9 jaar geleden, in de vroege ochtend aangekomen in Portugal, dus tijd voor het "doggy-breakfast". Nu, 9 jaar later, hebben ze dit iedere ochtend op hun eigen Quinta in Póvoa de Atalaia 😊

In Zwitserland is het eerste nestje Barbado's geboren. Deze pupjes zijn geboren op dierendag, hoe mooi kan dat zijn.

What a great weekend we had 7 years ago!!
First time in the Netherlands this Portugese Shepherd breed, the Barbado da Terceira! Presentation in front of our Dutch judge Rony Doedijns! Curious?? They are there tomorrow! Presentation in front Estela Armida Oliva from Spain and in the Main Ring! Happy to welcome you at the Sunday Dogshow Maastricht in the Mecc!

I think it is 3 years ago, maybe 4, that a lot of us were here in Alpedrinha to do a test with our dogs and the sheep. João Silvino Venâncio Costa showed us where to look.

And I remember that Mago and Deusa stayed as far away from the sheep as they could, only Bruxa had some more interest. A total lack of instinct already?
Meanwhile we have goats here at our Quinta. Six of them, 3 female adults, 3 female babies. Every morning we bring them from the stable and night-meadow to their day-meadow. And soon they get another day-meadow.

Step by step we introduced the goats to the dogs. First with the dogs on leash, and soon with the dogs loose. Meanwhile Mago and Bruxa are -usually- good help to bring the goats in, although the obviously lack training, and tend to walk the wrong way. But they are nowhere afraid of the goats, nor aggressive to the goats. Today we had them all loose on the fields of our Quinta for 30 minutes, just to see if that would work. And yes, we will extend this in the near future (on dry days only, goats hate rain even more then we do).

Diamante and Deusa will soon also go in training to herd the goats… and maybe we will be a flock ans shepherd somewhere in the future. But the good thing is, even after generations without practice, the instinct is still there.

The video was not the best performance of the dogs, yet filming and herding at the same time is difficult for us also.. video has no sound...

FCI-keurmeester Armida Oliva heeft het gevecht tegen ALS verloren en is overleden. Oliva was een van de 2 keurmeesters die in 2016 de Barbado da Terceira als eerste keurden, samen met Rony Doedijns. Dat was tijdens de Maastricht Dog Show, op uitnodiging van John Wauben.

Ook na 2016 bleef Oliva geintresseerd in ons mooie ras. De hondenwereld en de Barbado-familie gaan haar missen.

We do not know the dog, nor the breeder. But it looks like a nice dog with an instructuin manual, not for unexperienced owners. For those familiar with intelligent, herding dogs a real soulmate no doubt.
