In my work, I let myself be inspired by nature, but also fashion, car design, music, movies and the things I dream about at night. The appearance of these imposing buildings often appeal to the imagination and excite the

fantasy. It’s exciting to visit and see what will happen in the next room. So I experience each building as a movie and as a designer I can be the director. As a 18 year old I came in contact with the work of the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier. His residential building ‘Unité d'habitation’ in Marseille has made a big impression on me. The way the light enters there, beautiful spaces, complex but fascinating layouts, all ingredients for a fantastic building. The combination of old and new has always interested me. Progress and preservation, in a design you must preserve the strengths of the old and often add new elements that reinforce it. The Louvre in Paris is for my concern one of the best examples. Pei-designed glass pyramid attracts attention, without really distract the attention off the classical building. Yet no one will wonder where the entrance is, because everyone is drawn to the pyramid, because: ‘There must be something happening there.’

The French filmmaker Jacques Tati has in the film "Mon Oncle" a futuristic decor combined with an old French village. In the film a little dog is walking in a kind of utopian modern house, where everything is perfect. He runs away to an old residential area where anything goes and where’s dirt on the ground, real life sort of speak. We can build a perfect environment, but the film actually shows that it is also a bit absurd to think that we can keep everything in control because real life is often different, surprisingly and fun. Small jokes, unexpected elements, references to things we love, these are all things that I incorporate within my designs. For example, in my house ‘de branding’ (‘surf’) the door handle has the shape of a water drop.
