When you go to buy a car, do you go to the lot, walk around the car, take a good look at it, and sign the paperwork to then buy it? No; of course not! You evaluate the car in it’s entirety in order to make a wise purchase and get the best “bang for your buck!”. You look at it, sit in it, drive it, do your research about the specific car, the manufacturer, you check consumer and business reviews, vehicle history reports and more.
..so why then would we accept anything less for our boerboels, the boerboels we breed to, and/or purchase, i.e. a living creature?
Take a minute and review the Boerboel International “Breed Improvement Scheme” (BIS). It is not just an appraisal of conformation, but takes other factors into consideration such as health and temperament. Like the appraisal, simply “doing it” to get it done is not enough; instead, the dog must achieve a certain score/rating in the health report and the dog’s temperament must be stable, earning a specific score.
Currently, Boerboel International (BI) is the only Boerboel organization in the world that requires males and females to have hips as well as elbows tested and scored, eyes reviewed to be free of en-ectropion and certified, males evaluated and certified to ensure that there are not undescended testicles, and females certified to be hyperplasia free. All testing must be completed, recorded, and reported by a licensed veterinarian.
Compiling the scores from conformation, temperament, and health reports, the dog receives a Total Production Index (TPI) value (Review the link associated with this post for more information).
Failure in a specific area could leave the dog being deemed not approved for breeding; on the other hand, success in these areas would leave the dog being deemed “breeding approved”.
Boerboel International stands firm in its statement to “put the boerboel first”, and I cannot help to think that includes putting the boerboel in a position of being first amongst other breeds, as the organization has set a standard, maintained it, and is continuing to improve the breed. In as much as it believes in its previous statement, I wholeheartedly believe in its latest - “There is more to a dog than looks”.
