XYPEX WHITE PAPER - Protecting Precast Sewage Structures with Crystalline Technology

Both physical damage and chemical attack of concrete in sewage and septic systems is possible. However, chemical attack is much more prevalent and has two primary causes: acid attack and sulfate attack. In the wastewater industry, the acid attack mechanism is normally referred to as Microbial Induced Corrosion (MIC) – a process in which sulfides in the waste water stream are transformed by biological reactions into sulfuric acid. The sulfur compounds produced by this reaction pe*****te the concrete substrate helping to initiate sulfate attack.

Season's Greetings from Xypex

23/12/2020

ON THE COVER! A Xypex project was recently featured on the cover of the Construction Specifier magazine. The parking garage of Tower 155, Boca Raton, Florida is two levels below grade with the presence of extreme hydrostatic pressure. The area’s water table is 1 m (3.5 ft) below the ground level, so making sure the structure is watertight was extremely important. Due to space constraints and a difficult installation process, a crystalline waterproofing system was used on this project.

XYPEX PROJECT: New Atlanta Water Infrastructure Built To Last

The ambitious $368-million Atlanta Water Program has successfully converted a defunct granite quarry into a 2.4 billion gallon reservoir and extended the city’s drinking water reserve supply from a mere 3 days to more than 30 days. Xypex Admix C-500 was added to the concrete for two critical flow control channels in order to help the city meet its 100-year longevity goal for the new structures.

The Runner-Up Winner for Australia for the 2020 Xypex Best International Project Award was presented to Xypex Australia for the Murray Irrigation Rehabilitation project.

As the largest privately owned irrigation company in the Southern Hemisphere, Murray Irrigation, Australia, continues to sustain its high performance in water delivery, security, and retention. Producing 1,000,000 mega liters of water annually and irrigating over 700,000 hectares of land, Murray Irrigation is responsible for maintaining over 4,000 bridge and culvert structures and 3,000 km of irrigation canals across the system.

After some years of use, it was evident that a large number (217) of bridge and culvert assets of varying age and stages of deterioration needed remediation. The concrete structures typically exhibited spalling and cracking. Therefore, a concrete waterproofing solution was needed that would be resistant to water erosion, cracks, and carbonation; a requirement specified in the engineering reports.

Xypex Concentrate was chosen as the preferred product to meet the engineer’s requirements for an anti-carbonation coating and because of the added benefits of utilizing Xypex Concentrate.

The Runner-Up Winner for Middle East for the 2020 Xypex Best International Project Award was presented to PBS Israel Ltd for the Midtown Towers in Israel.

Located in Tel Aviv, Israel, the Midtown Towers are a pair of skyscrapers recently built in one of Tel Aviv’s main thoroughfares, Begin Road. The office tower, standing 197 m high, has 50 floors and is the third tallest building in Israel. The residential tower has 43 floors, 338 apartments, and is the tallest residential tower in Israel at 183 m. The towers are part of a complex that includes a large shopping center and 2,100 parking spaces in 6 underground floors.

Xypex Admix C-500 NF and the Xypex Concentrate coating system were chosen above traditional methods of waterproofing, such as membranes, due to Xypex’s unique and effective crystalline technology.

The Runner-Up Winner for Latin America for the 2020 Xypex Best International Project Award was presented to Grupo MG (Mexico) for the Michin Aquarium. The Aquarium is located in Puebla, Mexico and is a center for conservation, research, and education. The Aquarium has more than 90 exhibits with different species located within one of the six ecosystems (Jungle, Forrest, Reef, Mangrove, Open Sea, and Lakes & Rivers). Each section “recreates the corresponding atmosphere through sounds, colors and various elements that together create a dynamic tour for visitors.”

Due to the nature of aquariums, a waterproofing solution was needed for the various tanks and exhibits that were to be built in the new Puebla Aquarium. These tanks and exhibits would remain filled for more than 30 years, so the owner needed a guarantee that there would not be the slightest possibility of leakage and therefore no maintenance in any concrete element of the aquarium. Furthermore, as some of the tanks would contain salt water, the concrete needed to withstand the effects of marine environments.

Despite being specified to use surface waterproofing, the owner and contractor decided that Xypex’s crystalline waterproofing technology was the best solution.

The Winner for Africa for the 2020 Xypex Best International Project Award was presented to Beton Alexco (Egypt) for the Rod El Farag Axis Tahya Masr Bridge, deemed the widest cablestayed bridge in the world by Guinness World Records. This bridge is a critical travel corridor that links the Red Sea to the Mediterranean.

One of the key challenges for the bridge designers was how to adequately protect the critical concrete structures from the effects of air pollution and the moist riverine environment. The consulting engineers for the project recommended that the main concrete towers be treated with Xypex Concentrate in order to provide integral, lifetime protection from natural and manmade elements.

The Winner for Europe for the 2020 Xypex Best International Project Award was presented to ASTOP Magyarország Kft (Hungary) for the Budapest Pedestrian Tunnel.

Like most federal governments Hungary’s central government is housed in several buildings within Budapest. Two primary building complexes are the Parliament building and the Parliamentary Offices building that contains the offices of parliamentarians and their staff. As might be expected there is constant pedestrian traffic between these buildings and the sometimes harsh winter weather as well as the need to cross a main downtown arterial road make travel between these buildings inconvenient and time consuming. The connection of these building with a climate controlled pedestrian tunnel was deemed a priority.

The key challenges in building this pedestrian tunnel were the high water table created by the close proximity of the Danube River and addressing the need to prevent interruption of traffic flow on the street between the buildings. The street is both a major thoroughfare for cars as well as a street car line. The tunnel needed to be water tight to create a comfortable pedestrian space and the traffic needed to be maintained throughout the construction phase.

The concrete of the tunnel was solely waterproofed with Xypex products.

The International Runner-Up for the 2020 Xypex Best Project Award was presented to APAAR Infratech Pvt Ltd (India) for the Rihand Dam Rehabilitation project.

The Rihand Dam is the largest dam in India by volume and provides critical hydro-electricity to consumers and water for irrigation. Over time, the concrete has experienced deterioration due to AAR and ASR (Alkali Aggregate Reaction and Alkali Silicate Reaction) resulting in cracking and surface loss.

The problem areas identified included deteriorated concrete surfaces, loose construction joints, structural cracks, alligator cracking from AAR, corrosion of embedded reinforcement, spalling and voids in concrete elements. Xypex’s unique crystalline technology was chosen as the sole repair solution.
