W͟h͟a͟t͟ i͟s͟ C͟͟a͟n͟i͟n͟e͟ D͟i͟s͟t͟e͟m͟p͟e͟r͟?
*Canine distemper is a viral disease that affects dogs and other animals such as raccoons, wolves, foxes, and ferrets. It is caused by the canine distemper virus (CDV), which belongs to the Morbillivirus family.
*The virus is spread through contact with respiratory or other body fluids of infected animals.
1).S͟y͟s͟t͟e͟m͟s͟ A͟f͟f͟e͟c͟t͟e͟d͟
*Multisystemic : All lymphatic tissues,respiratory and Alimentary, urogenital tracts are affected.
* CNS : Brain and spinal cord also disturbed.
2).A͟g͟e͟
*Young and unnvaccinated animals are disturbed.
3).C͟l͟i͟n͟c͟a͟l͟ S͟i͟g͟n͟s͟
Clinical signs can vary depending upon the stage and severity of Infection .some common are include
*Respiratory symptoms: Coughing,Sneezing,nasal discharge
*GIT symptoms : Vomiting,Dirrhea,loss of appetide.
Neurological symptoms:Seizures,Tremors,loss of coordination
*Occular symptoms: Discharge from eyes,Inflammation of eyelids.
*Skin symptoms: Inflammation of skin,crusty skin lesions,loss of hairs.
4).T͟r͟e͟a͟t͟m͟e͟n͟t͟
As there is no specific treatment for canine distemper.Supportive care is good therapy.The Goal of treatment is relieve the clinical signs ,prevent secondary bacterial infection and support the dog to do fight against this virus.
A).Isolation : Isolate the affected dog from health dog to prevent this virus.
B).Fluids Therapy : IV fluids given to animal to maintain electrolyte balance.
C)Anti-Viral : Antiviral medications used.
D)Anti-Biotics: Used to prevent bacterial infection.
E)Anti-convulsants: Given to control seizures
F) Cleaning: cleaning of nasal and occular discharge.
G) Corticosteriods: may provide short-term control.Immunosuppressive dosages may enhance viral dessimination.
5).D͟i͟a͟g͟n͟o͟s͟e͟
*Diagnose can be done on the basis of the clinical signs and history of dog.
*Laboratory tests also include to diagnosis of the distemper. Some common tests include
a)CBC
b)PCR
c)serology test
d)Imaging studies.
6).Z͟o͟o͟n͟o͟t͟i͟c͟ p͟o͟t͟e͟n͟t͟i͟a͟l͟
*It is not zoonotic.
*Sometimes it can be seen in humans who have weakened immune system ,Such as those with HIV/AIDS may be risk to have them..But it is in more rare cases.So, its not zoonotic.
