For those who have not seen a Boerboel International Puppy Appraisal, it is something to experience - and a service that is free of charge to BI members for dogs under 12 months of age, and available to non-members for only $20. Some may ask, "Puppy Appraisal?" and think of this as a joke or something that this cutsie-wootsie, but it is quite the opposite, and some would argue that it is in fact more detailed than an appraisal. This video captures BI Judge/Appraiser Lotte Kirkegaard explaining her assessment of "Revelation The Dutchman" to spectators, owned by Ed and Nancy Tyler.

Below are the registers as well as the minimum requirements to qualify for one of the classes, after a Boerboel International (BI) appraisal and temperament test have been completed and health results reported to BI. Resulting in a Total Production Index (TPI).

Excellence Register.
For you dog to be accepted in the Excellence Register, your dog must reach the following minimums:

1. The dog must be micro chipped.
2. The dog must reach a minimum of 85% in his/her conformation score.
3. The dog must reach the minimum of 90% in the character test.
4. The dog must have a score of 100% in the health section (Hips, Elbows, Eyes and genitalia).
The dog must have a DNA profile.
These minimum requirements will give your dog a TPI of 90,00 %.
Which as of now is the minimum requirement for getting into the Excellence Register.
(Only in the combination that will fulfill the above mentioned minimums, as it is possible to have a TPI of 90% without fulfilling these!)

For you dog to be accepted in the NEW Registration+ Register your dog must reach the following minimums:

1. The dog must be micro chipped.
2. The dog must reach a minimum of 80% in his/her conformation score.
3. The dog must reach a minimum of 90% in the character test.
4. The dog must have a minimum score of 90% in the health section (Hips, Elbows, Eyes and genitalia).
This minimum result example above will give the dog a TPI of 85,00 %
Which as of now is the minimum requirement for getting into the Registration+ Register
(Only in the combination that will fulfill the above mentioned minimums, as it is possible to have a TPI of 85% without fulfilling these!)

Registration Register.
All dogs that reach these absolute minimum requirements for breeding, at a BI appraisal, but do not meet the criteria of the Registration+ or Excellence Register, will go into the Registration Register.

So to sum up the registries in BI, we have:

Birth Certificate
Pet register
Registration Register

21/03/2017

When you go to buy a car, do you go to the lot, walk around the car, take a good look at it, and sign the paperwork to then buy it? No; of course not! You evaluate the car in it’s entirety in order to make a wise purchase and get the best “bang for your buck!”. You look at it, sit in it, drive it, do your research about the specific car, the manufacturer, you check consumer and business reviews, vehicle history reports and more.
..so why then would we accept anything less for our boerboels, the boerboels we breed to, and/or purchase, i.e. a living creature?

Take a minute and review the Boerboel International “Breed Improvement Scheme” (BIS). It is not just an appraisal of conformation, but takes other factors into consideration such as health and temperament. Like the appraisal, simply “doing it” to get it done is not enough; instead, the dog must achieve a certain score/rating in the health report and the dog’s temperament must be stable, earning a specific score.

Currently, Boerboel International (BI) is the only Boerboel organization in the world that requires males and females to have hips as well as elbows tested and scored, eyes reviewed to be free of en-ectropion and certified, males evaluated and certified to ensure that there are not undescended testicles, and females certified to be hyperplasia free. All testing must be completed, recorded, and reported by a licensed veterinarian.

Compiling the scores from conformation, temperament, and health reports, the dog receives a Total Production Index (TPI) value (Review the link associated with this post for more information).

Failure in a specific area could leave the dog being deemed not approved for breeding; on the other hand, success in these areas would leave the dog being deemed “breeding approved”.

Boerboel International stands firm in its statement to “put the boerboel first”, and I cannot help to think that includes putting the boerboel in a position of being first amongst other breeds, as the organization has set a standard, maintained it, and is continuing to improve the breed. In as much as it believes in its previous statement, I wholeheartedly believe in its latest - “There is more to a dog than looks”.

For information on joining Boerboel International, hosting or attending an appraisal, breeders course, or having a database demonstration, please email either [email protected] or [email protected].

10/03/2017

For 2017 ONLY, Boerboel International (BI) has decided to allow a transitional period and is granting special exception for individuals seeking registration with BI and will accept NABBA issued paperwork through the 31st of December 2017, under the following conditions:

1. All applicants seeking registration for their boerboel(s) must ensure that the candidate as well as the dogs in its pedigree fit the BI breed standard. For example, dogs in the pedigree may only be red, brown, yellow, brindle or fawn; while piebald and Irish Markings are accepted, the dog may not have more than 30% white. Black, black and tan, blue, or dilute dogs, or candidates with these colors in their lineage with WILL NOT be accepted. For more detailed information on the breed standard, please visit the following link: https://www.boerboelinternational.com/en_US/breedstandard/.
2. A DNA sample MUST be collected and the parents of the dog known in the BI database. If the parents are not known in the database, a DNA sample MUST be collected from the parents. Boerboel International Genetic Screening (B.I.G.S.) is NOT required, but is optional. For more information on BIGS testing, please visit the following link: https://www.boerboelinternational.com/en_US/bigs/
3. If the dog was registered as pet quality with NABBA, it will be registered the same with BI; however, if you are able to obtain written permission from the breeder and get new paperwork from NABBA, an exception may be made.
4. Your dog must be appraised by a BI judge/appraiser, as NABBA appraisal scores are NOT accepted by BI.
Every registration application will be reviewed individually, as each dog's pedigree must be be analyzed independently. Owner and breeder memberships will also be considered on a case-by-case basis.

In the event that you apply and pay for registration or a membership, but the application is denied, your money will be refunded.
Please note, you are not required to be a BI member to register your dog with BI, transfer ownership of a dog, have a puppy evaluation or appraisal (conformation and temperament testing) completed, or submit DNA for a DNA profile; however, membership does afford you the opportunity to access the world's most advanced Boerboel database with DNA parenthood check and results of genetic testing/research, mate select (database selection of the best match for your dog based solely on DNA research, accompanied by a genetic health index (GHI), and offspring GHI), trial matings (with the options to check for a variety of potential disorders that could be reproduced in pups), demo pups, which allow for 2nd to 3rd generations of trial matings, and so much more!!!
For more information please feel free to email United States Team Member (USTM-BI) Leon Steele at [email protected] or [email protected].

We are in the final stages of finalizing the Maryland 2017 Appraisal for early June. This will be a 3 day event (attendance each day is not required, but if you miss it, you will surely miss out on a good time and a lot of learning!!!)

Friday - Health Testing (BI Health Package discounts available to active BI members - services must be paid for ahead of time in order to reserve a slot and set an appointment time)

Saturday - Appraisal, including temperament testing, and health test result application to health section of appraisal (if available, health results scores will be applied towards obtaining a full TPI rating - Total Production Index)

Some subjects to be covered will include, but are not limited to pedigree research, DNA parentage verification, how to review Boerboel International Genetic Screening (BIGS) results and 32 genotype results, using these BIGS results to plan trail matings up to 3 generations using demo pups/dogs, utilizing mate select, which is where the database utilizes your dog's DNA to select the best possible match for your dog to produce the best possible genetic combination, understanding your dogs genetic health index (GHI), understanding producing the highest GHI in your breedings, genetic diversity, and more (and yes, believe it or not there is more!!!)
