Description:
The Platinum Angel fish, Pterophyllum scalare, is a great centrepiece for a tropical aquarium. Freshwater Platinum Angelfish can grow quite large, so larger aquarium is recommended to thrive. The brightness of an angelfish’s colouring depends on its mood and stress levels. When angelfish are stressed or asleep, they can appear pale, or duller in colour. Healthy, well-nourished angelfish living in ideal water conditions will display vibrant colours.

Angelfish are popular among aquarists because of their unique arrowhead bodies and flowing fins. Although angelfish are usually peaceful, angel fish can be prone to prey upon small fish if they can fit them in their mouth, and odd fits of aggression amongst themselves or with fish of a similar size, especially during breeding season, although this aggression is commonly not fatal.

Angelfish are native to tropical South America, including most of the Amazon water system in French Guiana, Brazil, Guyana, Columbia, and Peru. Angelfish are commonly found in slow-moving streams, floodplains, and swamps, in warm, acidic freshwater. Angelfish are active, mid-level swimmers in an aquarium, weaving in and out of aquarium plants, and are diurnal - meaning that they’re more active during the day than at night.

Are Platinum Angel Fish aggressive?
Angelfish can be described as mildly aggressive but are generally peaceful. With enough space to claim their own territory, angelfish are peaceful, but when housed with too many fish of their kind or of a similar size, angelfish fight and peck to defend their space or claim a breeding partner. Although angelfish form schools, angel fish are not sociable and rarely interact with one another. It must be pointed out however that angelfish are less aggressive than other American cichlids and are very unlikely to bully or fatally attack other fish species in the aquarium.

Features:
Approx. supplied size: 1-2" / 3-5cm
Maximum size: 6" / 15cm
Origin: South America
Ideal number kept together: 2+
Temperament: Generally peaceful, occasional aggression

Water conditions:
Our conditions: pH 7.5 temp 24°C
Ideal pH: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: 4-12 dGH
Ideal temperature: 23–28°C
Lighting: moderate to high
Water flow: low to moderate

Ease of Care:
Moderate. Angelfish are hardy, but also prone to aggression. A larger (100L or more) planted aquarium with plenty of caves and hiding spaces is recommended.

Diet:
Omnivore. Angel fish are happy with flake and granules. Meatier live and frozen food can also be given occasionally to supplement.

Compatibility:
Can be housed in a community aquarium with caution, alongside other peaceful community fish. Angel fish are prone to fin-nip, so do not house with long finned fish, or anything small enough to be considered food.

Breeding:
Angelfish are egg layers but struggle with parental care, so are not easy to breed without a hatchery or separate breeding tank. Female angelfish have smaller, more rounded bodies than male angelfish.

Life Span:
Platinum angelfish can live 10-12 years in perfect conditions.

Mollies are live bearers and can be fairly easy to breed. For many aquarists the problem is often not getting them to breed but stopping them from breeding! They are very attractive and come in many different morphs of colour and shape.

Mollies like abit of salt in their water to thrive but are easy to keep and great fun for the beginner and experience aquarist alike.

Description:

Also known as Golden Moon Platy or Moonfish, Mickey Mouse Platy could be a very good option for beginners. They are easy to care and increase the beauty of the tank due to their lively, bright, and attractive colors. The name Mickey Mouse is given this specie due to the presence of a hidden Mickey Mouse design near the tail. It is not only easy to keep but easy to breed as well. That’s why it grabs the interest of both aquarists as well as breeders. It is a live-bearing species, which means it lays fry and not eggs. The size of adult fish ranges from 1 to 2 inches.

Distribution and Habitat:

Very peaceful in nature and perfect as a community fish, Mickey Mouse Platy is a native of Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico. Mid-dwelling in nature, these Platy fish require a minimum 10-gallon fish tank size for swimming happily inside. They are easy to care for and maintain. Today, due to their peaceful nature, easy to maintenance and easy breeding habit, they are found everywhere.

Temperature:

The right temperature for Mickey Mouse Platy ranges from 64 to 77 F (18 to 25 C). Make sure to avoid sudden temperature fluctuations that could bring the fish in stress and susceptible to diseases. When the temperature is within the range, the fish thrives well and live happily for its full life span.

Water conditions:

Apart from the right temperature, it is important that the salinity and hardness of the water also remain the same. The ideal pH for Mickey Mouse Platy is considered best to be within 7.0 to 8.2. Likewise, the hardiness of the water should remain between 10 to 25 dGH.

Breeding:

Platy gets sexually mature by four months of age. It can be sexed and separated after four months. The specialty is female Platy can retain sperms from the male for a number of months. It continues giving birth without mating. The fry emerges after 30 days of fertilization. Make sure you protect the fry from the parents and separate them immediately; otherwise, the other fish will feed on them.

Feeding:

You can give them live food like worms, insects, and vegetables. They are not a fussy eater and can feed on a variety of food like flakes, frozen or freeze-dried. You can also supplement them with brine shrimp, bloodworms, glass worms, etc.

Life Span:

They typically live for 2 to 3 years that depend upon conditions like the water parameters, how well they are fed, etc.

Do You Know?

These fish comprise black dot in their tail that resembles two smaller round ears giving an image of Mickey Mouse. And that’s how they got their name as Mickey Mouse Platy.

The name ‘swordtail’ is derived from its elongated lower lobe of the male’s caudal fin (tailfin). Interestingly, female swordtail though larger than the male, lacks the signature ‘sword’. Wild Swordtail fish is green colored, with a red or brown lateral stripe and speckles on the dorsal and, sometimes, caudal fins. The male’s ‘sword’ is yellow, edged in black below.
Captive breeding swordtail fish dispose of various color and pattern varieties and have became largely popular in the aquarium industry.

Maintenace:

It is optimal to house swordtails in a tank with the size of 77 centimeter square for each 2.5cm of Swordtail. Avoid over sun exposure because it can easily cause changes in the temperature.

Water conditions:

Swordtail fish from Saigon Aquarium accommodates well to tap water, after chlorine treatment.

Range of pH: 6.5 – 8.0

Water temperature: appx 26˚C – 28˚C

Diet:

Swordtail fish are omnivores, they eat all live food, frozen food and vegetable food, so rotate their diet daily and feed only what they can consume in under 2 minutes, once or twice a day. Do not overfeed or leave food leftover in the tank, as it causes ammonia and nitrite and becomes toxic.

Behaviour:

In general, swordtail fish are peaceful and make good community fish. Male swordtails can be aggressive towards each other and are constantly trying to mate, so a ratio of 2 to 3 females per male is advised to prevent excessive harassment of the females. Good tankmates include tetras, rasboras, danios, peaceful barbs, and rainbowfish.
