"Every day, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Office receives several complaints from members of the public regarding dogs. For some, dogs are barking all night and keeping their family awake. For others, they are fed up with being chased by dogs on their way home from work. Sometimes, people have been bitten by dogs and are worried about rabies. Other times, they want to know how to help the sick o
r injured dog, or the starving puppies on their street. Regardless of the specific concern, it is clear that dogs are a major concern for the people of our city. As the authority responsible for safeguarding public health and social welfare in Kathmandu, the KMC has therefore launched the Metropolitan Humane Dog Management program, with the support of Humane Society International and the Jane Goodall Institute Nepal. This is a first of-its-kind, municipal One Health program, via which the entire city’s dog population will be effectively managed through massive community engagement and education, mass dog vaccination, mass dog sterilization and human-dog conflict mitigation. I sincerely hope that through this program we will demonstrate an effective solution to our abundant dog problem, and protect both human and animal health."
