Three years ago, this dogmama tried to find something to help protect her puppy’s paws going dry and irritated from ice, salt and gravel.
It quickly became clear that the products on the market were disappointing and overpriced. They mostly consisted of cheap “filler” ingredients such as petroleum derived paraffin, synthetic fatty acids like cetearyl alcohol or triglycerides.
Most also contained potentially irritating ingredients such as perfume, preservatives and essential oils. To the extent they contained natural base oils, these were clearly all the processed versions. In other words: simple, occlusive (film forming) products made for making a profit.
Since I had spent years learning about skincare for humans, I had a whole variety of high quality, cold pressed oils that I could hardly use up for myself. So my little pup got oil paw massages and oil tasting sessions. I made a basic wax recipe that evolved over the years as I kept testing oils, waxes and natural additives in different proportions.
The resulting product is a rich balm that holds together like a soft wax and melts on your fingertips. Every tiny amount is packed full of beneficial nutrients, bioactive compounds and a variety of fatty acids.
Many of the ingredients are multi-functional to the skin, carrying both antioxidants, vitamins, moisturizing and anti-inflammatory compounds.
This means that the balm performs more like active, emollient skincare than as a simple occlusive. Active skincare changes the skin itself, improving it and making it resilient to external conditions.
It also means that you only need a tiny amount every time you use it, so it will last longer than you might think.
To my knowledge, this product has no equal on the market today.
Still - that doesn’t mean everyone knows about it! I appreciate any mention of it, so that my hobby might grow into an actual business 🫶
