Today Raf and Ine with the lovely Yara (Mia Wallace) on the podium.
Hi all,
Our Yara is a full year now so time to look back at an eventful first year with our pupper. It all began rather hectic since we weren't registered on the initial waiting list with Rutger and Karin. When there was a cancellation, we were contacted, filled out our application and, as if fate had a hand in it, matched with Yara, still Mia Wallace at the time. We've only had a short while to decide so after weighing out all the pro's and con's, we decided to make the leap and drove to Leeuwarden for our Tamaskan pup.
From day one, Yara took a shine to us (luckily) and we started our journey together. It was clear from the beginning that she was a special lady that needed a lot of attention and she made sure she got all the attention she wanted. The first months were filled with small adventures of a little Yara discovering the big world. As with most adventures, there were some hiccups along the way but they always worked out in the end.
Everywere we went, she drew the spotlight on her and made a lot of new friends. Hell, there were times we were afraid they were going to steal our little puppy. It also became clear she had a weird effect on livestock. It still baffles the mind to see sheep and goats line up to appear bigger for the little wolf.
At home, she spent her first months pinching little holes in our arms and hands with those sharp little teeth, but it was always in good fun. We were just glad she didn't have a destructive side to her. Sure, she digs a hole every now and then and she helps herself to fresh fruit in our orchard, with or without the branch, but no furniture was harmed in the raising of the pup.
Our house grew along with her. Dog beds appeared left and right, pillows and toys dropped out of the skies and hair, oh the hair... . But amidst all that, a small little wolf dog started to grow into a pretty big pupper.
After a while, we decided to enroll her in dog school to socialize her a bit more with furry friends. It didn't take long for her to become the talk of the school, a little wolf dog in obedience training... . They weren't all wrong though. From the start, it was clear that she was highly intelligent and equally stubborn which made for some challenging training sessions. Who cares for walking in a zig zag, let's play with all the dogs and sniff away at every little speck of grass on the training grounds. That's what I need to learn! So yes, it became very clear she wasn't going to be a standard, obedient dog. Still, she does everything you ask of her and much more, albeit on her own terms from time to time.
We started training her with puzzle games and scent games at home. Aha, she said (in her inner voice), finally, some worthy challenges. The stubborn, not so little anymore, puppy made way for a more focused and calmer dog.
During the summer, her first big trip came up, which proved difficult due to her travel sickness. Once arrived in the Belgian Ardennes, she got to discover another big world made up of forests and rocky paths. What a brave new world she must've thought. Every walking trip was an amazing adventure for her and brought out the best in her. She loves being active!
And even though a car ride can sometimes challenging, she's come a long way. It became clear that a dog crate is her biggest enemy in the car. The more room she has, the better she feels. She can still be a little hesitant to get into the car, but we're getting there.
The first year was almost over until we were gifted with a big snow blanket and what a gift it was! Nothing beats seeing her get out in the snow and just going crazy with all that white goodness. Getting her back inside, that's a bit of a challenge but it wouldn't be Yara if she would just give up without a fight.
At the end of the first year, our little puppy has grown into a sweet, playful and at times mischievous beauty. No matter what happened throughout the day, we always end up snuggled up against each other on the couch. How challenging the first year may have been at times, it started off something beautiful. We will be seeking out new, even bigger, adventures together, teaching her even more things and continuing to strengthen the bond she has with us.
Kind regards,
Raf and Ine
