Such an honor and a privilege to share space with the “Super Sherpa” Apa Sherpa ji as we hand over copies of JAPA workbook lovingly created by Apa foundation and The Jane Goodall Institute Nepal to be distributed among 400 students in the mountains. JAPA (Jane+Apa) is such an incredible initiative and we are ecstatic to have been part of it.

Yesterday, on special occasion of Jane Goodall's birthday, we at The Jane Goodall Institute Nepal are thrilled to share a heartwarming milestone in our Manumitra and Roots and Shoots project. With the support of Kathmandu Locals, we've successfully completed our initiative to feed and care for the street dogs (approx 250 in number) at Teku dumping site of Kathmandu.

There furry friends, who have relied on the scrap for survival, were treated to warm-cooked meals, thanks to the dedication of Kathmandu Locals. This initiative reflects our commitment to Jane's legacy of compassion and her profound love for animals, especially dogs, where her journey as a primatologist began.

As a token of our admiration and support for Kathmandu Locals remarkable efforts, we're happy to announce our contribution of small support from our side towards their ongoing mission. Their tireless dedication for over 1000 days, extending from the challenging days of lockdown to the present, demonstrates the power of community-driven compassion.

Together, we strive to create a world where every creature, big or small, is valued and cared for. On the special day, we celebrated goodall's extraordinary impact on conservation and animal welfare.

Let's promise to follow her steps, nurturing a future of harmony between humans and nature.

Once again, happy birthday DR.JANE GOODALL 🎈

Celebrating Jane at 90: Bigbadbollywood Charity Event Recap

On March 30th, on EDN Sanepa, we grooved and danced our hearts out at our Bollywood charity event, i.e. "Dance for Dogs", all for a pawsome cause- our furry friends! 🐕 🐕

With themes ranging from '70's to the nostalgic 80's and 90's, our dance party was a blast! But the real stars of the show were our generous attendees who danced for dogs by purchasing tickets.

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our amazing sponsors, organizers, and supporters who made this event possible!

Last but not the least, a big thank you to everyone who joined us and made this charity event an unforgettable success! Your presence and support mean the world to us and to the street dogs of Nepal we strive to protect and care for.

As we are celebrating the remarkable Dr.Jane Goodall's upcoming 90th birthday on April 3rd, this event was not only a charity event but also a heartfelt tribute to her lifelong dedication to animal welfare, particularly her love for dogs.

Let's continue spreading love and compassion for all creatures just as Dr.Jane has inspired us to do. Together, we can make a difference!

Roots and Shoots Nepal has taken an initiative to improve the educational status of children in Mahottari district.

With the establishment of libraries in two schools and one learning center in Aurahi and Bardibas, our organization aims to provide better access to educational resources for the indigenous community.

This effort will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the lives of children in the area.

Rato Bangla School generously donated multitude of books and stationery items on March 5, 2024 to support our library establishment project. We are grateful for their contribution and appreciate their dedication to education and literacy.

This contribution will enable us to further our efforts to enhance children’s education and awareness. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the kind donor for their support.

We are excited to share the wonderful moments from our recent certificate distribution ceremony held on 22nd March 2024 at kar.ma cafe in Jhamsikhel!

The Travelling Theatre program, a collaborative effort between The Jane Goodall Institute Nepal (JGIN), Children Youth First (CYF): Life Vision Academy, and Bird Conservation Nepal (BCN), aimed to raise awareness about vulture conservation through captivating theatrical performances.

Led by Haushala Thapa, the students of CYF:Life Vision Academy mesmerized audiences with their talent and dedication, spreading the message of vulture conservation far and wide.

During the ceremony, certificates of appreciation were distributed to the outstanding students, Ms. Haushala Thapa, and the whole CYF team who stood there to make the project successful. Additionally, an exhibition featuring a book titled "Misunderstood Birds: The Vulture" showcased stories written by the students of CYF, further highlighting the importance of the vulture conservation.

A big thank you to everyone involved for making the Travelling Theatre program a huge success! Together, we are making a difference in vulnerable conservation.

Today, our Grade 5 students (Roots and Shoots club members) from Swostishree Gurukul came together to celebrate these delightful creatures that bring so much joy to our world.

Through their heartfelt words and enthusiasm, they reminded us of the importance of preserving and cherishing our feathered friends.

Happy Wold Spay Day!!!!

Transforming Lives, One Spay at a Time!

On the occasion of World Spaying Day, we pledge towards ensuring well-being and managing the population of homeless animals. World Spay Day celebrates the importance of animal birth control and encourages guardians of cats and dogs to have their pets spayed and neutered.

World Spay Day has evolved into a global campaign through support of organizations like the Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International since its inception in 1995 through the efforts of Doris Day and the Doris Day Animal League (DDAL). It stands as a beacon of hope, advocating for the health and dignity of animals worldwide.

The Jane Goodall Institute Nepal (JGI) with the support of Humane Society International (HSI) and Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) launched the “One Health Dog Management Program” ( Manumitra) on 20th April 2016 to manage the urban dog population, address animal health and environmental concerns, and improve public health.

Manumitra achieved sterilization and vaccination of at least 80 percent of street dogs in KMC. To complement the sterilization and vaccination activity, a comprehensive educational awareness program was proposed to be run on the community level.

“Dogs do speak, but only to those who know how to listen.”
-Orhan Pamuk
Let’s make a effort today to try to listen to the unspoken words of these lovely creatures.

The Government of Nepal through section 290 of Muluki Criminal Code 2074 has prohibited cruel behavior towards animals. The same section allows minimum use of force to train animals for their work. However, in lack of accurate definition of the "minimum use of force” innocent animals will continue to be maltreated. This provision will continue to enforce the idea of superiority of human beings over other species that reside in this earth?
For more than a decade zoos all over the world have been assumed as a medium of conservation and scientific study but in the year 2024 where we envision equitable and sustainable future should we not revisit the concept of animal captivity? Even the Article 9 of The Convention of Biological Diversity promotes ex-situ conservation in complementary to the in-situ conservation, meaning ex-situ conservation should only be taken as the other alternative.
The desire of independence; to venture on our own is one of the most common instinctual human characteristic, however, why is that when it comes to free movement of one of the largest mammals on land, Elephant, we feel entitled to have our assertions?
This does not prompt a balanced eco-system but implements the idea of an ego-system. Captivity of Elephants drives them away from their natural habitat and places them in an environment considered “safe” for their growth. Nonetheless, elephants suffer in these environments, considering it does not provide them with adequately stimulating, natural environment for their cognitive capacities.
A human’s right to live is not only focused on survival. Its main component is assurance of basic human needs to thrive in various social environments without an obstacle of mental and physical health. Its aim is to develop ‘human personality’, not just create eating, breathing and drinking combination of flesh and bones. So how it is justifiable when we obstruct the social and psychological growth of a sentient being like Elephant?
