Whalesafari Andenes - Hvalsafari Andenes

Whalesafari Andenes - Hvalsafari Andenes We offer whale watching off Andøy in Vesterålen, Northern Norway. Off Andøy there are ten different whale species. We combine whale watching and research.
(151)

Established 8. June 1989 www.whalesafari.com Our Whale centre is located by the lighthouse in Andenes, Vesterålen, in northern Norway. Here the continental shelf lies closer to land than anywhere else along the Norwegian coast, making Andenes ideal for whale watching. The s***m whale, which is the largest toothed whales, typically feeds on deep sea squids and fish along the edge of the continenta

l shelf. To help us locate the s***m whales, our boats are equipped with hydrophones (under water microphones): we can therefore listen to the clicking sounds that the s***m whale produces to communicate, navigate and to search for their prey. With the aid of these hydrophones, we can locate the whale whilst he is still under water and approach it with minimal impact on the animal. We occasionally see other species of whales on our safaris such as killer whales (orcas), minke whales, pilot whales, dolphins, fin whales and humpback whales. Our guides at the Whale centre and on board our vessels are biologists and students from many different countries. The tourists can also learn more about the whales that we encounter from our guided tour in the museum, which is complementary in every whale safari ticket. Research on living whales has been important to us since the establishment of the Whale Centre in 1989. We have researchers present onboard the vessels and they study the behaviour and the population biology of the whales that we encounter. Whalesafari Ltd. offers researchers from different universities to stay and use the facilities connected to the centre. Since we have a sighting rate of 99% on our safaris, we can offer you a whale guarantee on our trips: we will offer you a new trip for free on the first available departure that suits you, if we cannot locate any cetacean on the trip. We tailor travel packages from Tromsø to Lofoten with activities, transportation, accommodation and more. You can book a package by visiting our web page or writing to [email protected]. Our summer season starts in May and lasts until September, while the winter season is from October to April. For information about trips, please check out our website or contact us via email or phone. Opening hours vary from summer to winter:

WHALES OFF ANDØYA: The Humpback whale can live up to 90 years! Feeding humpbacks are a spectacular sight, as they engulf large volumes of water which they filter through baleen plates hanging from the roof of their mouths. This whale is one of ten species that you can experience on one of our whale watching trips.

Two days ago we had a fantastic Whale Watching experience with over 40 pilot whales. Look at that cute calf! Did you know that the name "Pilot" is referring to the whales appearing to have one animal leading the rest of the group by swimming in front? 😍🐋 📸 Marten Bril

We're kicking of the whale-watching season with exciting news ✨

One of the s***m whales seen near Andenes, Norway, had been photographed in the Azores 10 years earlier!

We continue to thank researcher Lisa Steiner for her extensive work matching whale flukes from all over the North Atlantic Ocean. This gives us valuable insight into the long lives of these animals! 🐳

Psst... did you know that we also organize northern lights tours?
Here you are some pictures from the Aurora Walk last Monday.
The moonlight made the walk magical, and at the cabin tasty food was waiting...

Whereas female s***m whales are highly social and live in family groups, males are believed to become increasingly solitary as they get older. On rare occasions though, we can observe adult male s***m whales surfacing and diving together. These associations are sighted most frequently in winter and spring. This may reflect companionship, the presence of a lot of food in that location, or both! 🐳🦑

The weather forecast for tomorrow looks quite good and we are looking forward to the safari! Will we see ***mwhales? Or other species? We never know for sure, but we have seen whales or dolphins on ~98% of our trips this year 🐋

🐳The whale seen today has been observed here many times since summer 2011.
Can you guess where some of his scars and scratches come from?

The fin whale is the second largest animal in the world, surpassed only by the blue whale. These 20+ meter long giants have been nicknamed "the greyhounds of the sea" as they can travel at speeds up to 45 km/h. It is not uncommon to observe a fin whale blow in the distance, and then suddenly having it surface close to the boat!

What do you think this was checking us out for?

(P.S. no matter how curious we humans get, we must always leave the whales their space).

Called 'Elg' in Norwegian, the moose are the largest land animals found in Norway. They can reach a shoulder height of a stunning 2.3 meters! With antlers that span up to 1.5 meters 👀

Playful and sociable, Risso's Dolphins are quite new to the more northern latitudes, such as here in Andenes at 69°North.

Here you can see an older male with a white front body and larger size, swimming with at least one calf. The calves have pinkish/ brown faces and are of course smaller.

Risso's Dolphins also have very visible scars, and this helps us to recognise them. They turn whiter as the scars accumulate over time and the skin loses pigmentation.

It's always very exciting for us when we see a whale that is known to us. Last week Jade van Dam, one of our Marine Biologists, spotted this ***mwhale and captured his fluke on camera. She was then able to identify him!

He's known to us as ID_0570 but, being a regular visitor to , it's time we gave him a name. We think Batman suits him 🙂
Can you see the resemblance?

After two months continuously swirling over the horizon, the sun has started to set also at 69° North. But evenings are still very long, and the late-summer flowers are blooming everywhere. Do you know how these pink flowers are called?
