
5. Avocado: Contains persin, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs.
6. Raw meat, bones, and eggs: Risk of bacterial contamination (e.g., Salmonella or E. coli) and potential choking hazards from bones.
7. Dairy products: Many dogs are lactose intolerant and may experience digestive upset.
8. High-fat foods: Can lead to pancreatitis, a painful inflammation of the pancreas.

What it is and symptoms, causes and prevention🫨

What is Mange
Mange is a skin condition caused by parasitic mites.
Mange is of 2 types
1. Sarcoptic: a highly contagious skin disease caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. These mites burrow into the skin, causing intense itching, hair loss, and skin irritation in affected animals and spreads through direct contact
2. Demodectic: caused by demodex mite which are naturally occurring mites that live in the hair follicles and oil glands of many mammals, including dogs and humans without causing any problems. However, under certain conditions such as a weakened immune system, these mites can multiply excessively, leading to hair loss, skin inflammation, and sometimes secondary bacterial infection
Mange can be transmitted through direct contact with an infected animal or by sharing contaminated bedding, grooming tools, or living spaces. Factors such as poor hygiene, stress, malnutrition, and weakened immune systems can also contribute to the development and severity of mange infestations.
To prevent mange:
1. Visit a Vet for check up and to recommend treatment of parasite for your pet
2. Maintain good hygiene
3. Avoid contact with infected animals
4. Provide a balanced nutrition for your pet
5. Quarantine new animals initially and visit or call a vet to check them

A brief insight on what cutaneous Myiasis is all about 🙃

What is Cutaneous Myiasis:
Cutaneous myiasis, commonly known as "fly strike," is a parasitic condition affecting dogs worldwide. It occurs when fly larvae infest the skin, the egg laid on the moist skin or in the wounds hatch into larvae (maggots) causing discomfort and potential health complications.
Causes:
1. Poor hygiene and care
2. Presence of flies which are attracted to odor, wound and soiled fur
3. Warm weather: Myiasis is more prevalent during warmer months when fly activity increases.
Symptoms:
Localized swelling on the skin
Presence of maggots
Foul odor
Skin irritation
Behavioral changes
How to prevent it:
1. Maintain good hygiene by giving your animals a warm and happy bath
2. Promptly treat and care for any wound
3. Consult your Vet for routine examination and guide on safe insect repellent suitable for your dog.
