If you look closely you can see a horse embryo in this test tube. They are of course still very small in the beginning and it is not at all recognizable with the naked eye what they become. Did you know that it slowly starts to take recognizable shapes between day 15 and day 21? Then the brain, heart and limbs form. It is still only as small as a pea! You have a fantastic mare, but she can only produce one foal per year. If you want to make more use of her genetics, you can opt for embryo transfer (ET). This involves flushing the embryo after fertilization and then transplanting it into a surrogate mare who carries the foal to term. The standard method of embryo retrieval in mares is through uterine flushing. A flushing catheter is inserted through the cervix into the uterus and connected to a bag containing flushing fluid and an embryo filter to collect the flushed embryo. The fluid flows from the bag into the mare's uterus and then back out through the filter. During the procedure, the donor mare stands in a safe containment box, as shown in the photo. This process can be beneficial if you want multiple foals from her, if she cannot (or no longer can) carry the foal herself, or if she is still actively competing in sports. -- Je hebt een fantastische merrie staan maar ze kan zelf maar 1 veulen per jaar op de wereld zetten. Wil je toch meer doen met haar genen? Dan kun je bijvoorbeeld kiezen om het embryo te spoelen na de bevruchting en daarna te transplanteren in een draagmerrie die het veulen uitdraagt. Dit wordt embryotransfer (ET) genoemd. De standaardmethode van embryowinning in de merrie is via baarmoederspoeling. Een spoelkatheter wordt door de baarmoedermond gebracht en is verbonden aan een zak spoelvloeistof en een embryofilter waarin het gespoelde embryo opgevangen wordt. De vloeistof loopt vanuit de zak de merrie in en vervolgens weer terug naar buiten door het filter. Tijdens de procedure staat de donormerrie in een veilige opvoelbox zoals op de foto. Dit kan dus zinvol zijn als je meerdere veulens van haar wilt, als ze zelf niet (meer) het veulen kan voldragen of misschien nog actief in de sport loopt.

Successful swimmers! 🏊 Zineday turns out to be as successful in the lab as he is in the arena. From the 9 mares that came to us for OPU and ICSI, 7 of them were successful and together they produced 25 embryos! That’s an average of 2,7 embryo per mare. Congratulations to our clients!!! We will have another day of ICSI with Zineday soon so feel free to contact us for more information! -- Zineday blijkt in het lab net zo succesvol als in de arena. Van de 9 merries die bij ons aangeboden werden voor OPU/ICSI waren er 7 succesvol. Samen hebben ze 25 embryo's geproduceerd! Dat is een gemiddelde van 2.7 embryo per merrie. Felicitaties aan onze klanten met de behaalde resultaten! Thanks to our expansion, we have more availability to offer clients the service of stabling their mares with us during the OPU season. Donor mares can stay at our stables throughout the winter, enjoy daily turnout, and remain under veterinary supervision. The mares are regularly scanned for follicle development, ensuring the optimal timing for OPU can be scheduled. This eliminates the need for travel and allows for perfect monitoring before, during, and after OPU. -- Dankzij onze uitbreiding kunnen wij nog meer mensen de service bieden om hun merrie tijdens het OPU-seizoen bij ons te laten verblijven. Donoren kunnen de hele winter bij ons op stal staan, komen elke dag buiten, en staan onder veterinair toezicht. De merries worden regelmatig gecontroleerd op het aantal follikels zodat het juiste moment voor OPU ingepland kan worden. Merries hoeven hierdoor niet te reizen én kunnen perfect gemonitord worden voor, tijdens en na de OPU.

Many people think that ICSI (a technique where the sperm is directly injected into the egg) is only for mares struggling to get pregnant. But that’s not the case! ICSI can also help mares who are fertile but face other issues. Whether it’s due to issues with sperm quality, semen availability or other factors that complicate the fertilization process, ICSI can offer a solution. So, ICSI is much more widely applicable than just for 'infertile' mares—it’s a valuable technique for anyone looking to increase the chances of a successful pregnancy! Veel mensen denken dat ICSI (een techniek waarbij de zaadcel direct in de eicel wordt geïnjecteerd) alleen voor merries is die moeite hebben met drachtig worden. Maar dat is niet het geval! ICSI kan juist ook helpen bij merries waarbij er om andere redenen uitdagingen zijn om nakomelingen te verkrijgen. Of het nu komt door een probleem met de kwaliteit van het sperma, beschikbaarheid van exclusief sperma of andere factoren die het bevruchtingsproces bemoeilijken, ICSI kan uitkomst bieden. Dus, ICSI is veel breder inzetbaar dan alleen voor 'onvruchtbare' merries—het is een waardevolle techniek voor iedereen die de kans op een succesvolle dracht wil vergroten!

On December 9th, we offer a unique opportunity for horse breeders! We will have one cut of frozen semen from Olympic showjumper Zineday (Zinedine x Polydor) available in our ICSI lab. At the moment, there are still a few spots open for Ovum Pick Up (OPU) at our clinic. Following castration, a small quantity of semen was preserved. Worldwide, only a very limited amount of frozen semen from Zineday is available for breeding. We hebben die dag één knipje diepvriessperma van Olympisch springpaard Zineday (Zinedine x Polydor) beschikbaar in ons ICSI-lab.
