If you rescued a baby, motherless, kitten, here’s a DIY milk recipe you can use in a pinch. 🍼🐱👇

Mother cat's milk is the ideal nutrition for kittens. 👌 It provides important antibodies that help protect the babies from disease until their own immune systems can. Ideally, kittens should be with their mother until they’re at least 6 weeks old, because the longer they are fed mom's milk, the healthier their start in life.

Sometimes nursing mom’s will foster orphan kittens, so that’s the next best option.
Motherless kittens who must be hand-fed should be given either a commercial kitten formula available at pet stores or online, or a homemade, nutritionally complete milk formula. 🍼

If you find a kitten that needs a milk replacer ASAP, here’s a temporarily fix (until you can source a nutritionally complete commercial formula or recipe, I’ve included one in today’s article, link below).🐈💪

Veterinarian’s Voice:
================
Instagram.com/veterinarians_To_be
“Dear Pet Owner,

I am writing this to you because I am human. I am a Veterinary Assistant, or a Veterinary Technician with hours of education and debt, or a Veterinarian with even more hours of education and even more debt. But I am still human. My feelings can be hurt.

For those of you that think we only do this for the money, google the average salary of a veterinary assistant (about the same as an Aldi cashier) or a veterinary technician (about the same as a carpet cleaning technician) or a veterinarian (about the same as a marketing manager). I can assure you, the physical and emotional toll is not worth what we are paid.

We do this for the love of animals. Or at least that's how it starts. A glimmer of something bigger than us. The thought that we can make a difference in the lives of pets and their owners. We want to save lives, heal the sick and help ease the passing of those we can’t.

Before you accuse us of only wanting financial gain, ask us when was the last time we helped an owner to relinquish a very sick pet because we could not bring ourselves to see it die because their good hearted human just didn’t have the money. Ask us why we then take on the debt of the surgery or treatment and lifelong care ourselves. Ask us how we feel when we cannot help because we are already paying that large bill from the last one we tried to save, whether or not that pet lived.

Ask us how it feels to be told we have no heart, to be told that if we really cared about animals, we would do this for free. Ask us how much it saddens us when we prepare an estimate only to find it is out of your reach. It kills us that we cannot just reach into our pockets and pull out the checkbook and help you as you agonize over the life and death of your pet. Although sometimes we do. Sometimes we just can’t bear the sadness and we do help to pay a bill. We don’t expect to get paid back, and 99% of the time, we don’t. Your pet’s life is worth more than the money it will take to treat it. Your pet’s life is priceless, to us as well as you.

But the places we work are bound by the same financial laws of every other business. They have to pay the rent/mortgage, utilities, equipment, medical supplies and staff it takes to treat your pet. They even pay the snow plow guy that makes sure you can get into our lot on a cold winter night or the lawn service that makes sure your pet can p*e in the grass without disappearing. This is not utopia where money doesn’t exist. If we did every thing for free, just for the love of animals, the place you take your pet for care would cease to exist. We wish it weren’t so, as do you, but it is reality.

Ask us about the multiple animals we support in our own households because no one wanted them or could not fix them. Ask us about those patients that stay with us long after we leave the building. The ones that make us cry through the night while we hug our own pets tightly.

Ask us how heartless we are when we have to look both you and your pet in the eye and deliver bad news. Ask us how many deaths we have witnessed, how many owners we have hugged and cried with. Ask us how we try to keep it together and remain professional until we walk out of the room, then cry. Do not mistake our stoicism for lack of caring. It is merely a thin layer of protection for our hearts.

Ask the ER veterinarian, technician, assistant how it feels to work 16 hours just to have the very pet you diligently attended, grew attached to, pass away or be euthanized because no matter what we did, it was just too sick. Ask us if we grieve with you.... because we do.

Ask us how we feel when we take your bleeding, broken, seizing, crying pet from your arms when you come in the door.

Ask us how we feel when we take your unresponsive pet and race it to the back only to find they are gone and now we have to come back and tell you. We want to hug you while you sob and sometimes we do, because we’ve all been there, we know how it feels. We are all too familiar with the heart wrenching pain that comes with losing a pet, a friend, a family member. Ask us how we feel when we cannot fix our own pets, even with all our resources and knowledge.

Now, let me tell you why we do this for a living…..

For the love of animals”

Dogs Can Decipher Our Intent 🐶👀

A 2021 study suggests that dogs can tell the difference between intentional and accidental human behavior, which has been backed up by a recent study. In the new study, 48 pet dogs showed through their behavior and body language that they instinctively understood the intentions of a “clumsy” human vs. a human who was deliberately messing with them. 🤔 Have you ever wondered if the food you feed your pet is highly nutritious and easily digested?

It is important to consider digestibility when choosing any food for your pet. If you buy a commercial product, it is important to carefully read the ingredient labels and to know whether those ingredients provide optimum nutrition.

Digestibility (also referred to as bioavailability) is defined as how easily and completely a food or ingredient can be absorbed and used by the body.

The top 3 most digestible foods:
1️⃣ Egg whites contain all the essential amino acids your pet needs
2️⃣ Animal muscle meat and organ meat
3️⃣ Dairy products, particularly raw and fermented milk (pasteurized dairy is not recommended)

Managing Hereditary Megaesophagus in German Shepherd Pups

German shepherd pups have the highest incidence of heritable megaesophagus (the development of an enlarged esophagus) among all breeds. Thankfully, genetic testing is now available to help lower the risk of this condition in future litters.

Many puppies with megaesophagus can live relatively normal lives when provided with proper lifelong care involving a modified feeding regimen. Read today’s free blog post to learn more about this condition (link below).

Redesigned Dog Breeds That Were Once Healthy 🐕

Over the years, several breeds have been deliberately fashioned to exaggerate certain physical traits at the expense of their health, longevity and quality of life. 😔 Here’s how some breeds looked when they were healthy, before they were “remodeled” through poor breeding practices.

See more of these dog breeds’ then and now in today’s free blog post: https://bit.ly/3OHbdln

Are you feeding your dog too often? ⏰🍗⏰🥩⏰🥕🐶

Dogs fed once a day are less likely to be diagnosed with age-related conditions than pooches fed more often, study claims.

In the largest largest study to date of feeding frequency conducted in companion dogs, University of Arizona-led experts analyzed data on 24,238 pet dogs from the US and found:

• Being fed once a day lowered the risk of nine types of canine health problems
• These included cancer, dental issues and either kidney or urinary complications
• Similarly, dogs fed only once daily scored lower on tests of cognitive problems
• But the team said it is too early to advise owners to change their pet's diets

“We view these results as an exciting first step of an ongoing exploration of the impact of diet on companion dogs living in human environments. Given the intense interest in, and popularization of, ‘longevity diets’ such as intermittent fasting and time-restricted feeding, these types of studies in dogs are both timely and important. We believe these studies will ultimately offer insights into factors that promote health and longevity for both dogs and humans.” - The Dog Aging Project

The scientists and researchers we interviewed for The Forever Dog book agreed that one meal a day for healthy dogs is ideal, in terms of maximizing autophagy and minimizing metabolic stress.

To learn how to transition your pup to a new eating schedule and create an eating window (which allows your pup to receive the benefits of intermittent fasting while offering the same amount of food) check out the section in our book “Personalized Meals as Medicine” found here: www.foreverdog.com

EAT & FEED BLUEBERRIES!

In a study conducted on sled dogs, blueberry supplementation elicited significantly elevated antioxidant status in the dogs.

This suggests that dogs fed blueberries should be better protected against oxidative damage. -

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16520073

Aside from being classified as antiangiogenic aka anti-cancer, blueberries contain a compound called pterostilbene, a derivative of resveratrol.

These little blue powerhouses are good antioxidants because they contain phenolics that preferentially react with free radicals.

So, offering your furry companion blueberries can help protect them against cancer!

⚠️ POOR ORAL HEALTH = SERIOUS HEALTH PROBLEMS ⚠️

A neglected mouth can put your dog's overall health at risk❗

Brushing your dog's teeth every night, feeding a nutrient dense, species-appropriate fresh food diet and offering high-quality bones and chews can improve oral health and reduce the risk for a dirty mouth that can lead to other medical problems. 🐶👍

28/03/2021

Reasons why your dog in vomiting yellow/green foam or throwing up bile.

You’ve probably seen your dog scarf down something that is indigestible and chuck it right back up later. Intermittent instances of dog vomiting are generally fine and mostly not concerning from a health perspective.

The presence of bile, however, is a different story. This yellow-green substance is similarly unpleasant to clean up, but if it’s in your dog’s vomit, and especially if your dog is throwing up bile with any frequency, you should have them checked out right away.

Here are five of the most common reasons why dogs throw up bile:

Bilious Vomiting Syndrome

Bile is a fluid produced in the liver and stored in the gallbladder, Once food is ingested, bile gets released into the small intestine and helps to break down food so the body can digest and utilize it appropriately.

Bilious vomiting syndrome occurs when bile leaks into the stomach from the small intestine. This usually happens because a dog hasn’t eaten in a while or because they’ve consumed an abnormally large amount of fatty foods. It can also happen if the dog has eaten a lot of grass or drank a lot of water.

Typically, patients affected by bilious vomiting benefit from readily digestible, low-fat, high-fiber diets,. You may also want to consider smaller, more frequent meals for your dog, especially if the bilious vomiting occurs first thing in the morning, after a long period without eating.

Gastrointestinal Diseases

When a dog is throwing up bile, it’s a sign of a number of conditions that affect the digestive system, including inflammatory disease, ulcers, parasite infections, and certain cancers. In each of these cases, the underlying condition needs to be diagnosed and treated by a veterinarian to relieve the vomiting.

Because bile’s acidity can wear down the esophagus, it can lead to ulcerations if left unchecked. Breeds with sensitive stomachs that are predisposed to problems like this include Bulldog breeds, toy breeds, retrievers, and Poodles.

Pancreatitis

Endocrine disorders like pancreatitis can occur after a dog ingests highly fatty or oily foods. This causes inflammation of the pancreas, and in turn, bilious vomiting, along with intense abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Pancreatitis usually occurs three to five days after a dog eats fatty foods, but it can occur as early as 24 hours after. So you could see your dog throwing up bile between 24 and 48 hours after they ate the fatty food.

To help treat this, veterinarians will provide care to prevent against dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. During this time, treatment includes withholding food to allow the pancreas to rest.

Intestinal Blockages

Toys, bones, and even large hairballs can create a blockage in the intestine. “These are emergencies and require immediate medical intervention.

Regular vomiting turns into a dog throwing up yellow bile after their stomach has been emptied, but it’s ideal to address this problem before reaching this point. An extreme lack of energy and severe abdominal pain may indicate a blockage.

Surgery is the most common method for removal, but an endoscopic procedure can resolve some cases.

Allergies

If your dog consumes something they’re allergic to, vomiting may occur, and bile may be present.

Often, this happens shortly after switching to a new food if you notice this, you should switch back to a food that you know works for your dog right away. “Common food offenders include beef, dairy, wheat, egg, chicken, corn, lamb, soy, pork, rabbit, and fish.

In other cases, a dog may become allergic to something they’ve eaten regularly for years. Most pets develop food allergies within 1 to 5 years of age, but some pets move, and the change in the environment can trigger new allergies.

In this case, a strict 12-week diet trial may be conducted to identify the offending protein. You could then work with a veterinary nutritionist to create a diet that removes the allergen without depriving your dog of the vitamins and nutrients needed to function at full strength.
